The increase in blood pressure observed during physical activities is exaggerated in patients with hypertension, exposing them to a higher cardiovascular risk.Neural signals from the skeletal muscles appear to be overactive, resulting in this abnormal response in hypertensive patients.In the present study, we tested whether the attenuation of these neural signals in hypertensive patients could normalize their abnormal increase in blood pressure during physical activity.Attenuation of the neural signals from the leg muscles with intrathecal fentanyl injection reduced the blood pressure of hypertensive men during cycling exercise to a level comparable to that of normotensive men.Skeletal musc…

The significance of the triceps surae muscle action as a determinant in the biomechanical genesis of ski fall injuries

In an epidemiologic study of 700 ski fall injuries YOUNG /1/ established a classification of the different fall modes involved. In more than 60 % of all falls that lead to an injury he found a forward bending motion of the body which is frequently coupled with a twisting of the body around the lower extremity. This clearly shows the importance of the forward motion component of the skier’s body in ski fall traumatology. The type of injury and its location depend on the action of the ski binding system. The influence of monensin (10 µmol/L) alone and in the presence of verapamil (3 µmol/L) or ouabain (1 mmol) and prazosin (1 µmol/L) or glibenclamide (10 µmol/L) were studied on the muscle tension of guinea pig aorta. Changes in tissue sodium, potassium and calcium ion contents of the aortic muscle produced by monensin in the presence of prazosin were evaluated. Monensin in normal Tyrode's solution containing prazosin caused an increase in the resting tension followed by a decrease and returned to normal values. Diamond-Shaped Mini-Craniotomy: A New Concept in Neurosurgery

Abstract Background We describe, step by step, a modified, less invasive, diamond-shaped mini-craniotomy that optimizes dural opening and can be performed in elderly patients affected by acute subdural or intracerebral hematomas, in therapy with antiplatelets or anticoagulants. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical records of 67 patients (mean age of 78.5 years) treated in our institution, during a period of 10 years, with this novel diamond-shaped craniotomy. El objetivo del estudio es conocer cómo influye la masa muscular de la extremidad inferior y superior en el volumen de oxigeno máximo por kilogramo de masa muscular (VO2max/Kgmus/min) en jóvenes deportistas en función de su especialidad deportiva y grupo de edad.
