Semi-automated retinal vessel analysis in nonmydriatic fundus photography.

2013

Purpose Funduscopic assessment of the retinal vessels may be used to assess the health status of microcirculation and as a component in the evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors. Typically, the evaluation is restricted to morphological appreciation without strict quantification. Our purpose was to develop and validate a software tool for semi-automated quantitative analysis of retinal vasculature in nonmydriatic fundus photography. Methods matlab software was used to develop a semi-automated image recognition and analysis tool for the determination of the arterial–venous (A/V) ratio in the central vessel equivalent on 45° digital fundus photographs. Validity and reproducibility of the r…

Pharmacologic pupil dilation as a predictive test for the risk for intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome.

2011

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists (α1-ARAs) on pupil diameter and determine whether the diameter predicts intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome (IFIS). SETTING: Ophthalmology Section, Palermo University, Palermo, Italy. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Male outpatients taking tamsulosin, α(1)-ARAs, or no α(1)-ARAs having phacoemulsification were recruited. Pupils were measured 1 month preoperatively, immediately preoperatively, and postoperatively under mesopic low (0.4 lux) and high (4.0 lux) illumination after pharmacologic dilation. The IFIS severity was graded. RESULTS: Each group comprised 50 patients. Pharmacologic dilation in both α(1)-ARA …

Effect of phenylephrine on static and dynamic accommodation

2018

Purpose We tested the hypothesis that changes in accommodation after instillation of Phenylephrine Hydrochloride (PHCl) observed in some studies could be caused by changes in optics. Methods We performed two experiments to test the effects of PHCl on static and on dynamic accommodation in 8 and 6 subjects, respectively. Objective wavefront measurements were recorded of the static accommodation response to a stimulus at different distances or dynamic accommodation response to a sinusoidally moving stimulus (between 1 and 3 D of accommodative demand at 0.2 Hz). The responses were characterized using two methods: one that takes into account the mydriatic optical effects on the accommodation pr…

The efficacy and safety of unfixed and fixed combinations of latanoprost and other antiglaucoma medications.

2002

Adjunctive therapy for the management of glaucoma is commonly used. Unfixed combinations of the prostaglandin analog latanoprost and other glaucoma medications have been demonstrated to effectively lower intraocular pressure (IOP). The range of reported additional reductions in IOP compared to a monotherapy baseline are as follows: latanoprost-timolol (13-37%), latanoprost-pilocarpine 2% (7-14%), latanoprost and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (15-24.1%), and latanoprost and dipivefrin (15-28%). There is a fixed combination of latanoprost (0.005%) and timolol (0.5%) that has been investigated in Phase III trials in Europe and the United States. In these trials, it was noted that the efficacy …

Uveal effusion syndrome complicated by anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

1995

We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless it can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment. © 1996, Kluwer Academic Publishers. Comparison of partial coherence interferometry and ultrasound for anterior segment biometry.

2008

To assess the performance of a partial coherence interferometry (PCI)-based device for the determination of anterior segment biometry.Clinica Centrofama, Cartagena, Murcia, Spain.Central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness (LT) were measured with the ACMaster PCI anterior segment biometer and an Echoscan US-1800 ultrasound (US) biometer/pachymeter with and without cycloplegia. To determine the precision of the instruments, the same examiner took 30 consecutive CCT, ACD, and LT measurements in a single subject under the same conditions and with and without cycloplegia. The same measurements were performed in additional subjects.Twenty-one eyes (16 subjec…
