Effects of mandibular advancement surgery on the temporomandibular joint and muscular and articular adaptive changes--a systematic review.

2016

The objective of this study was to assess the anatomical changes to the condyle and articular disc following mandibular advancement surgery, the adaptation of the masticatory muscles, and the improvement or worsening of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in patients with pre-existing disorders and those who developed them following surgery. Four databases were searched systematically: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Of the 544 articles initially selected, 219 were duplicates and a further 165 were excluded on the basis of their titles and abstracts. On reading the full text, 89 were excluded because they were of no interest and 43 because they did not meet the inclusion criteri…

Unusual recurrence of trigeminal neuralgia after microvascular decompression by muscle interposal.

2011

Summary Background Patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and persistent or recurrent facial pain after microvascular decompression (MVD) typically undergo less invasive procedures in the hope of providing pain relief. However, re-operation should be considered in selected patients. Case Report A 48-year-old woman presented with recurrent trigeminal neuralgia (TN) 3 years following microvascular decompression (MVD). The patient underwent brain magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which did not reveal neurovascular compression; therefore surgical re-exploration was carried out. During the operation, the fifth cranial nerve was seen without impingement from any blood vessels; however, a ver…

Recovery of Inflammation, Cardiac, and Muscle Damage Biomarkers After Running a Marathon

2019

Bernat-Adell, MD, Collado-Boira, EJ, Moles-Julio, P, Panizo-González, N, Martínez-Navarro, I, Hernando-Fuster, B, and Hernando-Domingo, C. Recovery of inflammation, cardiac and muscle damage biomarkers after running a marathon. J Strength Cond Res 35(3): 626-632, 2021-Physical endurance sports conditions the increase of blood biomarkers responsible for the acute inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to observe the impact of intense physical exercise on these biomarkers and detect their recovery pattern. This is an experimental study of repeated measures (pre-post marathon). The biomarkers lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), high-sensitivity troponin T (hs-TNT),…

Differences in myoelectric activity of the lumbar muscles between recurrent and chronic low back pain: a cross-sectional study

2021

Abstract Background Altered lower back muscle activity is proposed as a contributing factor to the reoccurrence and chronicity of low back pain (LBP). This study compared lumbar muscle activity during trunk extension in patients with continuous chronic LBP (CLBP), non-continuous CLBP, recurrent LBP (RLBP) and healthy subjects. Methods In 75 subjects (16 continuous CLBP, 15 non-continuous CLBP, 23 RLBP, 21 healthy controls), surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the lumbar erector spinae (ES), multifidus (MF), latissimus dorsi (LD) and gluteus maximus (GM) was recorded during the concentric, holding and eccentric phase of a modified Biering Sorenson exercise. Results Continuous CLBP pa…

Muscle cramping in the marathon: dehydration and electrolyte depletion vs. muscle damage

2020

Martinez-Navarro, I, Montoya-Vieco, A, Collado, E, Hernando, B, Panizo, N, and Hernando, C. Muscle Cramping in the marathon: Dehydration and electrolyte depletion vs. muscle damage. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-Our aim was to compare dehydration variables, serum electrolytes, and muscle damage serum markers between runners who suffered exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMC) and runners who did not suffer EAMC in a road marathon. We were also interested in analyzing race pacing and training background. Nighty-eight marathoners took part in the study. Subjects were subjected to a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Before and after the race, blood and urine samples were collected and…

Does δ-sarcoglycan-associated autosomal-dominant cardiomyopathy exist?

2009

In this study we clinically and genetically characterize a consanguineous family with a homozygous novel missense mutation in the delta-sarcoglycan gene and a second delta-sarcoglycan mutation that has previously been reported to cause severe autosomal-dominant dilated cardiomyopathy. We identified a novel missense mutation in exon 6 (p.A131P) of the delta-sarcoglycan gene, which in a homozygous state leads to the clinical picture of a limb girdle muscular dystrophy. In four heterozygous carriers for the mutation, aged 3-64 years, a second sequence variant in exon 6 (p.S151A) of the delta-sarcoglycan gene was detected on the other allele. This second missense change had previously been repo…

Transcriptional profiles from patients with dystrophinopathies and limb girdle muscular dystrophies as determined by qRT-PCR.

2003

Mutations in genes coding for the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) cause inherited muscular dystrophies (MD), including Morbus Duchenne (DMD) and M. Becker (BMB) as well as limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD). New insights into the pathophysiology of the dystrophic muscle, the identification of compensatory mechanisms and additional proteins interacting with dystrophin are essential for developing new treatments. In order to define molecular mechanisms induced by lack of dystrophin and the subsequent counter-regulatory transcriptional response of degenerating muscle fibres, we have investigated the mRNA expression of 19 functionally linked genes in biopsies of patients with MD by m…

Psychological variables and temporomandibular disorders: distress, coping, and personality.

2004

Abstract Objective This study analyzes the psychological variables of distress, personality, and coping that are related to the diagnosis based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for temporomandibular disorder. Study design An age and sex-matched controlled study conducted with a convenience sample (n = 89) in a tertiary care facility. Results The MANCOVA between the muscular (n = 47), articular (n = 42), and control groups (n = 100) showed that the muscular group differed from the control group, obtaining higher levels of distress, anxiety, and depression, and minor use of positive reinterpretation and humor as coping strategies; the articular group also showed higher distress, less posit…

A comparison of lumbopelvic motion patterns and erector spinae behavior between asymptomatic subjects and patients with recurrent low back pain durin…

2015

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the patterns of lumbopelvic motion and erector spinae (ES) activity during trunk flexion-extension movements and to compare these patterns between patients with recurrent low back pain (LBP) in their pain-free periods and matched asymptomatic subjects. Methods: Thirty subjects participated (15 patients with disc herniation and recurrent LBP in their pain-free periods and 15 asymptomatic control subjects). A 3-dimensional videophotogrammetric system and surface electromyography (EMG) were used to record the angular displacements of the lumbar spine and hip in the sagittal plane and the EMG activity of the ES during standardized trunk fle…
