Designing a mobile app for museums according to the drivers of visitor satisfaction

2013

The aim of this study is to identify the key factors as antecedents of visitor satisfaction for the design of a mobile app for museums. To our aim we use the Kano model that allows to categorize service attributes according to how they are perceived by customers and to estimate their impact on customer satisfaction. We collected qualitative data trough 300 questionnaires administered to tourists visiting the Sicilian cities of Palermo and Trapani over a period of 3 months (October- December 2012). The results of our analysis can be relevant for museum and public managers to plan strategic and operative activities, for researcher in the field of touristic marketing, for application developer…

The temple of visual culture and people with visual impairments: museum accessibility as mental colonization

Accessibility raises political and cultural questions about inclusion and inclusive practices. Museums worldwide now offer multisensory access programs for people with visual impairments, which could appear as an actual implementation of the purpose of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of full inclusion and respect of disabled pleople as part of human diversity. However, by focusing on touch, they often passively exclude people with visual impairments because of their foundation in ocularcentric assumptions about knowledge, misconceptions about visual impairments, and aesthetic and epistemological potential of other 'senses'. Differently, approaches deeply aware of s…

Crowdsourcing Cultural Heritage: From 3D Modeling to the Engagement of Young Generations

2016

Monitoring, digitizing and archiving museum artworks represent an important socio-cultural accomplishment and an overcoming in digital preservation today. Cultural heritage is constantly under threat of terrorist attacks and natural disaster. The high costs related to documentation task have prevented a constantly and massive survey activity. The low cost 3D image based acquisition and elaboration techniques of an object, allow to carry out a 3D photorealistic model in a short time. Therefore, a lot of museum adopted these techniques for the artworks archiving. Crowdsourcing activities can significantly speed up survey and elaboration procedures. If, on the one hand, these initiatives can h…

Museums: new icons of the Digital Age

2014

Museum is much more than a place for preserving artifacts and objects. Indeed, throughout history, the museums, flexible and adaptive places, have been designed as social aggregators, to house objects and collections in which community could identify. They have always represented powerful means of communication through their ability to convey knowledge and to involve its audience (tourists and local residents). For over half a century, museums have become an important design topic, accompanied by a sharp increase in the creation of new architectural formal configurations. Also the role of museum has been changing: museum is not only a place for exhibiting, also the container itself has beco…

New technology for archaeological museums: three case studies on the Mediterranean coast

2013

The archaeology/technology combination has long been accepted with the second being seen to be at the service of the study and conservation of the first. Much less immediate and recent is the combination between the archaeological museum and technology for communication. Certainly, becauseof its ability to express dynamic and immediate information, new technology, if well integrated in the exhibition and well calibrated with the presence of original objects, can be a very effective support to the public’s appreciation. The paper aims to provide some examples that seem to adequately describe good integration practices between the authentic and the mediated, between the original and the virtu…

The Museum of London, a City Museum as Narrative Exhibition

2014

From temples of sacred objects to repositories of colonial trophies and from monuments of civility to spaces for self-expression, the shape and the appeal of museums through history has been fashioned to hold particular collections of objects. Moreover the museums have been also designed to adapt to particular display techniques appropriate for a particular collection. In the last century, a period of structural reinvention in the design and shaping of the exhibitions, the museum making is challenging, creative, and complex. The ‘new museum making’ includes emotive exhibitions within communicative buildings in order to create ‘narrative experiences’ which integrate objects, spaces, and audi…

Visually low-impacting methods for the measurement of parameters related to IAQ risk indicators in exhibition halls

2021

Microclimate for cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in the degradation process of artefacts exhibited in museums. Generally, the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring inside museums is based on conventional measurements of thermo-hygrometry parameters and longtime averaged measurements of atmospheric pollutants’ concentration. Unfortunately, all these approaches require electric supply and are usually characterized by a noticeable visual impact on the exhibition space, which clearly negatively affects the visitors’ experience. This paper intends to revisit and discuss a methodology (and its test application on field, to estimate the risk of damage of three artefacts displayed in an ol…

¿Qué esperan los museos de los maestros?

2009
