Bilateral and Unilateral Neuromuscular Function and Muscle Cross-Sectional Area in Middle-Aged and Elderly Men and Women

Forty-eight healthy men (M) and women (W), divided into two different age groups, i.e., M50 yrs (range 44-57; n = 12), W50 yrs (range 43-57; n = 12), M70 yrs (range 59-75; n = 12), and W70 yrs (range 62-75; n = 12), volunteered as subjects for examination of muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), maximal voluntary forces, force-time curves, and electromyographic activity of the knee extensor muscles during bilateral and unilateral isometric contractions. The maximal bilateral knee extension force and the average CSA values in M50 were greater (p < .05) than in M70 and in W50 were greater (p < .05-.001) than those recorded for W70. DNA-fragmentation and apoptosis-related proteins of muscle cells in motor neuron disorders

Apoptosis has been described as one of the mechanisms of muscle fiber loss in infantile spinal muscular atrophy. In order to investigate if muscle fiber-apoptosis plays a role in other denervating disorders as well, we studied DNA-fragmentation, a hallmark of apoptosis, by the TUNEL-method and, moreover, the expression patterns of apoptosis-related proteins in 2 patients suffering from ALS and in 6 patients with polyneuropathy. We identified DNA-cleavage in muscle fibers of all these patients. Furthermore, we found strong expression of bax and ICE promoting apoptosis in muscle fibers. Effect of electrode location on surface electromyography changes due to eccentric elbow flexor exercise.

Experiments were carried out to determine whether the location of electrodes has an effect on eccentric exercise–induced changes in surface electromyography (sEMG) variables in the biceps brachii muscle. sEMG signals were recorded with a grid of 64 electrodes before and up to 4 days post-exercise. Root mean square (RMS) and mean power frequency (MNF) were calculated for: (1) each channel; (2) as an average of all channels; and (3) as an average of individual channel rows and columns. Apoptosis-related Proteins in Skeletal Muscle Fibers of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

There is evidence that apoptosis in spinal muscular atrophies (SMA) is not restricted to motor neurons but also affects muscle fibers. Studying the expression of several apoptosis-associated proteins we found constant expression of bax in muscle fibers, which promoted cell death. The expression of bax correlated with defective innervation of muscle fibers was also indicated by upregulation of N-CAM. While in early-onset SMA atrophic as well as normo- and hypertrophic muscle fibers displayed expression of bax, muscle fibers in late-onset SMA and peripheral neuropathies showed bax-expression only in atrophic fibers. Aging, muscle fiber type, and contractile function in sprint-trained athletes

Biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis of 18- to 84-yr-old male sprinters ( n = 91). Fiber-type distribution, cross-sectional area, and myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform content were identified using ATPase histochemistry and SDS-PAGE. Specific tension and maximum shortening velocity ( Vo) were determined in 144 single skinned fibers from younger (18–33 yr, n = 8) and older (53–77 yr, n = 9) runners. Is the V˙o 2 slow component dependent on progressive recruitment of fast-twitch fibers in trained runners?

The goal of this study was to use spectral analysis of EMG data to test the hypothesis that the O2 uptake (V˙o 2) slow component is due to a recruitment of fast fibers. Thirteen runners carried out a treadmill test with a constant speed, corresponding to 95% of the velocity associated with maximal V˙o 2. Effects of power training on muscle structure and neuromuscular performance

The present study examines changes in muscle structure and neuromuscular performance induced by 15 weeks of power training with explosive muscle actions. Twenty-three subjects, including 10 controls, volunteered for the study. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the gastrocnemius muscle before and after the training period, while maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC) and drop jump tests were performed once every fifth week.
