Optimization of wavelength division multiplexing in N×160Gbit/s terrestrial transmission systems

2005

Abstract We analyze, from an engineering viewpoint, the prospects of an exploitable upgrade of terrestrial fiber systems based on standard monomode fiber and dispersion compensating units, for future N  × 160 Gbit/s transmission systems. We show that dispersion swing, average dispersion and input pulse power are the key parameters that govern the system performances. We show that whenever the dispersion swing is arranged in a symmetrical setup and the compensation ratio is optimized accordingly, one may obtain a significant improvement of the transmission performances.

Unambiguous phase retrieval in fiber-based interferometers

2020

A scheme for fiber interferometers, exploiting frequency-multiplexing in orthogonal fiber polarization modes, enables unambiguous phase retrieval. This allows for arbitrary phase tuning, providing a precise tool for time-bin qubit manipulation.

Legri Operations. Detectors and Detector Stability

2001

Two years after launch (04.21.97), LEGRI is operating on Minisat-01 in a LEO orbit. The LEGRI detector plane is formed by two type of gamma-ray solid state detectors: HgI2 and CdZnTe. Detectors are embedded in a box containing the FEE and DFE electronics. This box provides an effective detector passive shielding. Detector plane is multiplexed by a Coded Aperture System located at 54 cm and a Ta Collimator with a FCFOV of 22° and 2° angular resolution. The aim of this paper is to summarize the detector behaviour in three different time scales: before launch, during the in-orbit check-out period (IOC), and after two years of routine operation in space. Main results can be summarized as follow…

Stroboscopic Space Tag for Optical Time-Resolved Measurements with a Charge Coupled Device Detector

2018

Time-resolved measurements are extensively employed in the study of light–matter interaction at the nanoscale such as the exciton dynamics in semiconductors or the ultrafast intraband transitions in metals. Importantly, single-photon correlation, quantum state tomography, and other techniques devoted to the characterization of quantum optics systems rely on time-resolved experiments, whose resolution which is bound to the time response of the detector and related electronics. For this reason, multiplexing or beam deflection techniques have been recently proposed to overcome the detector resolution and thus measure the final photon distribution characteristics. Taking advantage of both strat…

Lossless equalization of frequency combs

2008

Frequency combs obtained by sinusoidal phase modulation of narrow-band continuous-wave lasers are widely used in the field of optical communications. However, the resulting spectral envelope of the comb is not at. In this Letter, we propose a general and eficient approach to achieve at frequency combs with tunable bandwidth. The idea is based on a two-step process. First, eficient generation of a train with temporal at-top-pulse profile is required. Second, we use large parabolic phase modulation in every train period in order to map the temporal intensity shape into the spectral domain. In this way, the resulting spectral envelope is at and the size is tunable with the chirping rate. Two d…

Input pulse optimization in wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton transmissions

1997

Abstract Amplitudes of input pulses in different channels of wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton transmissions should be adjusted according to their wavelength shift. The optimal distribution of input amplitudes maintains the initial time width and minimizes the radiations. Numerical simulations indicate that using this simple method, WDM transmission capacities of 80 Gbit/s over transoceanic distances may be possible in dispersion-managed fiber links without introducing any in-line soliton controls.

Kerr frequency comb generation in the normal dispersion regime of dispersion oscillating telecom fiber

2013

The generation of optical frequency combs has a variety of applications from optical metrology to spectroscopy and wavelength division multiplexing. Nonlinear methods to generate frequency combs are based on multiple four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear waveguides [1]. The mechanism for the generation of a wideband comb from a CW pump is Kerr-induced phase-matching of the FWM interaction or modulation instability (MI), which requires operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. Such restriction can be circumvented with a cavity geometry, where MI [2] and comb generation [3] may also be observed in the normal dispersion region. Alternatively, one may obtain MI and unequally spaced Ker…

Resolution and field of view improvement in digital holography using a VCSEL source array

2011

We describe a new implementation capable to produce superresolution (SR) and object field of view (FOV) improvement in digital lensless Fourier holography. The method provides synthetic aperture (SA) generation using angular multiplexing incoming from a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) source array. SR imaging in a single exposure is obtained after proper digital processing of a multiplexed hologram coming from the incoherent addition of multiple sub-holograms, each one corresponding with a different source of the VCSEL array. FOV improvement in addition with SR imaging is achieved by recording a set of individual holograms obtained by sequential activation of the VCSEL source…
