Lines of development in social research on disability in Finland between the years 1970–2010
2013
This article reviews the development of social research on disability conducted in Finland during the 40-year period from 1970 until 2010. The main focus is the connection of the research with the socioeconomic development of the country. The review starts from the emergence of a new disability service paradigm during the late 1960s. This new paradigm centred around the concept of rehabilitation, and had its roots in the birth of a postmodern welfare state during the same decade. The second shift began during the 1980s and was characterized by the precedence of human rights issues. Both of these changes paralleled international developments, but equally had their roots in the Finnish post-w…

Between looking back and moving ahead : an exploration of the role of the body and its movement in a music therapy case study
2017
We exist in this world through our bodies. Every single experience is stored in it, it helps us to communicate with others, relate and build meaningful relationships. However, when the connection to our experiences or the control over our body is disrupted by a traumatic experience or disease, we become disconnected from our genuine self and the world around us. Music therapy provides us with a space for integration – of painful or joyful memories, emotions, and our bodies. Especially in Western cultures this physical relationship to music is often neglected, even though music and dance probably developed simultaneously and are still very much the same in some African cultures. When we are …

Exploring reverie : an exploratory inquiry into the instances of reverie and their occurrences within a particular music therapy case study and its i…
2016
One of the main concepts within psychoanalysis is that there are three levels of consciousness: the unconscious, the preconscious and the conscious. The aim of this work is to discuss and analyze a process which deals with all three of these states of consciousness on different levels, called “reverie”, as experienced within the music therapy setting. This thesis initially looks at what has been said so far about reverie, and the goal of this work is to describe the possibility of thinking back retrospectively to moments in music therapy which when experienced can seem hazy and blurry, “dream-like”. The research will be conducted through a qualitative analysis of data collected during 18 mu…
YIZKEREM. May Our Lord Remember Them (from Hebrew), for acappella mixed choir
2021
