Molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis in Sicily, Italy: what has changed after a decade?

Background We aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) isolates in the province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, by characterizing 183 isolates identified in the years 2004-2012. A comparison with 104 MTBC strains identified in the same geographic area in the years 1994-2000 was also carried out. Background The PD-1 axis is a cell intrinsic immunoregulatory pathway that mediates T cell exhaustion in chronic infection particularly in some viral infections. Granzyme A as a potential biomarker of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and disease

Cytotoxic molecules such as granulysin, perforin and granzymes produced by cytolytic T cells directly contribute to immune defense against tuberculosis (TB). Prevention and early detection of tuberculosis

1,570 subjects with known TB contacts (active TB, old TB and primary infection) and individuals with no known contacts but belonging to 'defined TB risk groups' were screened at the Department of Tuberculosis Prevention at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia. The total infection rate was 40.13% and active TBC was diagnosed in 2.23% of the population screened. Infection and disease rates were significant in all the groups examined, showing the need for correct screening not only for active TB contacts but also for child primary infection contacts, old TB cases not previously screened and subjects with no known contacts but belonging to a 'TB risk group'.

Tuberculous aortitis in an human immunodeficiency virus-positive Ivorian migrant: A case report.

We report an unusual case of a 35-year-old Ivorian migrant with an abdominal mass and medical history relevant for human immunodeficiency virus-2 positivity with a CD4/CD8 ratio of 0.63; Mantoux and lymphocyte stimulation tests (QuantiFERON) were positive. 3D-CT images revealed a voluminous non-homogeneous retroperitoneal mass in the right abdominal region presenting no significant contrast impregnation. Thoraco-abdominal aorta presented diffuse-altered morphology with multiple ectasias throughout its course and an aneurysm at the level of the subrenal tract. The patient underwent vascular surgery. Missed opportunities for tuberculosis investigation in a municipal hospital in Ghana: evidence from patient exit interviews

Abstract Background We assessed coverage of symptom screening and sputum testing for tuberculosis (TB) in hospital outpatient clinics in Ghana. Methods In a cross-sectional study, we enrolled adults (≥18 years) exiting the clinics reporting ≥1 TB symptom (cough, fever, night sweats or weight loss).
