Reversal of Hartmann's procedure: a single-centre experience of 533 consecutive cases.

2018

AIM Hartmann's procedure (HP) is common. However, restoration of intestinal continuity is not so frequent. The aim of this study was to determine predictive factors which might influence outcomes following the reversal of HP. METHOD All consecutive patients who underwent elective and emergency HP in a single institution between January 1999 and December 2014 were included. Data concerning patient, disease and treatment features were collected. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression models were used to determine prognostic factors. RESULTS A total of 533 consecutive patients underwent HP over the 16-year period. Factors that were associated with a higher probability of revers…

Playing tactics, contextual variables and offensive effectiveness in English Premier League soccer matches. A multilevel analysis.

2020

The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effects of tactical and contextual indicators on achieving offensive penetration and scoring opportunities in English Premier League (EPL) soccer matches. A total of 1971 team possessions from 20 random matches were evaluated by means of multidimensional observation. The EPL matches had a great proportion of fast attacks (36.0%) followed by combinative (29.6%), direct attacks (24.1%) and counterattacks (9.5%). Multilevel logistic regression models revealed that counterattacks (OR = 3.428; 95% CI: 2.004–5.864; P<0.001) were more effective to create goal scoring opportunities than combinative attacks, while direct attacks showed to be less…

Analysis of Autoantibody Repertoires in Sera of Patients with Glaucoma

2003

PURPOSE Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness worldwide. It is usually considered a neurodegenerative disease. There is evidence that an autoimmune mechanism is involved in the development of glaucoma in some patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the IgG autoantibody repertoires in sera of glaucoma patients and healthy subjects. METHODS A total of 82 patients were divided into four groups: healthy volunteers without any ocular disorders (CO, n = 30), patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG, n = 19), ocular hypertension (OHT, n = 16), and normal tension glaucoma (NTG, n = 17). All groups were matched for age and gender. The sera of these patients were tested against West…

Dicer and drosha expression and response to bevacizumab-based therapy in advanced colorectal cancer patients.

2013

PURPOSE: The miRNA-regulating enzymes Dicer and Drosha exhibit aberrant expression in several cancer types. Dicer and Drosha play a crucial role during the angiogenetic process in vitro and, for Dicer, in vivo. We aimed to investigate the potential role of Dicer and Drosha in predicting response to Bevacizumab-based therapy in advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. METHODS: Dicer and Drosha mRNA levels were analysed in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens from patients affected by advanced CRC treated with or without Bevacizumab-containing regimens (n=116 and n=50, respectively) and from patients with diverticulosis as control group (n=20). The experimental data were obtained usin…

A novel approach to define risk of stent thrombosis after percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents: the DERIVATION score.

2009

Recent studies of drug-eluting stents (DES) use in routine clinical practice have led to concern regarding their long-term safety and to questions about the adequacy of current antiplatelet therapy guidelines. This study sought to derivate a risk score for predicting stent thrombosis after drug-eluting stenting. The large single center DES Real-world Incremental Value in the erA of percutaneous revascularizaTION (DERIVATION) database, collecting data about 1,377 patients of any age undergoing PCI with DES as treatment for symptomatic coronary artery disease, was use for this purpose. Logistic regression and bootstrap procedure were used to select correlates of stent thrombosis that were sub…

Prognostic Implications of Tissue Doppler Imaging-Derived E/Ea Ratio in Acute Heart Failure Patients

2014

Background Tissue Doppler–derived transmitral to mitral annular early diastolic velocity ratio (E/Ea), as a noninvasive estimation of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures, is a strong prognosticator in various cardiac scenarios including chronic heart failure; nevertheless, its utility for risk stratification in the whole spectrum of acute heart failure (AHF) patients remains elusive. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the association between E/Ea ratio and 1-year mortality in nonselected patients with AHF. Methods The study included 417 consecutive patients admitted for AHF. Twenty-two patients were excluded due to nonaccurate Ea measurements, leaving the final sample to be 39…

Factors Associated with Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet among Adolescents Living in Sicily, Southern Italy

2013

The present study aimed to examine the factors associated with increased Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence among a sample of Italian adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1135 students (13–16 years) attending 13 secondary schools of Sicily, southern Italy. Validated instruments were used for dietary assessment and the KIDMED score to assess adolescents’ adherence to the MD. A higher adherence to the MD was associated with high socioeconomic status (Odds Ratio [OR] 1.53, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.03–2.26) and high physical activity (OR 1.19, 95% CI: 1.02–1.70), whereas lower adherence was associated with living in an urban environment (OR 0.65, 95% CI: 0.44–0.97) and b…

The role of sarcopenia in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: Prognostic marker or hyped parameter?

2019

BACKGROUND & AIMS Sarcopenia has emerged as a prognostic parameter in numerous cancer entities. Current research favours its role as a determining factor for overall survival (OS) in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC); however, it is unclear whether sarcopenia is a truly independent survival predictor if combined with established prognostic factors. METHODS Between 1997-2018, 417 patients with histopathologically confirmed ICC were referred to our centre, of whom 293 were included in this study. Cross-sectional imaging, laboratory examinations and histopathological reports were retrospectively analysed. Psoas muscle index (PMI) as easy-to-measure marker of sarcopenia was ca…

Specific codon 13 K-ras mutations are predictive of clinical outcome in colorectal cancer patients, whereas codon 12 K-ras mutations are associated w…

2002

Background: K-ras mutations, one of the earliest events observed in colorectal carcinogenesis, are mostly found in codons 12 and 13, and less frequently in codon 61, all three of which are estimated to be critical for the biological activity of the protein. Nevertheless the prognostic significance of such mutations remains controversial. Our purpose was to assess whether any or specific K-ras mutations in primary colorectal cancer had prognostic significance and were linked to clinico-pathological parameters. Patients and methods: Paired tumor and normal tissue samples from a consecutive series of 160 untreated patients (median of follow up 71 months), undergoing resective surgery for prima…

p53 mutations in L3-loop zinc-binding domain, DNA-ploidy, and S phase fraction are independent prognostic indicators in colorectal cancer: A prospect…

2002

p53 gene alterations are among the most common events observed in colorectal cancer, and are accompanied frequently by DNA aneuploidy and high proliferative activity. The prognostic significance of such mutations remains controversial. We prospectively evaluated the prognostic significance of p53 mutations, DNA-ploidy, and S phase fraction (SPF) in a consecutive series of 160 colorectal cancer patients (median follow-up 71 months). Tumor DNA was screened for p53 mutations by PCR/single-strand conformational polymorphism/sequencing. DNA-ploidy and SPF were assessed by DNA flow cytometry. p53 mutations were detected in 68 of 160 (42.5%) cases. In 56% (38 of 68) of these, p53 mutations were fou…
