The Semantics of Musical Topoi : An Empirical Approach
2015
THE ARTICLE INTRODUCES AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH to studying music’s extrinsic meanings, based on the idea of musical topos as a set of musical entities that is delimited and furnished with meaning by extramusical associations in a listener population. The proposed methodology involves free, associative responses as well as responses on semantic variables addressing the imagery. After deriving potential topical structures for a given musical domain from the quantitative results, the structures are substantiated by using them to guide a rule-based, qualitative analysis of the free responses. The approach allows a view to the topical organization of a musical domain in which the identity of each …
2023
Some important territories in Central countries have been offering high-value musical activities to their residents for the last two decades, which also attract visitors and therefore generate tourism. In order to address the conceptualization of musical tourism as a general objective, the thesis conducts an in-depth review of the literature and proposes an initial social, economic, and territorial analysis of music and its international evolution, as well as in Spain, where tourism activity constitutes a possible higher evolution for music and requires a local network with coordination relationships between public and private agents. However, there is little empirical evidence and academic…
Studying incidental news : Antecedents, dynamics and implications
2020
In light of concerns about decreasing news use, a decline in interest in political news or even active avoidance or resistance of news in general, the idea of ‘incidental news’ has been seen as a possible remedy. Generally, ‘incidental news’ refers to the ways in which people encounter information about current events through media when they were not actively seeking the news. However, scholars studying incidental news through different theoretical and methodological perspectives have been arriving at differing evaluations of the significance and implications of this phenomenon – to the extent of downright contradictory findings. This introductory piece posits the aim of this special issue…
Choosing to listen : how personality is connected to the listening and use of self-chosen music in everyday life
2013
Vastanneet koostuivat Jyväskylän yliopiston Humanistisen tiedekunnan opiskelijoista. Online-kysely koostui useasta osasta: Persoonallisuustestistä (BFI; John & Srivastava, 1999), sekä osioista, joissa käsiteltiin musiikin kuunteluun liittyviä funktioita ja tilanteita. Lisäksi selvitettiin vastanneiden musiikillista kokemusta ja musiikin viikkokuuntelumääriä. Kerä…
Music therapy for improving premature infants' well-being and communication skills and enhancing mother-infant bonding : a case study
2016
Over the last few decades, mother-child attachment has received increasing attention in early intervention with prematurely born infants. In these early years, physical interactions constitute a crucial arena for early learning and brain development, and together with the strong emotional bonding between the mother and her infant, they build the foundation for later interaction relationships. Premature birth is a challenging experience for the mother-infant relationship and is always a risk factor in early interaction issues (long hospital stay, lack of physical closeness etc.). This case study aims to examine how music therapy can promote premature infant's well-being and encourage the cre…
Finnish Classroom Teacher Students' Experiences of an Online Music Course During The COVID pandemic
2022
When studying music, skills are often practised with a teacher, face-to-face, in a classroom. What are the experiences of classroom teacher trainees when music teaching becomes asynchronous, i.e., an individually completed online course? This question, among other things, was explored at a Finnish University's Teacher Education Department in autumn 2020, resulting in the production of a two-credit online music course on the Moodle learning environment. It was implemented for the first time during the summer term in 2021. The students’ experiences with the functionality of the e-learning module were analysed through data-driven content analysis. The study represents an intensive case study u…
