One-dimensional wavelength multiplexed microscope without objective lens

2009

A new approach aimed to achieve microscopic imaging without objective lenses and based on wavelength multiplexing of the spatial object information is presented. The proposed method is used to develop, construct and experimentally validate a new type of optical microscope having no objective lens and no numerical reconstruction algorithms to allow imaging process. In order to extract the collected spatial information we use a spectrometer as part of our microscope system. Preliminary results are presented while considering two different types of one-dimensional (1-D) objects.

Wavelength-multiplexing system for single-mode image transmission

1997

The expanding use of optical communication by means of optical fibers and the situation of drastically increasing amounts of data to be transmitted urge the exploration of novel systems permitting the transmission of large amounts of spatial information by fiber with smaller spatial resolution. An optical encoding and decoding system is suggested for transmitting one- or two-dimensional images by means of a single-mode fiber. The superresolving system is based on wavelength multiplexing of the input spatial information, which is achieved with diffractive optical elements. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the capabilities of the suggested method for the one- and two-dimensional c…

Versatile metal-wire waveguides for broadband terahertz signal processing and multiplexing.

2022

AbstractWaveguides play a pivotal role in the full deployment of terahertz communication systems. Besides signal transporting, innovative terahertz waveguides are required to provide versatile signal-processing functionalities. Despite fundamental components, such as Bragg gratings, have been recently realized, they typically rely on complex hybridization, in turn making it extremely challenging to go beyond the most elementary functions. Here, we propose a universal approach, in which multiscale-structured Bragg gratings can be directly etched on metal-wires. Such an approach, in combination with diverse waveguide designs, allows for the realization of a unique platform with remarkable str…

Multiplex PCR-Based Next-Generation Sequencing Approach Has Detected a Common Large Deletion in STS Gene in a Patient with X-Linked Ichthyosis

2016

Several nuclear genes have been found to be linked to ichthyosis, and Next Generation Sequencing approach on panels of targeted genes has turned out to be particularly useful in analyzing diseases characterized by significant genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity. We developed a panel of 26 genes to be screened with the Ion Personal Genome Machine (PGM) for causative mutations relating to ichthyosis. Sequencing runs were obtained from a patient with ichthyosis using the Ion Torrent PGM and then processed with Ion Torrent Suite, Variant Caller, Coverage Analysis and wANNOVER tools. No causative mutations were found using Variant Caller and wANNOVER softwares, whereas the “Coverage Analysis” t…

Downlink channel access performance of NR-U: Impact of numerology and mini-slots on coexistence with Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz band

2020

Coexistence between cellular systems and Wi-Fi gained the attention of the research community when LTE License Assisted Access (LAA) entered the unlicensed band. The recent introduction of NR-U as part of 5G introduces new coexistence opportunities because it implements scalable numerology (flexible subcarrier spacing and OFDM symbol lengths), and non-slot based scheduling (mini-slots), which considerably impact channel access. This paper analyzes the impact of NR-U settings on its coexistence with Wi-Fi networks and compares it with LAA operation using simulations and experiments. First, we propose a downlink channel access simulation model, which addresses the problem of the dependency an…

Development of the Optical Multiplexer Board Prototype for Data Acquisition in the TileCal System

2006

This paper describes the development of the optical multiplexer board (OMB), also known as PreROD board, for the TileCal readout system in the ATLAS experiment. The aim of this board is to overcome the problems that may arise in the integrity of data due to radiation effects. The solution adopted has been to add redundancy to data transmission and so two optical fibers with the same data come out from the detector front end boards. The OMB has to decide in real time which fiber, eventually, carries data with no errors switching it to the output link connected to the read out driver (ROD) motherboard where data processing takes place. Besides, the board may be also used as a data injector fo…

Optical Link Card Design for the Phase II Upgrade of TileCal Experiment

2011

This paper presents the design of an optical link card developed in the frame of the R&D activities for the phase 2 upgrade of the TileCal experiment. This board, that is part of the evaluation of different technologies for the final choice in the next years, is designed as a mezzanine that can work independently or be plugged in the optical multiplexer board of the TileCal backend electronics. It includes two SNAP 12 optical connectors able to transmit and receive up to 75 Gb/s and one SFP optical connector for lower speeds and compatibility with existing hardware as the read out driver. All processing is done in a Stratix II GX field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Details are given on th…

Performance of the front-end electronics of the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2010

ANTARES is a high-energy neutrino telescope installed in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2475 m. It consists of a three-dimensional array of optical modules, each containing a large photomultiplier tube. A total of 2700 front-end ASICs named Analogue Ring Samplers (ARS) process the phototube signals, measure their arrival time, amplitude and shape as well as perform monitoring and calibration tasks. The ARS chip processes the analogue signals from the optical modules and converts information into digital data. All the information is transmitted to shore through further multiplexing electronics and an optical link. This paper describes the performance of the ARS chip; results from the fu…

MUSIC-LS Modal Channel Estimation for an OFDM-OQAM System

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) signaling over frequency selective multipath channels shows inter-symbol interference (ISI) and Inter-Channel Interference (ICI) that degrade its performance. Channel equalization and channel estimation are needed to combat these intrinsic interferences. In this paper a novel modal channel estimator based on the MUltiple signal classification (MUSIC) and least squares (LS) algorithms for a wideband passband OFDM-OQAM signaling over static multipath channels is presented. The effects of the frequency selective channel on the received signal are described considering a wideband OFDM-OQAM sys…
