Revival e società a Palermo nell’Ottocento. Committenza, architetture, arredi tra identità siciliana e prospettiva nazionale
2020

Ethnographic challenges to studying the poor in and from the global South
2020
The ethnographic challenges of studying urban poor communities in the global South have been rarely addressed from a methodological standpoint. These issues are also relevant to studies of, and work with, migrants from the global South. Based on nearly 300 interviews conducted between 2010 and 2018 in low-income neighbourhoods of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the last 20 of which were conducted through Skype interviews through mobile phone. I discuss the benefits and disadvantages of using Skype for interviewing in the global South. I then consider some challenges of conducting interviews among individuals with extremely low education levels, whose basic needs are not met in their daily lives. T…
Regimes of patriarchy and faith : reflections on challenges in interviewing women and religious minorities in Pakistan
2023
PurposeThis paper discusses the challenges that two doctoral researchers faced while researching religious minorities and women in a culturally sensitive society such as Pakistan. Their shared interest in sensitive topics related to gender and minorities in Pakistan led both researchers to collaborate in this study to provide a better understanding of issues in qualitative research in the same research context. They discuss the challenges of interviewing participants within the educational context. They also suggest some ways to overcome such challenges.Design/methodology/approachBased on Foucualt's writings on regimes of truth, discourse and systems of exclusion, the authors in this study …
Open-air Conservation of Ruins and the Concept of “Non-Dislocation”
2012
Most of the on-going debate is about “how” to protect archaeological ruins, whilst at the same time allowing the general public to enjoy them. Today it is clear how important it is, from the actual planning stages of excavations, to interact with experts from other disciplines, who are working on their own findings and offering them up for collective enjoyment. Whatever might be feasible for an indoor museum is not always feasible with an architectonic ruin, as regards both presenting objects with explicative apparatus that determines their significance, and exploring them in a new way when interpretations change or new ideologies are introduced. First of all, conserving excavations is the …

Lucullus en «clair-obscur»: mérites et extravagances d’un citoyen de la Rome républicaine durant l’époque impériale
2013
International audience; One of the most interesting figures of Roman history with respect to the construction of historical memory is L. Licinius Lucullus. Although remarkable for his military success and appreciated for his generosity towards the inhabitants of the provinces subject to the Romans, which dedicated to him some inscriptions that are monumenta in his memory, his tendency to excess and extravagance was significantly recorded in certain literary sources producing a distinctly chiaroscuro portrait. The evaluation of his conduct seems contradictory already in Cicero who tends to denigrate Lucullus in some harangues for his rapacity but later praises his military success when conve…
