Exercise has played a central role in rehabilitation of subjects with low back pain. The research in this field has intensified since the 1980s. Low back pain has been associated with both physically stressful and sedentary occupations. There is no clear association between low back pain and physical activity during leisure time. Many studies have shown that subjects with back pain have impairments in muscular and connective tissue, functional limitations in muscular strength, endurance, speed, and neuromuscular functions, and physical, social and psychological disabilities. The effect of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DB-c-AMP; 3 X 10(-4)-3 X 10(-3) M) on electrically induced twitch and high potassium (142.4 mM KCl)-induced contracture tension was studied in papillary muscles from normal and reserpinized cats ([Ca]0 1.8 mM; 25 degrees C; pH 7.4). In both groups of preparations, the increase in twitch tension evoked by DB-c-AMP was accompanied by an abbreviation of the time to peak force and of relaxation time. In the same preparations, the high potassium contracture was markedly depressed by DB-c-AMP in a concentration-dependent manner. Effect of histamine on the longitudinal and circular muscle of the oestrogen dominated rat uterus.

The response of the longitudinal and circular myometrial strips to histamine was studied in oestrogen-treated rats. Histamine produced a dose-related inhibitory response in KCl-contracted longitudinal and circular uterine strips. Histamine was equipotent in producing the relaxant response but the maximal effect achieved in the longitudinal muscle was higher than the circular one. Ranitidine antagonized the histamine-induced relaxation with a similar dose ratio in both longitudinal and circular strips. Effects of sodium fluoride on the mechanical activity in mouse gastric preparations.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the responses induced by sodium fluoride (NaF) on gastric mechanical activity, using mouse whole-stomach preparations. The mechanical activity was recorded in vitro as changes of intraluminal pressure. In most of the preparations, NaF induced a tetrodotoxin-insensitive biphasic effect characterized by early relaxation followed by slowly developing contractile response. The contraction was dependent on the concentration of NaF, whereas the relaxation was observed at only 10–30 mmol/L NaF. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Pompe disease (PD) are common neuromuscular disorders during childhood causing progressive weakness of proximal muscles with gait disturbances, loss of ambulation and breathing difficulties. Whereas SMA is the result of a neurogenic atrophy caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene, PD is a lysosomal glycogen storage disease (type II) due to mutations of the GAA gene responsible for the enzyme activity of acid alpha-1,4-glucosidase. Dystrophin associated protein alpha-syntrophin is known to interact with voltage-gated sodium ion channel (NaCh). Dystrophin is known to be sensitive to eccentric muscle actions. For this reason, the function of the NaChs might also be affected. Molecular adaptations of dystrophin, alpha-syntrophin and NaChs were investigated after fatiguing stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise, which consisted of unilateral jumps on a sledge apparatus. Gender differences in skeletal muscle fibre damage after eccentrically biased downhill running in rats

Specific antibodies against structural proteins of muscle fibres (actin, desmin, dystrophin) and extracellular matrix (fibronectin) were used to study the effect of eccentrically biased downhill running exercise (13,5 degrees, 17 m min(-1), 130 min) on the magnitude and properties of myofibre injury in the quadriceps femoris muscle of male and female rats.
