Escala multidimensional aplicada aos estudos de apreciação musical

2009

The multidimensional scaling (MDS) originates from a set of techniques for analyzing proximity of data, which is obtained through the judgments of participants who concomitantly compare several stimuli in various dimensions. The analysis of proximity judgments produces an analysis in which points represent the relationship existent between stimuli in a Euclidean space. The configuration of stimuli in the space defined by these dimensions permits to make inferences about the underlying perceptual universe of the studied group. Literature reveals that MDS is enlarging the study of music and the measurement of its structural properties. La escala multidimensional (MDS) deriva de una familia de…

Development of a short questionnaire based on the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index in primary health care

2019

BackgroundProfessional nursing environments determine the quality of care and patient outcomes. Assessing the quality of environments is essential to improve and obtain better health outcomes. Simplifying and shortening the way to evaluate environments reliably is also important to help nurses better understand the strengths and weaknesses of their environments. In that sense, identifying essential elements of nursing environments would allow the construction of short assessment tools to improve such environments.ObjectiveTo construct a short tool to assess primary health care (PHC) nursing environments based on the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) questionnaire.Metho…

On the convergent validity of two Parental Rearing Behaviour Scales: EIIBU and PBI

1999

The EMBU and PBI are two of the most used Parental Rearing Behaviour questionnaires. The literature assumes a high correlation between homonymous and assimilable factors (PBI Care and EMBU Affectional Warmth, PBI Control and EMBU Overprotection). Using a sample of 796 subjects the authors carried out the joint application of both scales in order to determine their concurrent validity. The correlation obtained between the scales barely reaches significance on average levels of correlation. The same can be deduced for the applied Multidimensional Scaling. In conclusion, the most extreme precaution is recommended when considering the homonymous scales of both questionnaires, and their joint us…

Analyzing assessors and products in sorting tasks: DISTATIS, theory and applications

2007

Abstract In this paper we present a new method called distatis that can be applied to the analysis of sorting data. D istatis is a generalization of classical multidimensional scaling which allows one to analyze 3-ways distance tables. When used for analyzing sorting tasks, distatis takes into account individual sorting data. Specifically, when distatis is used to analyze the results of an experiment in which several assessors sort a set of products, we obtain two types of maps: One for the assessors and one for the products. In these maps, the proximity between two points reflects their similarity, and therefore these maps can be read using the same rules as standard metric multidimensiona…

DISTATIS: The Analysis of Multiple Distance Matrices

2006

In this paper we present a generalization of classical multidimensional scaling called DISTATIS which is a new method that can be used to compare algorithms when their outputs consist of distance matrices computed on the same set of objects. The method first evaluates the similarity between algorithms using a coefficient called the RV coefficient. From this analysis, a compromise matrix is computed which represents the best aggregate of the original matrices. In order to evaluate the differences between algorithms, the original distance matrices are then projected onto the compromise. We illustrate this method with a "toy example" in which four different "algorithms" (two computer programs …

Main Trends in Regional Innovation Systems: An Author Co-citation Analysis

2010

Regional Innovation Systems are increasingly attracting attention on behalf of accademics, practitioners and policy makers. This has produced a wide array of studies in the field, both regards the specific themes treated and the perspectives adopted. Though a number of sujective reviews of the field have been proposed, these tend to present the field according to the analysts' subjective biases and tends to meld what the field is with what the field should be. In order to overcome the limitations present in the subjective reviews proposed untill today, in this study we conduct an objective review of the main contributions to the Regional Innovation Systems fiels of studies.

A Novel Multidimensional Scaling Technique for Mapping Word-Of-Mouth Discussions

2009

The techniques which utilize Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) as a fundamental statistical tool have been well developed since the late 1970’s. In this paper we show how anMDS scheme can be enhanced by incorporating into it a Stochastic Point Location (SPL) strategy (one which optimizes the former’s gradient descent learning phase) and a new Stress function. The enhanced method, referred to as MDS SPL, has been used in conjunction with a combination of the TF-IDF and Cosine Similarities on a very noisy Word-Of-Mouth (WoM) discussion set consisting of postings concerning mobile phones, yielding extremely satisfying results.

Multidimensional Scaling in Cluster Analysis: examples in Science and Mathematics Education

2021

Several researches in STEM education research highlight the advantages of an inte- grated approach to these disciplines that relates knowledge and know-how, design and implementation, theoretical and practical problems [5, 4, 6]. In some researches, the effectiveness of these approaches on students conceptual understanding and motivation and has been studied through the use of quantitative analysis tools such as cluster analysis (CLA) [1, 7]. Through CLA it is possible to characterize students analyzing the strategies they deploy to tackle, for example, questionnaires built so as to investigate the lines of reasoning implemented by them when they are proposed with problematic situations. STATIS and DISTATIS: optimum multitable principal component analysis and three way metric multidimensional scaling

2012

STATIS is an extension of principal component analysis PCA tailored to handle multiple data tables that measure sets of variables collected on the same observations, or, alternatively, as in a variant called dual-STATIS, multiple data tables where the same variables are measured on different sets of observations. STATIS proceeds in two steps: First it analyzes the between data table similarity structure and derives from this analysis an optimal set of weights that are used to compute a linear combination of the data tables called the compromise that best represents the information common to the different data tables; Second, the PCA of this compromise gives an optimal map of the observation…

Pianificazione strategica tra sviluppo locale e policentrismo: alcune evidenze empiriche sul caso siciliano

2009

Strategic planning, local development and policentrism: empirical evidence for Sicily The aim of this paper is the analysis of metropolitan strategic planning in Sicily. Urban areas are becoming important units for territorial cohesion policy and strategic planning represents more and more an important policy instrument. Evidence of a policentric pattern is tested across 30 strategic plans carried out by Sicilian cities in order to derive useful insights for policy implications. Methods and Results This study uses multidimensional scaling and rank-size regressions across Sicilian Functional Urban Areas (FUA) as well as descriptive information drawn from strategic plans in order to identify …
