Baseline assessment of heavy metals content and trophic position of the invasive blue swimming crab Portunus segnis (Forskål, 1775) in the Gulf of Ga…
2018
This study provides a baseline assessment of cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, lead, and zinc concentrations in muscles, gills, and exoskeleton of the Lessepsian blue swimming crab Portunus segnis captured in the Gulf of Gabès (Southern Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia) in November 2015. Furthermore, the species’ trophic position is estimated using CN stable isotope analysis. The exoskeleton showed the lowest metal contents; in soft tissues, the essential Cu, Fe, and Zn and the non-essential Cd, Mn, and Pb showed the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The crab was characterized by a trophic position of 3.32, confirming its carnivorous trophic habits. Compared with literature data on…
Neck and Shoulder Muscle Activation Among Experienced and Inexperienced Pilots in +Gz Exposure
2017
Background The aim of the present study was to compare differences in electromyography (EMG) activation of the neck and shoulder muscles between groups of inexperienced and experienced pilots during controlled +Gz exposure in a centrifuge. Methods The subjects were volunteer cadets (inexperienced group) and lieutenants (experienced group) undergoing their first centrifuge training. The first group did not have any high performance aircraft (HPA) experience, while the latter one had a 1-yr experience of intense flying of HPA. During the centrifuge run, EMG activity was recorded from the left and right shoulder, neck flexor, and neck extensor muscles. Results The pilots without HPA experience…
Immediate effects of the respiratory stimulation on ventilation parameters in ischemic stroke survivors: A randomized interventional study (CONSORT).
2019
Background: Post-stroke brain damage, which affects the central control of respiration, leads to various respiratory disorders. They can be caused by the weakening of the respiratory muscles and chest movements, which can indirectly contribute to an impairment of the ventilation function. The aim of the study is an objective assessment of the effect of a single-session intervention of respiratory stimulation through Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on chosen respiratory parameters and the following comparison of these changes with a group in which positioning was used (intra- and intergroup comparison). Methods: This was a randomized interventional study evaluating the respir…
Determinants of dynamic inspiratory muscle strength in healthy trained elderly.
2021
Background: The S-Index assessed by means of electronic devices is a measure of Inspiratory Muscle Strength (IMS) that highly correlates with the maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP). The variables involved when using regression models for the prediction of IMS/MIP depend on both the sample characteristics and the device or protocol used. In light of the scarce information on the influence of physical activity (PA) on IMS in healthy older adults (OA), together with the incorporation of new assessment devices, the objectives of this research are: 1) to determine which factors influence the IMS in a group of trained OA, using a portable electronic device; and 2) to propose a regression model to…
Respiratory Muscle Strengths and Their Association with Lean Mass and Handgrip Strengths in Older Institutionalized Individuals
2020
The study of reduced respiratory muscle strengths in relation to the loss of muscular function associated with ageing is of great interest in the study of sarcopenia in older institutionalized individuals. The present study assesses the association between respiratory muscle parameters and skeletal mass content and strength, and analyzes associations with blood cell counts and biochemical parameters related to protein, lipid, glucose and ion profiles. A multicenter cross-sectional study was performed among patients institutionalized in nursing homes. The respiratory muscle function was evaluated by peak expiratory flow, maximal respiratory pressures and spirometry parameters, and skeletal m…
Influence of inorganic pyrophosphate on the kinetics of muscle pyruvate kinase: a simple nonallosteric feedback model.
2002
Potassium pyrophosphate was used instead of ATP as a model ligand for magnesium cation for the study of effector influence on the kinetics of pyruvate kinase muscle isozyme M1. The pyruvate kinase activation by low concentration of pyrophosphate and inhibition by high concentration of pyrophosphate was considered to be the result of reversible reactions of magnesium cation with pyrophosphate, ADP, ATP, and PEP. The apparent Km and Vm or in some cases the pseudo-first order reaction rate constant (instead of Km and Vm) of pyruvate kinase at any given pyrophosphate concentration were analysed as a function of concentration of free magnesium cation and its complexes with all ligands present in…
Phenotypic spectrum and incidence of TRPV4 mutations in patients with inherited axonal neuropathy.
2014
Objective: To clarify the phenotypic spectrum and incidence of TRPV4 mutations in patients with inherited axonal neuropathies. Methods: We screened for TRPV4 mutations in 169 French unrelated patients with inherited axonal peripheral neuropathy. Ninety-five patients had dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 (CMT2) disease, and 74 patients, including 39 patients with distal hereditary motor neuropathy, 14 with congenital spinal muscular atrophy and arthrogryposis, 13 with CMT2, and 8 with scapuloperoneal spinal muscular atrophy, presented with additional vocal cord paralysis and/or skeletal dysplasia. Results: No deleterious TRPV4 mutation was identified in the 95 patients with “pure” CMT2 (0/…
Novel triplet of flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of the snail, Helix pomatia.
2012
The anatomy of three novel flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of Helix pomatia is described. The muscles originate from the ventral side of the sensory pad and are anchored at different sites in the base of the tentacle stem. The muscles span the tentacle and always take the length of the stem which depends on the rate of tentacle protrusion indicating that the muscles are both contractile and extremely stretchable. The three anchoring points at the base of the stem determine three space axes along which the contraction of a muscle or the synchronous contraction of the muscles can move the tentacle in space.
Diagnosis of papillary muscle rupture after acute myocardial infarction by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.
1993
The sensitivity of transthoracic echocardiography to visualize the structural abnormality of papillary muscle rupture (PMR) after acute myocardial infarction can be anticipated to average about 50%; therefore, we evaluated five patients exhibiting the condition with both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. The use of the two imaging techniques resulted in the fact that no instance of PMR was missed. Using transthoracic echocardiography in two patients and transesophageal echocardiography in four, the ruptured papillary muscle was visualized directly. Mitral insufficiency as an indirect sign was observed in all patients. In one patient the papillary muscle rupture developed i…
Trichinella spiralisThymidylate Synthase: Developmental Pattern, Isolation, Molecular Properties, and Inhibition by Substrate and Cofactor Analogues
1996
Abstract Thymidylate synthase specific activity was found to remain at a constant level in crude extracts from muscle larvae, isolated (1-15 months after infection) by pepsin-HCl digestion, as well as from adult worms ofTrichinella spiralis. The enzyme was purified and its molecular (monomer mol. wt 35 kD) and kinetic (sequential mechanism with the Kmvalues 3.1 and 19 μM for dUMP and N5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate, respectively) properties determined. 5-Fluoro-dUMP was a competitive, slow-binding inhibitor of the parasite enzyme. N5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate analogues 10-propargyl-5,8-dideazafolate (CB3717), ZD1694, BW1843U89, and AG337 were weaker inhibitors of the parasite than regener…
