Levels of trace elements in human hair samples of adolescents living near petrochemical plants

The aim of the study is a comparative analysis to investigate human hair metal profiles of adolescents residing near petrochemical plants (Sicily, Italy). We selected the small town of Augusta, Gela, and Pace del Mela, and a control area made up of the towns characterized by low anthropogenic activity. Twenty trace elements were measured in samples of scalp hair from adolescents (11–14 years old) of both genders. Hair samples were cleaned using a rigorous cleaning method, mineralized, and processed for analyses by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Thunnus thynnus (Atlantic bluefin tuna, ABT) and other tuna species reproduce in the Mediterranean Sea during the summer period. Despite the Central Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Sicily in particular, being a key spawning site for many tuna species, little is known on the effects of oceanographic variability on their larval distribution in this area. Docking and multivariate methods to explore HIV-1 drug-resistance: a comparative analysis

In this paper we describe a comparative analysis between multivariate and docking methods in the study of the drug resistance to the reverse transcriptase and the protease inhibitors. Statistical Multivariate Techniques for the Stock Location Assignment Problem

In previous papers we proposed to apply multivariate statistical methodologies, like Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and Seriation to the stock location assignment problem of a warehouse, often solved by considering the Cube per Order Index (COI). In this paper we compare the results by MDS, Seriation, a COI based method and the Maximum Path criterion, considering the data of a whole year of a Sicilian supermarket chain warehouse. The comparison is based on the simulated times to satisfy a sample of real orders.

A discrete mathematical model for addictive buying: Predicting the affected population evolution

This paper deals with the construction of a discrete mathematical model for addictive buying. Firstly, identifications of consumers buying behavior are performed by using multivariate statistical techniques based on real data bases and sociological approaches. Then the population is divided into appropriate groups according to the level of overbuying and a discrete compartmental model is constructed. The future short term addicted population is computed assuming several future economic scenarios. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

A multivariate statistical approach of X-ray fluorescence characterization of a large collection of reverse glass paintings

We present an X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) study combined with a multivariate approach that allow to detect compositional differences and similarities among the glass supports of a large set of reverse glass paintings belonging to the collection of the Mistretta museum. Reverse painting on glass is an old decorative technique used since the Roman time consisting in applying a cold paint layer on the reverse side of a glass support.
