Abdominal wall defects: two- versus three-dimensional ultrasonographic diagnosis.

We diagnosed 12 cases of abdominal wall defects. The cases diagnosed occurred in 6 fetuses with omphalocele, 3 with gastroschisis, 2 with prune-belly syndrome, and 1 with pentalogy of Cantrell. Except for 1 case of gastroschisis first diagnosed on the basis of three-dimensional ultrasonography at 14 weeks' gestation, all cases were first detected by two-dimensional transabdominal ultrasonography and then reevaluated with three-dimensional ultrasonography using multiplanar and orthogonal plane modes. Ankle muscle strength discriminates fallers from non-fallers

International audience; It is well known that center of pressure (CoP) displacement correlates negatively with the maximal isometric torque (MIT) of ankle muscles. This relationship has never been investigated in elderly fallers (EF). The purpose of this study was thus to analyze the relationship between the MIT of ankle muscles and CoP displacement in upright stance in a sample aged between 18 and 90 years old that included EF . Ocular Motor Palsy After Spinal Puncture

Abstract Ocular motor palsy is a rare but alarming complication of subarachnoid puncture. In order to better understand this condition, a literature search was performed in English of PubMed articles for cranial nerves III, IV, and VI palsies after spinal puncture. Sixty-five articles (dated 1930–2015) were identified, and 114 cases were obtained for analysis. Subarachnoid anesthesia was the most frequent cause (45.6%), with a higher incidence for females than males. The age of patients was 40.24 ± 13.35 years (age range, 6–71 years). Muscle pathology in 57 patients with myotonic dystrophy type 2

We evaluated muscle biopsies from 57 patients with genetically confirmed myotonic dystrophy type 2/proximal myotonic myopathy (DM2/PROMM). Light microscopy showed myopathic together with “denervation-like” changes in almost all biopsies obtained from four different muscles: increased fiber size variation, internal nuclei, small angulated fibers, pyknotic nuclear clumps, and predominant type 2 fiber atrophy. Quantitative morphometry in 18 biopsies that were immunostained for myosin heavy chain confirmed a predominance of nonselective type 2 fiber atrophy. Quantitative study of muscle fibre atrophy and restitution after nerve grafts.

Our comparative experimental studies on rabbits using clinical, electromyographical, and quantitative histological examinations of long autologous and homologous nerve grafts in 35 rabbits, paying special attention to quantitative histological changes in the gastrocnemius muscles, allow the statement that, compared to the short homografts, the long homografts showed worse results. Moreover, it became obvious that the regeneration rate of autografts was not influenced by increasing the lengths of the grafts. The answer to the question of how far even longer grafts may influence the quality of regeneration will need further investigations.

Deflazacort in Duchenne dystrophy: Study of long-term effect

A randomized double-blind controlled trial of deflazacort was conducted in 28 Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients either treated with deflazacort 2.0 mg/kg alternate-day therapy or placebo. The deflazacort group showed significant improvement in climbing stairs (P < 0.01), in rising from a chair, Gower's maneuver, and walking (P < 0.0025) after 6 months of treatment. After 1 year, all the above changes remained significantly improved and the MRC index was significantly better (P < 0.05) in the treated group. Results of the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD)

Since 1980, when we developed substitute for the internal anal sphicter, the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD-plasty), we have operated on seven children using this method, usually in combination with the pull-through procedure, and on five children after one or more previous operations. Since 1983, 11 cases with previous operations have undergone the modified “door-wing” SMFD-plasty. The results are excellent if the operation is used in primary combination with the pull-through procedure or if the “door-wing” modification is combined with reconstruction of the pelvic floor. It is also necessary that all cases undergo a biofeedback conditioning program.

Pentobarbital-sensitive EDHF comediates ACh-induced arteriolar dilation in the hamster microcirculation

It is unclear to what extent the endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) contributes to the control of microcirculatory blood flow in vivo. We analyzed, by intravital microscopy in hamster muscles, the potential role of EDHF along the vascular tree under stimulated (ACh) or basal conditions. Experiments were performed in conscious as well as anesthetized (pentobarbital, urethan) animals. Additionally, cellular effects of the potential EDHF were studied in isolated small arteries.
