Comparison of Thermal Infrared Emissivities Retrieved With the Two-Lid Box and the TES Methods With Laboratory Spectra

2009

Knowledge of surface emissivity in the thermal infrared (TIR) region is critical for determining the land surface temperature (LST) from remote-sensing measurements. If emissivity is not well determined, it can cause a significant systematic error in obtaining the LST. The main aim of this paper is to compare different methods for measuring accurate land surface emissivity in the field, namely, the box method and the temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm. Field emissivities were compared with soil spectra from laboratory measurements. Emissivities were measured for the bands of a multispectral radiometer CE312-2 with effective wavelengths at 8.4, 8.7, 9.1, 10.6, and 11.3 mum…

Analysis of acousto-optic tunable filter performance for imaging applications

2010

Acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs) can be used as spec- tral filters in multispectral imaging applications. Acousto-optic crystals diffract a single wavelength from a broadband light beam, depending on the applied radio frequency signal. However, experimental measurements show that the actual performance is far from the expected behavior. We present an experimental characterization of several commercial off-the- shelf AOTFs for the implementation of multispectral imaging instruments. The diffraction performance of three bare crystals is compared, while a fourth AOTF crystal is mounted on the optical path of a multispectral im- ager to evaluate its performance. The experiments show that t…

Multispectral filter arrays: Recent advances and practical implementation

2014

Thanks to some technical progress in interferencefilter design based on different technologies, we can finally successfully implement the concept of multispectral filter array-based sensors. This article provides the relevant state-of-the-art for multispectral imaging systems and presents the characteristics of the elements of our multispectral sensor as a case study. The spectral characteristics are based on two different spatial arrangements that distribute eight different bandpass filters in the visible and near-infrared area of the spectrum. We demonstrate that the system is viable and evaluate its performance through sensor spectral simulation. Multispectral filter arrays: Recent advan…

Assessment of workflow feature selection on forest LAI prediction with sentinel-2A MSI, landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI

2020

The European Space Agency (ESA)’s Sentinel-2A (S2A) mission is providing time series that allow the characterisation of dynamic vegetation, especially when combined with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/United States Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat 7 (L7) and Landsat 8 (L8) missions. Hybrid retrieval workflows combining non-parametric Machine Learning Regression Algorithms (MLRAs) and vegetation Radiative Transfer Models (RTMs) were proposed as fast and accurate methods to infer biophysical parameters such as Leaf Area Index (LAI) from these data streams. However, the exact design of optimal retrieval workflows is rarely discussed. In this study, the impact of…

Semi-automatic detection of skin malformations by analysis of spectral images

2013

The multi-spectral imaging technique to reveal skin malformations has been described in this work. Four spectral images taken at polarized monochromatic LED illumination (450nm, 545nm, 660nm and 940 nm) and polarized white LED light imaged by CMOS sensor via cross-oriented polarizing filter were analyzed to calculate chromophore maps. The algorithm based on skin color analysis and user-defined threshold selection allows highlighting of skin areas with predefined chromophore concentration semi-automatically. Preliminary results of clinical tests are presented.

Dynamic best spectral bands selection for face recognition

2014

In this paper, face recognition in uncontrolled illumination conditions is investigated. A twofold contribution is proposed. First, three state-of-art algorithms, namely Multiblock Local Binary Pattern (MBLBP), Histogram of Gabor Phase Patterns (HGPP) and Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS) are evaluated upon the IRIS-M3 face database to study their robustness against a high illumination variation conditions. Second, we propose to use visible multispectral images, provided by the same face database, to enhance the performance of the three mentioned algorithms. To reduce the high data dimensionality introduced by the use of multispectral images, we have designed a system t…

Energy balance in single exposure multispectral sensors

2013

International audience; Recent simulations of multispectral sensors are based on a simple Gaussian model, which includes filters transmittance and substrate absorption. In this paper we want to make the distinction between these two layers. We discuss the balance of energy by channel in multispectral solid state sensors and propose an updated simple Gaussian model to simulate multispectral sensors. Results are based on simulation of typical sensor configurations.

Impact of Spectral Resolution on Quantifying Cyanobacteria in Lakes and Reservoirs: A Machine-Learning Assessment

2022

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms are an increasing threat to coastal and inland waters. These blooms can be detected using optical radiometers due to the presence of phycocyanin (PC) pigments. The spectral resolution of best-available multispectral sensors limits their ability to diagnostically detect PC in the presence of other photosynthetic pigments. To assess the role of spectral resolution in the determination of PC, a large (N = 905) database of colocated in situ radiometric spectra and PC are employed. We first examine the performance of selected widely used machine-learning (ML) models against that of benchmark algorithms for hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance ( $R_{{rs}})$…

Comparison of metrics to remove the influence of geometrical conditions on soil reflectance

2007

The objective of this work is to find the best metric to ignore the variations of soil reflectance induced by the solar-view angles geometry. Differences between spectra measured for the same soil under different observation and illumination configurations can leads to misclassifications. Using ninety two soils of different composition measured under twenty eight solar- view angles geometries, we tested 3 metrics : RMSE, SAM, R2 (the coefficient of determination) and we compared their performances. The best metric seems to be the coefficient of determination with 93 % of good classifications.

Actual evapotranspiration estimation by means of airborne and satellite remote sensing data

2006

ABSTRACT During the last the two decades, the scientific community developed detailed mathematical models for simulating land surface energy fluxes and crop evapotrans piration rates by means of a energy ba lance approach. These models can be applied in large areas and with a spatial distributed approach using surface brightness temperature and some ancillary data retrieved from satellite/airborne remote sensed imagery. In this paper a district scale application in combination with multispectral (LandaSat 7 TM data) and hyperspectral airborne MIVIS data has been carried out to test the potentialities of two different energy balance models to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes from a set of …
