Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer in Sicily: The Role of Environmental Characteristics
2017
Background: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare but extremely aggressive cancer of the thyroid, contributing up to 30-40% of thyroid cancer-specific mortality. We analyzed ATC characteristics and survival rates in Sicily to evaluate the possible influence of environmental factors. With this aim data regarding ATC incidences in urban/rural and industrial, iodine deficient and volcanic vs. control areas were compared in Sicily as well as ATC data from Sicily and USA. Methods: Using the Sicilian Register of Thyroid Cancer (SRTC) database incidence, age, gender, tumor size and histotype, extrathyroidal extension, stage and coexistence with pre-existing differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) …
Subjective symptoms related to GSM radiation from mobile phone base stations : a cross-sectional study
2013
Objectives: We performed a reanalysis of the data from Navarro et al., 2003, in which health symptoms related to microwave exposure from mobile phone base stations (BS) were explored, including data obtained in a retrospective inquiry about fear of exposure from BS. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: La Ñora (Murcia), Spain. Participants: Participants with known illness in 2003 were subsequently disregarded: 88 participants instead of 101 (in 2003) were analysed. Since weather circumstances can influence exposure, we restricted data to measurements made under similar weather conditions. Outcomes and methods: A statistical method indifferent to the assumption of normality was employed: …
Pregnancy e-health: a multicenter Italian cross-sectional study on internet use and decision-making among pregnant women
2013
Background Our study aimed to estimate the prevalence of pregnancy e-health seekers in a large Italian sample; to explore the factors influencing the choices of the childbearing women regarding their lifestyles after internet consultation; and finally to investigate potential differences between primiparous and multiparous women in internet use to find information about pregnancy. Methods A multicentre survey was carried out in seven Italian cities. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire administered in waiting rooms of outpatient departments by medical doctors. Respondents were questioned about their sociodemographic status, their use of the internet to seek pregnancy inform…
Total plasma protein in very preterm babies: prognostic value and comparison with illness severity scores
2013
International audience; OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the predictive value for severe adverse outcome of plasma protein measurements on day one of life in very preterm infants and to compare total plasma protein levels with the validated illness severity scores CRIB, CRIB-II, SNAP-II and SNAPPE-II, regarding their predictive ability for severe adverse outcome. METHODS: We analyzed a cohort of infants born at 24-31 weeks gestation, admitted to the tertiary intensive care unit of a university hospital over 10.5 years. The outcome measure was "severe adverse outcome" defined as death before discharge or severe neurological injury on cranial ultrasound. The adjusted odd ratio (aOR) and 95%…
Distribution of maternity units and spatial access to specialised care for women delivering before 32 weeks of gestation in Europe
2010
Contains fulltext : 88841.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Survival and quality of life are improved for very preterm babies when delivery occurs in a maternity unit with on-site neonatal intensive care (level III unit). We investigated the impact of distance on the probability of delivering in such a unit for births before 32 weeks of gestation from 9 European regions with diverse perinatal health systems (the MOSAIC cohort). We analysed distances between women's homes, and the nearest level III in population quartiles, adjusting for maternal and pregnancy characteristics. Living farther away from a level III reduced access to specialised care everywhere; in some regions women re…
Appreciation and implementation of a school-based intervention are associated with changes in fruit and vegetable intake in 10-to 13-year old schoolc…
2008
The purpose was to investigate the degree of implementation and appreciation of a comprehensive school-randomized fruit and vegetable intervention program and to what extent these factors were associated with changes in reported fruit and vegetable intake. The study was conducted among 10- to 13-year old children exposed to the intervention during the school year 2003-04 in Norway, Spain and the Netherlands. Children, parents and teachers completed questionnaires regarding (i) the implementation of the school curriculum, (ii) parental involvement, (iii) distribution of fruit and vegetables at school, (iv) children's appreciation of the project and (v) children's intake levels. Univariate an…
Prevalence, determinants and spectrum of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication of children and adolescents in Germany: results o…
2012
Objective To investigate the prevalence, determinants and spectrum of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication and its associations with socioeconomic status (SES), health-related behaviour and living conditions. Design Observational cross-sectional study. Setting Germany. Participants Representative population-based sample of non-institutionalised youth aged between 0 and 17 years (n=17 450) and examined between 2003 and 2006. Main outcome measure Prevalence and spectrum of ADHD medication (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) code N04BA) measured by standardised computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) on drug use. Results The overall prevalence of ADHD medication (s…
Prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and fetal growth in a cohort of pregnant women
2012
Objectives Scant evidence is available on effects of air pollution on longitudinally measured fetal biometry, and thus it remains unclear as to whether there are critical windows of exposure or specificity of effects. Our objective was to examine the association between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during pregnancy and fetal and neonatal anthropometry in a cohort of Spanish women. Methods Temporally adjusted land-use regression was used to estimate exposure to NO2 at home addresses. Biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) were evaluated in each trimester by ultrasound. As neonatal outcomes, weight, length and head cir…
Leukocytosis and Thrombosis At Diagnosis Are Associated with Poor Survival in Polycythemia Vera: A Population-Based Study on 327 Patients
2011
Abstract Abstract 2819 Introduction Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm with a long life expectancy. Consequently, long-term follow-up studies that focus on survival of PV patients must be conducted in order to register a sufficient number of events to provide informative results and statistical analyses. Most of the published studies are single-institution that focused on patients referred to hospitals, which does not necessarily reflect the course of PV in the general population. In these studies, the median age at diagnosis is younger than usually noted for PV patients in population-based studies. Moreover, survival is generally based on observed mortality, a good but…
Socio-professional status as a major determinant of disparities in cardiovascular outcomes: contemporary data on the prognosis inof manual workersmen…
2013
Introduction: Over the last decade in France, the early prognosis after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has markedly improved. However, recent work suggests persistent socioeconomic disparities in outcomes after AMI. From a regional population-based study, we analyzed the prognosis in manual workers after AMI. Patients: Patients recorded in the ObservatoiRe des Infarctus du myocarde de Cote d'Or (RICO) between 2001 and 2011, < 65 y, with a current professional activity and follow-up at one year. Socio-professional categories (SPC) were collected according to INSEE definition. The primary endpoint was combined mortality and hospitalization for heart failure. Results: Among the 1671 patient…
