Mutations in dysferlin cause a type of muscular dystrophy known as dysferlinopathy. Dysferlin may be involved in muscle repair and differentiation. We compared normal human skeletal muscle cultures expressing dysferlin with muscle cultures from dysferlinopathy patients. We quantified the fusion index of myoblasts as a measure of muscle development and conducted optic and electronic microscopy, immunofluorescence, Western blot, flow cytometry, and real-time PCR at different developmental stages. Electrical brain activity and facial electromyography responses to irony in dysphoric and non-dysphoric participants

We studied irony comprehension and emotional reactions to irony in dysphoric and control participants. Electroencephalography (EEG) and facial electromyography (EMG) were measured when spoken conversations were presented with pictures that provided either congruent (non-ironic) or incongruent (ironic) contexts. In a separate session, participants evaluated the congruency and valence of the stimuli. While both groups rated ironic stimuli funnier than non-ironic stimuli, the control group rated all the stimuli funnier than the dysphoric group. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pedalling rate on the pattern of mechanical torque application and on neuromuscular fatigue during prolonged cycling exercise. Eleven well-trained individuals performed three 1-h pedalling sessions, at 50 rev.min-1, 110 rev.min-1 and a freely chosen cadence, at an intensity corresponding to 65% of their maximal aerobic power. Critical surgical and medical advances have shifted the focus of congenital heart disease (CHD) patients from survival to achievement of a greater health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HRQoL is influenced, amongst other factors, by aerobic capacity and respiratory muscle strength, both of which are reduced in CHD patients. Abstract 1 (--)-D-600 and (+)-D-600 exerted concentration-dependent negative inotropic effects in papillary muscles from cats, the potency of (--)-D-600 being about 100 times greater than that of (+)-D-600. The action was more pronounced at high than at low frequencies of stimulation. Pancuronium improves the neuromuscular transmission defect of human organophosphate intoxication.

Two patients with acute severe organophosphate intoxication showed (1) single evoked compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) with repetitive discharges and (2) prominent decremental responses of CMAP with 20 and 50 Hz supramaximal nerve stimulation. Following the intravenous injection of single small doses of pancuronium, marked improvement in these abnormalities occurred and persisted for several hours. We postulate that the physiologic improvement following low-dose pancuronium results from blockade of acetylcholine receptors, especially those located on the terminal axon responsible for antidromic backfiring.
