Hibridisme i autoreferència en el fantàstic d'Espiral, de Manuel Baixauli

2018

The aim of this paper is to define and to analyse the fantastic universe of short stories by Manuel Baixauli published in the volume Espiral (2010), an original and highly significant example of modern fantastic literature that has abolished the real and imaginary borders, that is to say a significant example of fantastic literature conceived as a language phenomenon. The conception of reality integrates and naturalises the supernatural and the irrational in a vision that joins multiple dimensions and perspectives of reality. The self-referential component is also of essential importance in this fantastic, which assimilates and exhibits themes and motifs of inherited traditions in a fully c…

Part-time special education predicts students' reading self-concept development

2018

Abstract The academic self-concept changes from childhood to early adulthood in relation to experiences of capability in different school tasks and comparison with peers. Students in special education have a lower academic self-concept than their peers do, but it is unclear how part-time special education affects self-concept development. In Finnish schools, part-time special education is learning support that is usually provided for 1–2 h/week in small groups. The main aim of this study was exploring the effects of participation in part-time special education and gender on the level and change in three academic self-concept domains (General School, Mathematics and Reading) between the ages…

Is the ‘euro effect’ on trade so small after all? New evidence using gravity equations with panel cointegration techniques

2014

In this paper we present new evidence on the aggregate effect of the euro on trade using data for 26 OECD countries for the period 1967–2008. We strive to fill the gaps present in the previous literature through a second-generation panel cointegration tests and estimators that account for both cross-section dependence in the data and discontinuities in the deterministic and the cointegrating vector in the time dimension. This approach allows us to put the adoption of the euro by EMU members in historical perspective. We argue that the creation of the EMU is best interpreted as a progression of policy changes. Once we control for all of them the euro effect decreases considerably but is stil…

Multiple time step integrators and momentum conservation

1997

Abstract By use of the standard Liouville operator formalism, we derive a new symplectic multiple time step integrator for Hamiltonian systems with disparate masses, which, in contrast to previous algorithms, conserves the total momentum exactly, and is only moderately slower. The new scheme is tested numerically by application to Molecular Dynamics simulations of a polymer melt whose monomers have different masses, and compared to earlier algorithms.

Vector Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Models to Assess Multiscale Complexity in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Time Series

2020

Cardiovascular variability is the result of the activity of several physiological control mechanisms, which involve different variables and operate across multiple time scales encompassing short term dynamics and long range correlations. This study presents a new approach to assess the multiscale complexity of multivariate time series, based on linear parametric models incorporating autoregressive coefficients and fractional integration. The approach extends to the multivariate case recent works introducing a linear parametric representation of multiscale entropy, and is exploited to assess the complexity of cardiovascular and respiratory time series in healthy subjects studied during postu…

Family-supportive organization perceptions, multiple dimensions of work–family conflict, and employee satisfaction : a test of model across five samp…

2008

Work-family conflict (WFC) is recognized as a major issue affecting both individual employees and their employers. Preliminary research shows that the more employees perceive their work environment as family-supportive, the less they experience WFC (Allen, 2001). Moreover, there are theoretical and empirical reasons to expect that by reducing WFC, a family-supportive work environment would enhance employees’ satisfaction with their job, family, and life in general. In addition, despite the impressive body of research that has been devoted to WFC, there have been few studies that have assessed WFC as a multidimensional construct, other than those that distinguish between directions of confli…

Corporate Governance Effects on Firm Performance: a Literature Review

2021

The objective of this paper is to analyze the results of recent empirical research concerning the impact of corporate governance on firm performance and reflect potential research design problems which lead to inconsistent results. By means of a literature review including all articles of academic journal data bases with a journal quality rating of at least a C-rating in the VHB Journal Rating or above ‘3’ in the ABS Academic Journal Rating, respectively, the recent empirical research articles are analyzed regarding their main results. Two main groups of studies are identified: studies on company level to determine the impact of single corporate governance variables such as board size, chai…

El desarrollo humano sostenible: un compromiso educativo

2017

Sustainable Human Development (hereafter SHD) is taking shape as a proposal for progress in the face of a crisis in civilization so complex and far-reaching that it is considered quite difficult to solve. The aim of this article is to offer a reasoned justification of the evolution of the concept of development and of the need for an educational commitment to be able to make progress towards it. Although it is still polemical and the object of criticism, SHD has become consolidated as a strongly ethical proposal to lead the change in the course of development, transversally affecting its multiple dimensions and advocating interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation and dialogue. The art…

Process and technology challenges in swift-starting virtual teams

2007

Originally published in the journal Information & Management : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03787206 Virtual teams often face tight schedules and a need to start quickly and perform instantly. The goal of our study was to enhance understanding of the challenges faced by such teams. We used time–interaction–performance theory as the framework for following the processes and functions within virtual teams working on a systems development task. Our study provided a detailed examination of the group process, applied to virtual teams working under time pressure. The challenges faced by virtual teams in such settings showed that teams must work to enhance their effectiveness in mu…

Neuropsychological underpinnings of the dynamics of bipolar disorder

2015

Although we have gained enormous insights into neurobiological and psychological underpinnings of bipolar disorder (BD) symptoms, our knowledge concerning pathogenic mechanisms initiating recurrent affective episodes is still fragmentary. Previous research has highlighted the role of significant life events and social rhythm in recurrent episodes of mania and depression. However, most studies share the drawback of retrospective self-report data, which are prone to recall biases and limited introspective abilities. Therefore, more objective data, such as neuropsychological and neurobiological measures are needed to further unravel the pathogenic mechanisms of the dynamics of bipolar disorder…
