Musical Self-Concept - Presentation of a Multi-Dimensional Model and Its Empirical Analyses

2009

Research on the specific domain of musical self-concept was so far exclusively concerned with musically active subjects (such as performers, music teachers, students, or singing children). In contrast, the starting base of the presented research is that music is a distinct aspect in everyone’s life and personality and that therefore musical self-concept is general and includes a number of domain besides achievement. The presented multi-dimensional model includes (i) non-academic and (ii) dimensions of musical ability. The first section entails representations with regards to “who I am” in music, such as emotional, social, physical, cognitive and spiritual notions, while section two addresse…

Verification and Validation of the Musical Self-Concept Inquiry (MUSCI) to Measure ’Musical Self-Concept’ of German Students at Secondary Education S…

2016

Musical development can be very differently during adolescence and the mechanisms and reasons, which lead to these differences, are often objects of music educational research. To measure the aspects of musical development of German students, the psychometric construct ‘musical self-concept’ can be used. So the first aim of this study was to verify the factor structure of the initial MUSCI-questionnaire to measure ‘musical self-concept’ of German students. The second aim was to re-specify the underlying factor model as well as to validate the renewed sub-facets of the questionnaire with musicspecific background variables (e. g. interest in ‘music’) as well as the construct ‘musical sophisti…

Embodiment of Love in Handel's Opera Giulio Cesare

2013

By studying metaphors of love in Handel´s opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto, I will introduce how it is depicted by the protagonists´ arias; via Cleopatra´s and Caesar´s musical relations, as a prevailing message. The atmospheric tone paintings set to the musical highlights of the protagonist arias answer the questions: how is love defined in Giulio Cesare? What kind of musical signs of love are there to be found and what will they tell us? Love is an essential theme in the work because the arias` foci are interlocked by the affectual tensions. These have encouraged various performance views of the work, for instance: ENO´s “epoch” depiction in 1984; Sellar´s “satirical” version in 1990; and Gl…

Evaluating the Consonance and Pleasantness of Triads in Different Musical Context

2013

This study examines whether the consonance and pleasantness of triads (major, minor, augmented, and diminished) varies according to the musical context in which it is presented. The level of consonance and dissonance (C/D) of each chord when they were played alone without any musical contexts was judged. Following this, each chord was accommodated in a different position in a short cadence, and the level of C/D for each chord was judged. Additionally, the C/D and the pleasantness and unpleasantness (P/U) of the whole sequence were rated on a 7-point scale. The results show that, for major and minor triads, there was no significant difference in C/D levels between the ‘without musical contex…

Effects of coaching on generalist primary music teachers´ classroom practice and their `musical self-concept´

2016

The majority of music lessons in primary schools are covered by generalist primary music teachers, usually with little or no training in teaching it. This practice-based research project is part a PhD program to professionalize generalist music teachers in primary schools to teach music lessons. The aim of this study was to describe changes in the generalist primary music teachers´ didactic classroom practices in teaching music. Moreover, this study aimed to analyze the generalist primary music teachers´ development of their `musical self-concept` (Spychiger, 2010). This longitudinal intervention study is qualitative in character. Participants were 8 generalist primary music teachers and 4 …

La dimension musicale des textes des troubadours

2016

2016

The life and career of Sixto Rodríguez, the American folk-singer born in Detroit in 1942, weave together two different places. On the one hand, we find Detroit where at the turn of the Sixties Rodríguez recorded two albums without success. On the other, there is Cape Town where unknown to Rodríguez his music became very influential and its subversive contents found an unexpected space of resonance. This paper aims at investigating the double geography emerging from this astonishing musical biography. The analysis will focus on the complex relationship between musical practices and spatial formations, examining how power geometries shape and carve the field of their mutual production. If the…
