A directional spectral mixture analysis method: application to multiangular airborne measurements

2006

This study aims at developing an operational approach-namely, directional spectral mixture analysis (DISMA)-for retrieving vegetation parameters like fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and leaf area index (LAI) from multispectral and multiangular data. The approach attempts to highlight the consistency of one-dimensional models and linear mixture approaches. DISMA combines spectral signatures of soil and vegetation components with an analytical approximation of the radiative transfer equation, giving rise to a fast invertible bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model of discontinuous canopies. Both the forward model and its inversion using a simple technique based on looku…

Multispectral colour analysis for quantitative evaluation of pseudoisochromatic color deficiency tests

2010

Multispectral color analysis was used for spectral scanning of Ishihara and Rabkin color deficiency test book images. It was done using tunable liquid-crystal LC filters built in the Nuance II analyzer. Multispectral analysis keeps both, information on spatial content of tests and on spectral content. Images were taken in the range of 420-720nm with a 10nm step. We calculated retina neural activity charts taking into account cone sensitivity functions, and processed charts in order to find the visibility of latent symbols in color deficiency plates using cross-correlation technique. In such way the quantitative measure is found for each of diagnostics plate for three different color deficie…

Retrieval of oceanic chlorophyll concentration with relevance vector machines

2006

Abstract In this communication, we evaluate the performance of the relevance vector machine (RVM) for the estimation of biophysical parameters from remote sensing data. For illustration purposes, we focus on the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentrations from remote sensing reflectance just above the ocean surface. A variety of bio-optical algorithms have been developed to relate measurements of ocean radiance to in situ concentrations of phytoplankton pigments, and ultimately most of these algorithms demonstrate the potential of quantifying chlorophyll-a concentrations accurately from multispectral satellite ocean color data. Both satellite-derived data and in situ measurements are subject…

Minimum configuration of thermal infrared bands for land surface temperature and emissivity estimation in the context of potential future missions

2014

Abstract A number of applications rely on the availability of high resolution TIR data, both in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, as well as in terms of spectral configuration. A consensus exists among the thermal community regarding the lack of such a kind of data, since only one operational sensor is currently providing multispectral TIR data at high spatial resolution (the case of ASTER, at 90 m spatial resolution and a 16-day revisit time). In this paper we propose a minimum multispectral configuration to allow the retrieval of both land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity ( e ) from thermal infra-red (TIR) data. For this purpose, we propose a minimum configuration based on…

Towards to deep neural network application with limited training data: synthesis of melanoma's diffuse reflectance spectral images

2019

The goal of our study is to train artificial neural networks (ANN) using multispectral images of melanoma. Since the number of multispectral images of melanomas is limited, we offer to synthesize them from multispectral images of benign skin lesions. We used the previously created melanoma diagnostic criterion p'. This criterion is calculated from multispectral images of skin lesions captured under 526nm, 663nm, and 964nm LED illumination. We synthesize these three images from multispectral images of nevus so that the p' map matches the melanoma criteria (the values in the lesion area is >1, respectively). Demonstrated results show that by transforming multispectral images of benign nevus i…

Conversion of nadir, narrowband reflectance in red and near-infrared channels to hemispherical surface albedo

1997

Abstract Measured nadir-viewed narrow-band reflectanees in red and near infrared channels simulating AVHRR Channels 1 and 2 are compared with measured integrated solar spectrum hemispherical albedos. Reflectanees and albedos were measured from an aircraft over four widely different vegetation surfaces in southeastern Tasmania (Australia). A linear function is used to simultaneously correct for narrow band to broad band conversion errors and to convert nadir viewed reflectances to hemispherical albedos. While the application of the conversion equation presented is limited to the vegetation types of the study, the equation is independent of vegetation type. Results indicate that the reflectan…

Assessment of vine development according to available water resources by using remote sensing in La Mancha, Spain

1999

Abstract The relevance of growing vines under semiarid conditions is universally accepted because of its impacts on social, economic and environmental aspects. Improving the knowledge of the soil–plant–atmosphere system related to the expression of vine growth allows the study of vine cover in wide areas. Several aspects of vine growing under semiarid conditions, related to weather, soil, and plant cover are analysed in this paper. Once the ground truth is achieved, multitemporal studies by remote sensing are especially useful for vine growth monitoring. The purpose of this work is focussed on determining changes of vine cover development according to available water resources in relation t…

Comparison of Thermal Infrared Emissivities Retrieved With the Two-Lid Box and the TES Methods With Laboratory Spectra

2009

Knowledge of surface emissivity in the thermal infrared (TIR) region is critical for determining the land surface temperature (LST) from remote-sensing measurements. If emissivity is not well determined, it can cause a significant systematic error in obtaining the LST. The main aim of this paper is to compare different methods for measuring accurate land surface emissivity in the field, namely, the box method and the temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm. Field emissivities were compared with soil spectra from laboratory measurements. Emissivities were measured for the bands of a multispectral radiometer CE312-2 with effective wavelengths at 8.4, 8.7, 9.1, 10.6, and 11.3 mum…

Comparison of Bathymetric estimation using different satellite images in coastal sea waters

2009

Bathymetric estimation can be obtained from multispectral satellite images for shallow waters. The method is based on the rotation of a pair of spectral bands. One of the resulting images is depth-dependent. Therefore several pixels corresponding to different depths are required to numerically evaluate the linear relation between the pixel values and the real depth for a training area. The aim of this study is to compare, for one bathymetric estimation method and one mesotrophic site, the results of depth estimation with a large panel of satellite and aerial images: CASI, QUICKBIRD, CHRIS PROBA, ETM, HYPERION and MeRIS. For each image the pair of spectral bands chosen to compute the bathyme…
