Muon physics — Survey

The empirical basis of the minimal standard model has been consolidated in an impressive way, over the last seventeen years, by precision experiments at the meson factories. I illustrate this by means of selected examples of muonic weak interaction processes. I then describe an extension of Yang-Mills theory, inspired by noncommutative geometry, that yields precisely the standard model but fixes and explains some of its empirical input. In particular, this new approach yields a simple geometrical interpretation of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The algebraic framework of this approach offers a natural place for the lepton and quark matter fields and for inter-family mixing.

Probing decaying heavy dark matter with the 4-year IceCube HESE data

After the first four years of data taking, the IceCube neutrino telescope has observed 54 high-energy starting events (HESE) with deposited energies between 20 TeV and 2 PeV. The background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos is expected to be of about 20 events, all below 100 TeV, thus pointing towards the astrophysical origin of about 8 events per year in that data set. However, their precise origin remains unknown. Muon Anomaly from Lepton Vacuum Polarization and The Mellin--Barnes Representation

We evaluate, analytically, a specific class of eighth--order and tenth--order QED contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. They are generated by Feynman diagrams involving lowest order vacuum polarization insertions of leptons $l=e,\mu$, and $\tau$. The results are given in the form of analytic expansions in terms of the mass ratios $m_e/m_\mu$ and $m_\mu/m_\tau$. We compute as many terms as required by the error induced by the present experimental uncertainty on the lepton masses. K− over K+ multiplicity ratio for kaons produced in DIS with a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall …

Ordinary muon capture studies for the matrix elements in ββ decay

Precise measurement of $\gamma$-rays following ordinary (non-radiative) capture of negative muons by natural Se, Kr, Cd and Sm, as well as isotopically enriched $^{48}$Ti, $^{76}$Se, $^{82}$Kr, $^{106}$Cd and $^{150}$Sm targets was performed by means of HPGe detectors. Energy and time distributions were investigated and total life time of negative muon in different isotopes was deduced. Search for contact interactions and large extra dimensions in dilepton events fromppcollisions ats=7  TeVwith the ATLAS detector

A search for nonresonant new phenomena, originating from either contact interactions or large extra spatial dimensions, has been carried out using events with two isolated electrons or muons. These events, produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV, were recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data sample, collected throughout 2011, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 and 5.0 fb(-1) in the e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels, respectively. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Impact of CP-violation on neutrino lepton number asymmetries revisited

We revisit the effect of the (Dirac) CP-violating phase on neutrino lepton number asymmetries in both mass- and flavor-basis. We found that, even if there are sizable effects on muon- and tau-neutrino asymmetries, the effect on the asymmetry of electron-neutrinos is at most similar to the upper bound set by BBN for initial neutrino degeneracy parameters smaller than order unity. We also found that, for the asymmetries in mass-basis, the changes caused by CP-violation is of sub-\% level which is unlikely to be accesible neither in the current nor in the forthcoming experiments.

Testing WWγ vertex in radiative muon decay

Large numbers of muons will be produced at facilities developed to probe the lepton-flavor-violating process μ→eγ. We show that by constructing a suitable asymmetry, radiative muon decay μ→eγνμν̄e can also be used to test the WWγ vertex at such facilities. The process has two missing neutrinos in the final state, and upon integrating their momenta the partial differential decay rate shows no radiation-amplitude zero. However, we establish that an easily separable part of the normalized differential decay rate that is odd under the exchange of photon and electron energies does have a zero in the case of the standard model (SM). New ALICE detectors for Run 3 and 4 at the CERN LHC

Abstract Run 3 at the CERN LHC is scheduled to start in March 2021. In preparation for this new data taking period the ALICE experiment is making major modifications to its subsystems and is introducing three new detectors: the new Inner Tracking System, the Muon Forward Tracker, and the Fast Interaction Trigger. The new detectors will enhance tracking, especially at low transverse momenta, improve vertexing, provide the required triggering, fast timing, luminosity, and forward multiplicity functionality. Measurement of the Higgs boson mass from theH→γγandH→ZZ*→4ℓchannels inppcollisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

An improved measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson is derived from a combined fit to the reconstructed invariant mass spectra of the decay channels H -> gamma gamma and H -> ZZ* -> 4l. The analysis uses the pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb(-1). The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is m(H) = 125.36 +/- 0.37(stat) +/- 0.18 (syst) GeV.
