Clinical outcome of HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B in relation to virological response to lamivudine.

2004

The effect of lamivudine treatment on the outcome of patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis is unclear. In a retrospective multicenter study, we have analyzed the virological events observed during lamivudine therapy in patients with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis and evaluated the correlation between virological response and clinical outcomes. Among 656 patients (mean age 49.1 years) included in the database, 54% had chronic hepatitis, 30% had Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) A cirrhosis, and 16% had CTP B/C cirrhosis. On therapy (median 22 months, range 1–66), a virological response was obtained in 616 patients (93.9%). The rate of maintained virological respons…

Juvenile migraine and allodynia: results of a retrospective study.

2015

Background There are only 2 small sample studies investigating allodynia in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of allodynia during cephalalgic attacks in a juvenile population with primary headaches and its association with other symptoms of migraine. Methods We reviewed all medical records of patients with primary headache consecutively seen during a 2-year period. Frequency of allodynia was evaluated, by means of a questionnaire, consisting of 6 questions (for example: Do you avoid touching your head when you have a migraine attack?). Results Two hundred thirty children suffering from primary headache were seen during the study period. Two hundre…

Environmental exposure to dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls reduce levels of gonadal hormones in newborns: Results from the Duisburg cohort study

2006

Abstract Background Endocrine dysfunction related to the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) and/or the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis (HPG) is being discussed as underlying developmental adversity of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This study was done to evaluate effects related to the HPG axis. Methods A birth-cohort study was initiated in the year 2000. Healthy mother–infant pairs were recruited in the industrialized city of Duisburg, Germany. Dioxins, dioxin-like PCBs and six indicator PCBs were measured in maternal blood during pregnancy and in maternal milk. Testosterone and estradiol levels were measured in m…

Is There an Indication for Intraoperative MRI in Subtotal Resection of Glioblastoma? A Multicenter Retrospective Comparative Analysis.

2017

Objective Surgery in patients with highly eloquent glioblastoma (GB) remains challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate influence of use of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) on extent of resection (EOR), clinical outcome, and survival in patients with preoperatively intended subtotal resection of GB. Methods Retrospective assessment was performed in 3 neurosurgical centers (2008–2013). All patients with primary GB, unilocular growth, and adjuvant radiochemotherapy in whom subtotal resection was intended were included. Imaging data were pseudonymized and volumetrically assessed by a central reviewer. Clinical outcome was evaluated based on complications, new permanent …

Concurrent validation of the OMNI-resistance exercise scale of perceived exertion with Thera-band resistance bands.

2012

The concurrent validity of the OMNI-Resistance Exercise Scale (OMNI-RES) of perceived exertion for use with elastic bands was studied during isotonic resistance exercises. Twenty healthy, physically active subjects completed both familiarization and testing sessions. The criterion variables were myoelectric activity, recorded by electromyography, and heart rate, recorded by a heart rate monitor. The subjects performed 2 separate sets of 15 repetitions in each of the 2 testing sessions and for each of the exercises applied (i.e., frontal and lateral raises). One set was carried out with the separation between the hands gripping the elastic band allowing that 15 repetition maximum to be perfo…

Postural Control Mechanisms in Healthy Adults in Sitting and Standing Positions

2015

This study explored differences in the center of pressure in healthy people in a sitting and standing position and with eyes open and closed. With this purpose, 32 healthy participants (16 men, 16 women; M age = 25.2 yr., SD = 10.0, range = 18–55) were measured with an extensiometric force plate. Using a two–way repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), the root mean square, velocity, range, and sway, in both visual conditions, had higher values in the standing task than in the sitting task. In the frequency domain, the low-frequency band had higher values during the standing task. For control mechanism variables, mean distance and time were greater when standing while …

Assessment of immunodeficiency scoring index performance in enterovirus/rhinovirus respiratory infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell tra…

2020

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus/rhinoviruses (EvRh) are the most common cause of respiratory virus infections in recipients of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).; OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the value of the immunodeficiency scoring index (ISI) in predicting lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) progression and mortality in a prospective cohort of consecutive adult (> 16 years) allo-HSCT recipients with EvRh infection from December 1 2013 to December 1 2019 at two Spanish transplant centers.; RESULTS: We included 234 allo-HSCT recipients with 383 EvRh episodes. Out of 383 EvRh episodes, 98 (25%) had LRTD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified three independent fac…

Nomograms including nuclear matrix protein 22 for prediction of disease recurrence and progression in patients with Ta, T1 or CIS transitional cell c…

2005

ABSTRACT Purpose: We developed and validated nomograms that accurately predict disease recurrence and progression in patients with Ta, T1, or CIS transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder using a large international cohort. Methods: Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models targeted histologically confirmed disease recurrence, and focused on 2,542 patients with bladder TCC from 10 participating centers. Variables consisted of pre-cystoscopy voided urine Nuclear Matrix Protein 22 (NMP22) assay, urine cytology, age and gender. Resulting nomograms were internally validated with bootstrapping. Nomogram performance was explored graphically with Loess smoothing plots. Results:…

Liver transplanted patients with preoperative autoimmune hepatitis and immunological disorders are at increased risk for Post-Transplant Lymphoprolif…

2010

Long term immunosuppression and therapy of acute rejections result in a 20-120-fold increased risk to develop Non Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Since immunosuppressive therapy and immunological disorders are major risk factors for the development of NHL in the non-transplant population we aimed to analyze risk factors for PTLD in our cohort of liver transplanted (LT) patients. We analyzed retrospectively 431 patients liver transplanted between 1998 and 2008.PTLD was diagnosed in eleven of 431 patients (2.6%). PTLD, especially late PTLD, was significantly more frequent in patients who received steroids before LT (Kaplan-Meier: p0.001). Moreover PTLD in immunocompromised patients with preoperative s…

Association of TaqIB polymorphism in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene with plasma lipid levels in a healthy Spanish population.

2000

Genetic variants at the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) locus have been associated with CETP activity and mass, as well as plasma high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and apolipoprotein A-I levels. We have examined allele frequencies and lipid associations for the common CETP TaqIB polymorphism in a sample of 514 healthy subjects (231 men, mean age 37.4 years, and 283 women, mean age 35.7 years) residing in Valencia (Spain). The frequency of the less common TaqIB2 allele (0.351; 95% CI: 0.322-0. 380) was significantly lower than those reported for Northern European populations. Consistent with previous studies, we found a significant association of the TaqIB polymorphism w…
