Context-dependent neuroelectric responses during motor control
2015
Abstract Research on brain responses during motor control is usually performed under typical laboratory settings. However, everyday life and the laboratory differ in many aspects, such as purposeful and motivated behavior; and there's no awareness of “being measured” in everyday life. In the laboratory, movements are usually explicitly instructed, overtly measured and follow no intrinsic motivated purpose. Therefore, here we present a new method to measure and reliably analyze neuroelectric brain responses by EEG, as well as kinematics during the performance of grasping movements in two different behavioral contexts. One context (L) simulates a typical laboratory task and another context (E…
Relationship between mothers' enjoyment and sedentary behavior and physical activity of mother-child dyads using a movement-to-music video program : …
2020
Background: Parental support and participation in physical activity (PA) with children and parents' acting as a role model for less sedentary behaviors (SB) are critical factors for children's healthier lifestyle. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between mothers' enjoyment and participants' sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) as a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using data from Moving Sound RCT in the Pirkanmaa area of Finland. Methods: The participants were 108 mother-child dyads (child age 5-7 years) who completed the eight-week exercise intervention using a movement-to-music video program in their homes. Mothers' enjoyment w…
Interbrain emotional connection during music performances is driven by physical proximity and individual traits.
2021
How musical emotions and the pleasure derived from music, regardless of the musical valence, can be shared between individuals is a fascinating question, and investigating it can shed light on the function of musical reward. We carried out our investigations in a natural setting during an international competition for orchestra conductors. Participants (n = 15) used a dedicated smartphone app to report their subjective emotional experiences in real time while we recorded their cerebral activity using electroencephalography and their electrodermal activity. The overall behavioral real-time behavioral ratings suggest a possible social influence on the reported and felt pleasure. The physicall…
Individuality of movements in music--finger and body movements during playing of the flute.
2013
The achievement of mastery in playing a composition by means of a musical instrument typically requires numerous repetitions and corrections according to the keys and notations of the music piece. Nevertheless, differences in the interpretation of the same music piece by highly skilled musicians seem to be recognizable. The present study investigated differences within and between skilled flute players in their finger and body movements playing the same piece several times on the same and on different days. Six semiprofessional and four professional musicians played an excerpt of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 several times on three different days. Finger and body movements were recorded by …
Muscular synergies during motor corrections: investigation of the latencies of muscle activities.
2010
To reduce the complexity of muscular control, a small number of muscular activations are combined to produce an infinity of movements. This concept of muscle synergies has been widely investigated, mainly by means of principal component analyses (PCA) in the case of unperturbed movements. However, reaching movements can be altered at any time if the target location is changed during their execution. In this case, PCA does not precisely measure the latencies of muscles activities. We develop here a simple method to investigate how a random target jump toward a single location induced motor corrections in the whole musculature by precisely determining the latencies of muscle activities during…
Rationale and methods for a randomized controlled trial of a movement-to-music video program for decreasing sedentary time among mother-child pairs
2015
Measured objectively, under a quarter of adults and fewer than half of preschool children meet the criteria set in the aerobic physical activity recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Moreover, adults reportedly are sedentary (seated or lying down) for most of their waking hours. Importantly, greater amounts of sedentary time on parents’ part are associated with an increased risk of more sedentary time among their children. A randomized controlled trial targeting mother-child pairs has been designed, to examine whether a movement-to-music video program may be effective in reducing sedentary time and increasing physical activity in the home environment. Mother-chi…
Factor analysis and reliability of the Movement Imagery Questionnaire.
1994
The purpose of this work was to analyze the factor structure, estimate reliability of the Movement Imagery Questionnaire of Hall and Pongrac, and examine differences between men and women on factor scores. The results for 63 men and 47 women supported the bifactorial structure and reliability of this self-report and its adequacy in comparisons of visual and kinesthetic imagery scores.
Psychophysiological differentiation of deception: the effects of electrodermal lability and mode of responding on skin conductance and heart rate
2001
The differentiation-of-deception paradigm enables the examination of deception as a psychophysiological process by varying, within subjects, two conditions which differ only with respect to honesty and deception. The present experiment assessed the effects of two group factors - electrodermal lability and mode of responding - on the deception phenomenon in a situation with low emotional involvement and mental load. Skin conductance responses, phasic heart rate, self-rated relaxation, calmness, and concentration were the dependent variables. Twenty questions referring to general knowledge were presented on a monitor. The 88 male participants answered half of the questions deceptively and the…
Modulation of input–output curves by low and high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex
2002
Objectives: Exploring the modulatory effects of different frequencies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the excitability of the motor cortex as measured by the input-output curve technique (I-O curve). Methods: Sixteen healthy subjects participated in this experiment. On two different sessions, conducted 1 week apart, rTMS was applied either at a frequency of 20 or 1Hz at 90% of individual motor threshold (MT) for a total of 1600 pulses each. Before and after rTMS, the cortical excitability was assessed by measuring MT and the size of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) collected at different intensities of stimulation. Results: The analysis on the whole population showed…
The effect of improvisational music therapy on the treatment of depression: protocol for a randomised controlled trial
2008
Abstract Background Music therapy is frequently offered to individuals suffering from depression. Despite the lack of research into the effects of music therapy on this population, anecdotal evidence suggests that the results are rather promising. The aim of this study is to examine whether improvisational, psychodynamically orientated music therapy in an individual setting helps reduce symptoms of depression and improve other health-related outcomes. In particular, attention will be given to mediator agents, such as musical expression and interaction in the sessions, as well as to the explanatory potential of EEG recordings in investigating emotion related music perception of individuals w…
