The natural history of Echinorhynchus bothniensis Zdzitowiecki and Valtonen, 1987 (Acanthocephala) in a high Arctic lake

2015

The acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus bothniensis Zdzitowiecki and Valtonen, 1987 differs from most other species in the genus Echinorhynchus Zoega in Müller, 1776 by infecting mysids (order Mysida) instead of amphipods (order Amphipoda) as intermediate hosts. Here we report on the occurrence of E. bothniensis in mysids (Mysis segerstralei Audzijonytė et Väinölä) and in its fish definitive hosts in a high Arctic lake. Out of 15907 sampled mysids, 4.8% were infected with a mean intensity of 1.05 worms (range 1–5), although there was notable variation between samples taken in different years and sites. Larger mysids appear more likely to be infected. Of five fish species sampled, charr,Salvelinu…

Introduction of Mysis relicta (Mysida) reduces niche segregation between deep-water Arctic charr morphs

2019

This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Hydrobiologia. The final authenticated version is available online at https://doi.org/10.1007/s10750-019-3953-4. Niche diversification of polymorphic Arctic charr can be altered by multiple anthropogenic stressors. The opossum-shrimp (Mysis relicta) was introduced to compensate for reduced food resources for fish following hydropower operations in Lake Limingen, central Norway. Based on habitat use, stomach contents, stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) and trophically transmitted parasites, the zooplanktivorous upper water-column dwelling ‘normal’ morph was clearly trophically separated from two sympatric deep-water morphs…

Comparison of sampling methods for semipelagic animals in two deep basins of Lake Saimaa

1996

The efficiency of different methods for sampling semipelagic animals was compared in the deep basins of Lake Paasivesi and Lake Puruvesi of the complex Lake Saimaa, Finland, during 1990–92. Certain semipelagic animals, such as Mysis relicta, amphipods and larvae of Chaoborus flavicans, are important bioindicators of water and benthic quality. However, owing to their high mobility and vertical migrations they are difficult to sample quantitatively with traditional benthic methods.

Taxonomic identity and phytoplankton diet affect fatty acid composition of zooplankton in large lakes with differing dissolved organic carbon concent…

2015

An increase in loading of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from terrestrial to freshwater ecosystems has recently been documented in several boreal regions. We studied how transfer of important biomolecules, fatty acids, may be connected to DOC in pelagic food webs of large boreal lakes. We collected nine zooplankton taxa during three seasons from six lakes along a gradient of DOC (5–10 mg C L−1). Taxonomic identity explained 62% of the variation in zooplankton fatty acids, while the effects of DOC and season were less pronounced. This suggests that the community composition of zooplankton is important in determining the quality of food available for higher trophic level consumers. Seasonal d…

Ultrastructure, development, and moulting of the aesthetascs of Neomysis integer and Idotea baltica (Crustacea, Malacostraca)

1983

The development of the aesthetascs of Neomysis integer (Malacostraca, Mysidacea) and Idotea baltica (Malacostraca, Isopoda) were investigated by electron microscope methods. Basically the aesthetascs of both species develop according to the same pattern. The newly formed sensillar shafts lie invaginated within the epidermal tissue. They are formed by numerous enveloping cells, which are arranged telescopically one by one. Each enveloping cell secretes a definite portion of the new shaft cuticle. The innermost enveloping cell extends furthest distally and deposits the cuticle of the future shaft tip. The outer enveloping cells produce the cuticle of the more proximal shaft portions. Whereas …

Potential predation pressure of littoral mysids on herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) eggs and yolk-sac larvae

2008

The predation potential of littoral mysid shrimps (Mysidacea) on Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) eggs and yolk-sac larvae was studied experimentally. The results showed that littoral mysids feed actively on both eggs and yolk-sac larvae. It was shown that Neomysis integer preys on eggs, which are not attached to the substrate. Alternative food (yolk-sac larvae or zooplankton) did not decrease feeding rate on eggs. Only gravel as a bottom material lowered the ingestion rate to nearly zero. The largest of the mysid species Praunus flexuosus ate yolk-sac larvae more than other mysids and most efficiently. Mysids switched to feed on eggs when larvae and eggs were offered simultaneou…

Molecular systematics in the acanthocephalan genus Echinorhynchus (sensu lato) in northern Europe

1994

SUMMARYNew biological species and high levels of inter- and intraspecific genetic divergence were discovered in an allozyme study of some North European members of the acanthocephalan genus Echinorhynchus (sensu lato), parasites of fish and malacostracan crustaceans. (i) A strong differentiation between the marine E. gadi and the fresh- and brackish-water E. salmonis (genetic identity I ≃ 0) supports a generic distinction between these taxa; however, the subdivision would not entirely concur with the concepts of Echinorhynchus (sensu stricto) and Metechinorhynchus suggested earlier. (ii) Samples of E. gadi from the Baltic, Norwegian and North Seas included three distinct, partially sympatri…
