The impact of Syme amputation in surgical treatment of patients with diabetic foot syndrome and Charcot-neuro-osteoarthropathy

Charcot-neuro-osteoarthropathy with its severe destruction of bones remains a challenge for physicians and surgeons. The aim of the study was to characterise a patient population treated in a specialised foot care centre who underwent surgical treatment for their diabetic foot syndrome. Special attention was paid to patients who suffered from Charcot-neuro-osteoarthropathy and the impact of Syme amputation if amputation of the foot was inevitable. Clinicopathologic conference: Multiquadrant expansile fibro-osseous lesion in a juvenile

This paper intends to present clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of a case of gigantiform cementoma manifesting in a 14-year-old boy, without any familial involvement. He has been followed for 3 years. Further cases from the literature have been reviewed that confirm a similar clinicopathologic picture. This is the first case report that describes "non-familial gigantiform cementoma" after the World Health Organisation's classification of 2005.

Abstract Apoptosis of oligodendrocytes (ODCs), the myelin-producing glial cells in the CNS, plays a central role in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis. To investigate the mechanism behind ODC apoptosis in EAE, we made use of conditional knockout mice lacking the adaptor protein FADD specifically in ODCs (FADDODC-KO). Transcription factor NRF2 as a therapeutic target for chronic diseases: a systems medicine approach

Systems medicine has a mechanism-based rather than a symptom- or organ-based approach to disease and identifies therapeutic targets in a nonhypothesis-driven manner. In this work, we apply this to transcription factor nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (NRF2) by cross-validating its position in a protein-protein interaction network (the NRF2 interactome) functionally linked to cytoprotection in low-grade stress, chronic inflammation, metabolic alterations, and reactive oxygen species formation.
