Focal myositis of the temporal muscle

Focal myositis is a rare inflammatory disease of the skeletal muscle that may involve any part of the body. We present a 19-year-old man with a short history of a painful pseudotumor in the right temporal region. MRI pictures showed a swollen right temporal muscle and muscle biopsy revealed the characteristic histological and immunocytochemical findings of polymyositis.

Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is considered one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, comprising dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The heterogeneous group of necrotizing myopathies shows a varying amount of necrotic muscle fibers, myophagocytosis, and a sparse inflammatory infiltrate. Whole body frontal plane mechanics across walking, running, and sprinting in young and older adults

This study investigated the whole body frontal plane mechanics among young (26 ± 6 years), early old (61 ± 5 years), and old (78 ± 4 years) adults during walking, running, and sprinting. The age-groups had similar walking (1.6 m/s) and running (4.0 m/s) speeds, but different maximal sprinting speed (young 9.3 m/s, early old 7.9 m/s, and old 6.6 m/s). Surprisingly, although the old group exerted much lower vertical ground reaction force during running and sprinting, the hip frontal plane moment did not differ between the age-groups. Kinematic analysis demonstrated increased hip adduction and pelvis drop, as well as reduced trunk lateral flexion among old adults, especially during sprinting. …

Force-velocity and power-velocity curves in a vertical jump involving movements around several joints were derived from vertical ground reaction forces and knee angular velocities. The jumps were performed with weights from 10 to 160 kg added on the shoulders. The obtained curves from a semi-squatting static starting position resembled those reported for isolated muscles or single muscle groups. The aim of the present study was to estimate the damping coefficient (B factor) of the elbow flexor muscles during both eccentric and concentric muscle actions. We used a muscle model consisting of a viscous damper associated in parallel with a contractile component, both in series with an elastic component. The viscous damper allowed the concentric loss and the eccentric gain of force to be modelled. Eight volunteer subjects performed maximal eccentric and concentric elbow movements on an isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 0.52, 1.04 and 2.09 rad*s(-1). Changes in the probability of firing of motor units following electrical stimulation in human limb muscles

Changes in the probability of motor unit firing was studied in ten different muscles (six muscles in the upper extremity and four muscles in the lower extremity) of eleven healthy human subjects. The responses were elicited by the electrical stimulation of cutaneous or mixed nerves during weak voluntary contraction of the muscle studied, and were recorded by averaging the rectified surface electromyogram. In eight of the ten muscles, well-detectable, short and long latency excitatory phases were observed.
