Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia opettajien ja opettajaopiskelijoiden näkemyksiä kulttuurisesta moninaisuudesta. Näkemysten perustan selvittämiseksi tutkittiin tapoja, joilla osallistujat kuvaavat ilmiötä sekä kartoitettiin osallistujien käsitykseen vaikuttaneita kokemuksia. Tutkimus on lähestymistavaltaan fenomenografinen. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin sähköisellä kyselylomakkeella mahdollisimman suuren osallistujamäärän takaamiseksi. Lopullinen osallistujajoukko koostui 14 opettajasta ja 15 opiskelijasta. Aineisto analysoitiin sisällönanalyysin keinoin luokittelemalla vastausten sisällöt teemoittain. Maahanmuuttajien määrän lisääntyminen Suomessa 1990-luvulta lähtien ja samaan aikaan tapahtunut yhteiskunnallinen murros näkyvät koulun arjessa. Näiden asioiden myötä opettajan yhteiskunnallinen vastuu on lisääntynyt. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa opettajien monikulttuurisia valmiuksia ylläpitää erilaisten oppijoiden arvokkuutta. Opettajan selkiintynyt minäkuva, arvomaailma ja ammatillisuus mahdollistavat myönteisen suhtautumisen elämään ja työhön.
