Finite elements for nonlinear free vibrations analysis of smart laminates subjected to in-plane loadings

2015

Advanced composites, able to provide multi-functional capabilities besides the traditional structural functions, has been gaining attention in many technological fields. This inherent coupling of different physical fields can be exploited in transducer applications, structural health monitoring, vibration control, energy harvesting and other applications. Magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) composite materials are attracting increasing consideration as they couple mechanical, electrical and magnetic fields and this makes them particularly suitable for smart applications. Generally, single-phase materials exhibit either piezoelectric or piezomagnetic behavior and no direct magneto-electric couplin…

MITC FINITE ELEMENTS FOR MAGNETO-ELECTRO-ELASTIC PLATES BASED ON EQUIVALENT SINGLE-LAYER THEORY

2013

Finite elements for magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates are formulated. They are based on an equivalent single-layer model, which assumes the first order shear deformation theory and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields. To infer the plate model, the electro-magnetic state is firstly determined and condensed to the the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements. In turn, this result is used into the layers constitutive law to obtain the equivalent single-layer laminate constitutive relationship that expresses the plate mechanical stress resultants in terms of the generalized displacements taking the magneto-electro-elastic couplings into ac…

Non-destructive Approach to Multilayer Objects: XRF Analysis of Gilt and Enamelled Metals of the Medieval Cross of Rosciolo

2013

Abstract The penetration of X-rays is usually a limitation to the application of XRF analysis to multilayered materials, however it is possible, by software tools based on the fundamental parameters method, to overcome this problem and estimate thickness and composition of each layer. The cross of Rosciolo is a significant example of multilayer object: it is made of a wood core with attached gilt silver sheets and decorated with enamels. Measurements were carried out in situ and the PyMCA software was employed. The values of gilding thickness, Au/Hg ratios and Cu content in the silver sheets, and enamel's composition are discussed.

X-ray fluorescence investigation of gilded and enamelled silver: The case study of four medieval processional crosses from central Italy

2013

Abstract The presence of multilayered structures is common in such cultural artefacts as paintings, corroded metals, objects that underwent a whatever form of surface qualification. One of the most usual and complete ways to investigate such structures is observing a cross section, which requires sampling. There are however situations where at least part of the stratigraphic information can be derived non-destructively: the literature shows that X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has frequently been used, in recent years, for this purpose, with special regard to paintings and gilded metals. Aim of this paper is to further explore the suitability of XRF-based techniques to characterise multilayered st…

Two multilayered plate models with transverse shear warping functions issued from three dimensional elasticity equations

2014

Abstract A multilayered plate theory which uses transverse shear warping functions is presented. Two methods to obtain the transverse shear warping functions from three-dimensional elasticity equations are proposed. The warping functions are issued from the variations of transverse shear stresses computed at specific points of a simply supported plate. The first method considers an exact 3D solution of the problem. The second method uses the solution provided by the model itself: the transverse shear stresses are computed integrating equilibrium equations. Hence, an iterative process is applied, the model is updated with the new warping functions, and so on. Once the sets of warping functio…

A finite element formulation for large deflection of multilayered magneto-electro-elastic plates

2014

An original finite element formulation for the analysis of large deflections in magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates is presented. The formulation is based on an equivalent single-layer model in which first order shear deformation theory with von Karman strains and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields are assumed. To obtain the plate model, the electro-magnetic state is firstly determined and condensed to the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements. In turn, this result is used to obtain laminate effective stiffness coefficients that allow to express the plate mechanical stress resultants in terms of the generalized displacements and a…

A discontinuous Galerkin formulation for nonlinear analysis of multilayered shells refined theories

2023

A novel pure penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of multilayered composite plates and shells, modelled via high-order refined theories. The approach allows to build different two-dimensional equivalent single layer structural models, which are obtained by expressing the covariant components of the displacement field through-the-thickness via Taylor’s polynomial expansion of different order. The problem governing equations are deduced starting from the geometrically nonlinear principle of virtual displacements in a total Lagrangian formulation. They are addressed with a pure penalty discontinuous Galerkin method using Legendre polynomial…

A comparison between models for the study of static and dynamic behavior of heterogeneous multilayer composite plates

2013

In composite plate structures, it is common to combine different materials with very different Young's moduli and densities. Damping treatments can also be added to prevent high levels of vibration. For discretized problems, the static and dynamic behavior of such heterogeneous structures can be carried out with the 3D elasticity theory but this often leads to very large systems. Therefore, plate theories and particularly equivalent single layer models are often preferred. Classical plate theories have then been adapted to these particular structures using shear correction factors. Higher order shear deformation theories, and more recently transverse shear warping functions, have been propo…

Transverse shear warping functions for anisotropic multilayered plates

2012

In this work, transverse shear warping functions for an equivalent single layer plate model are formulated from a variational approach. The part of the strain energy which involves the shear phenomenon is expressed in function of the warping functions and their derivatives. The variational calculus leads to a differential system of equations which warping functions must verify. Solving this system requires the choice of values for the (global) shear strains and their derivatives. A particular choice, which is justified for cross-ply laminates, leads to excellent results. For single layer isotropic and orthotropic plates, an analytical expression of the warping functions is given. They invol…
