Studies on the determinants of migration and the spatial concentration of labour
2003
This thesis consists of five empirical studies which seek to understand the processes behind interregional migration decisions and the spatial concentration of labour. The empirical studies are preceded by an introductory chapter that, among other topics, discusses spatial concentration in Finland between 1980 and 2000, and surveys prior evidence on the determinants of migration. The thesis mainly utilises Finnish longitudinal population census data from 1993?1996. A variety of advanced microeconometric methods are used in the modelling of the migration phenomenon to ensure robustness and the reliability of the results. The results of the thesis imply that person-specific productivity has h…

Job Displacement, Inter-Regional Mobility and Long-Term Earnings
2018
We examine the effect of job displacement on regional mobility using linked employer-employee panel data for the 1995-2014 period. We also study whether displaced movers obtain earnings and employment gains compared to displaced stayers. The results show that job displacement increases the migration probability by ~70%. However, social capital in a region and housing characteristics decrease the propensity to move, indicating that people do not make the migration decisions solely based on short-term economic incentives. Migration has an immediate negative relationship with earnings, but the link diminishes as time passes and eventually turns positive for men. The link between migration and …
Intra-EU Mobility: The Employment and Welfare Experience of Temporary EU Workers in the United Kingdom
2021
This article explores the mobility pathways of temporary EU workers and the implications that transnational temporary mobility has on their labor market outcomes and access to social rights and benefits. The experiences of temporary EU migrants working in the UK show that despite the narrative of the borderlessness of the common European labor market, access to host countries’ labor market and welfare is shaped by their employment status and welfare eligibility criteria that produce worker precariousness. Temporary EU workers’ experiences are characterized by employment insecurity and unequal access to labor and social rights, effects which might increase since the UK has left the EU.
Posting and agency work in British construction and hospitality: the role of regulation in differentiating the experiences of migrants

Työttömyys kirvoittaa muuttokaravaanit liikkeelle
2021
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan työmarkkinoiden joustavuuteen ja työvoiman liikkuvuuteen vaikuttavia taustatekijöitä Suomessa. Tutkimustulokset perustuvat Tilastokeskuksen kansallisesti edustavaan rekisteriaineistoon. Tulokset osoittavat, että työpaikan menettäminen kasvattaa merkittävästi (noin 50 prosenttia) muuttamisen todennäköisyyttä. Toisaalta osa työttömistä jää asumaan korkean työttömyyden alueille. Asuntojen korkeat hinnat ja toisaalta asuntomarkkinoiden heikko likviditeetti heikentävät muuttovirtoja ja työmarkkinoiden sopeutumista kohti matalamman työttömyyden tasapainoa. nonPeerReviewed

Maaseutuväestön matkat muualle
2021
Do they stay or go? Analysis of international students in Finland
2021
The increase in international student mobility raises questions of how many international students choose to stay in their host country and the reasons why some stay and others leave. This study examines factors affecting international students to stay in Finland three years after graduation. Tracking 13 (years) graduating cohorts across national (Finland) data registries, we find family ties and labour market opportunities relate to an increased probability an international student stays in Finland three years after graduation. peerReviewed
