Oxygen uptake, acid-base balance and hormonal responses in maximal 300 - 400 m running in child, adolescent and adult athletes
2013
Vilmi, Nikke (2013). Oxygen uptake, acid-base balance and hormonal responses in maximal 300 - 400 m running in child, adolescent and adult athletes. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Master's thesis, Science of Sport Coaching and Fitness Testing, 55 pp. The 400 m sprint demands both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. During the race the acid-base balance of the body is disturbed and that has effects on the oxygen uptake. The purpose of this study was to investigate the oxygen uptake and acid-base balance during and after the maximal anaerobic running test in child (300 m), adolescent (350 m) and adult (400 m) athletes. Furthermore, the aim was also to d…
Ski economy and physiological responses while double poling : curved vs. straight poles
2015
Christina Mishica (2015). Ski economy and physiological responses while double poling: curved vs. straight poles. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Master’s Thesis in Exercise Physiology. 57 pp. Introduction. Double poling (DP) is commonly used in cross country skiing (XC). It is becoming more and more popular and in some competitions it is the exclusive technique. Ski poles allow a skier to apply power and force to the snow and their composition and design have a significant effect on performance. Different pole lengths and cross sections are some of the differences that have been tested. Advancements in equipment will continue to be introduced so it is i…

Soil inoculation with symbiotic microorganisms promotes plant growth and nutrient transporter genes expression in durum wheat
2015
In a field experiment conducted in a Mediterranean area of inner Sicily, durum wheat was inoculated with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), or with both to evaluate their effects on nutrient uptake, plant growth, and the expression of key transporter genes involved in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake. These biotic associations were studied under either low N availability (unfertilized plots) and supplying the soil with an easily mineralizable organic fertilizer. Regardless of N fertilization, at the tillering stage, inoculation with AMF alone or in combination with PGPR increased the aboveground biomass yield compared to the uninocula…
Polyester microplastic fibers in soil increase nitrogen loss via leaching and decrease plant biomass production and N uptake
2022
Abstract Microplastic contamination, like other global change factors, can induce effects on ecosystem functions and processes, affecting various soil biophysical properties. However, effects of such contaminants on nutrient cycles in agroecosystems are still poorly understood. We here performed two pot experiments to investigate the effect of polyester microplastic fibers (PMFs) on soil physical properties, nitrogen cycle, and plant performance in a maize-based agroecosystem. Moreover, we followed the N loss via leaching in soil contaminated or not with PMFs by simulating heavy rainfall events that mimic a future scenario of climate change. Our results show that soil contaminated with PMFs…
Cardiorespiratory Fitness and the Risk of Serious Ventricular Arrhythmias: A Prospective Cohort Study.
2019
Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease outcomes. However, the relationship of CRF with risk of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) is unknown. We aimed to assess the prospective association of CRF with the risk of serious VAs. Cardiorespiratory fitness, as measured by maximal oxygen uptake, was assessed using a respiratory gas exchange analyzer in 2299 middle-aged men in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease prospective cohort. We corrected for within-person variability in CRF levels using data from repeated measurements 11 years apart. During median follow-up of 25.3 years (interquartile range, 18.7-27.2 years), 73 serious VAs were recorded. The age-…
Surrogate Modelling for Oxygen Uptake Prediction Using LSTM Neural Network
2023
Oxygen uptake (V˙O2) is an important metric in any exercise test including walking and running. It can be measured using portable spirometers or metabolic analyzers. Those devices are, however, not suitable for constant use by consumers due to their costs, difficulty of operation and their intervening in the physical integrity of their users. Therefore, it is important to develop approaches for the indirect estimation of V˙O2-based measurements of motion parameters, heart rate data and application-specific measurements from consumer-grade sensors. Typically, these approaches are based on linear regression models or neural networks. This study investigates how motion data contribute to V˙O2 …

Performance-related physiological changes induced by one year of endurance training in young athletes
2023
IntroductionAlthough maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is generally recognized as the single best indicator of aerobic fitness in youth, interpretation of this parameter and the extent to which it can be improved by training remain controversial, as does the relative importance of VO2max for performance in comparison to other factors such as power production. Here, we examined the influence of endurance training on the VO2max, muscle power and sports-related performance of cross-country skiers attending a school specializing in sports, as well as potential relationships between any changes observed to one another and/or to perceived stress scale (Cohen) and certain blood parameters.MethodsOn t…
Physical performance of Finnish futsal players, analysis of game intensity and fatigue in official futsal games
2017
Introduction. Futsal has grown notably in last years and have over 12 million players worldwide. Futsal is a high-intensity indoor sport where burst of multi-planar movements varies with short periods of rest. Futsal is played on a court sized 40 x 20 m for two halves of 20 min, where clock is stopped when ball is out of play. Purpose of this study was to find out physical performance of Finnish futsal players and analyse intensity and fatigue in official futsal games. Methods. Two Finnish Futsal League teams were involved (n = 19), age 26.3 (± 3.0 years), body mass 76.4 (± 6.2 kg), height 178.7 (± 5.7 cm), BMI 23.9 (± 1.4 kg/m2) and body fat % 12.3 (± 4.0 %). Measurement were done in the m…
