B subunits of cholera toxin and thermolabile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli have similar adjuvant effect as whole molecules on rotavirus 2/6-VLP spe…

2015

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adjuvant effect of the B subunits of cholera toxin (CT) and the thermolabile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli (LT) by the intrarectal route of immunization and compare them to the whole molecules CT and LT-R192G, a non toxic mutant of LT, using 2/6-VLP as an antigen, in mice. All molecules induced similar antigen specific antibody titers in serum and feces, whereas different T cell profiles were observed. CTB and LTB, conversely to CT and LT-R192G, did not induce detectable production of IL-2 by antigen specific T cells. Moreover, CTB, conversely to LT-R192G, CT and LTB, did not induce antigen specific CD4+CD25+Foxp3- and Foxp3+ T cells, thus sho…

Collisional shifting and broadening coefficients for the rovibrational anisotropic S(J) lines of nitrogen studied by inverse Raman spectroscopy

1996

0377-0486; Line shifting and broadening coefficients of the anisotropic S(J) lines (v = 0, J --> v = 1, J + 2) of the nitrogen molecule were measured at room temperature using high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy. A rotational quantum number dependence of the S(J) line shifts was observed. In order to avoid an asymmetry of experimental origin, a suitable theoretical profile was fitted to the experimental lineshapes. This study allows the testing of the theoretical methods for calculating the line broadening coefficients in anisotropic Raman scattering, which have already been used in the analysis of infrared absorption data. The behaviour of the modified sum rule and the RPA (rando…

High-Resolution Photoacoustic Raman-Spectroscopy of Gases

1992

0377-0486; A high-resolution photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy experiment is described. The resolution achieved by using two single-mode pulsed lasers is about 0.0054 cm-1 (full width at half maximum intensity). The experiment was tested first on the v1/2v2 bands of CO2 and gave an increase of at least about one order of magnitude in the signal-to-noise ratio with respect to stimulated Raman spectroscopy at low pressure (ca. 10 Torr almost-equal-to 13 kPa). The sensitivity is also demonstrated by the study of the weak hot band v1 + v2 - v2 of CO2. In both cases, the experimental line shape is well reproduced by taking into account Doppler and collisional effects. A comparison with CARS spect…

Rotational Relaxation of Nitrogen in Ternary Mixtures N2-CO2-H2O - Consequences in Coherent Anti-Stokes-Raman Spectroscopy Thermometry

1991

0021-9606; The influence of CO2 and H2O on the rotational relaxation processes of N2 in ternary mixtures N2-CO2-H2O is investigated. The efficiency of these perturbers is responsible for significant modifications of the state-to-state relaxation rates and broadening coefficients. Flame data are well reproduced by taking into account these modifications. The role of these minor species in the determination of temperatures in premixed flames is analyzed. The present relaxation model allows us to understand why the discrepancy between observed and calculated coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) spectra in flames is sometimes resolved by empirically adding a dephasing component to pur…

Determination of Temperature by Stimulated Raman Scattering of Molecular Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon-Dioxide

1993

0721-7269; We have determined the temperature from SRS spectra of N2-N2, N2-CO2, O2-O2, and CO2-CO2 recorded in wide pressure and temperature ranges. The fitting procedure takes simultaneously into account the Dicke effect and motional narrowing. We have quantified the accuracy of the MEG and ECS-P models for rotational relaxation. The temperature extracted from each model is compared with thermocouple measurements. The influence of vibrational broadening and shifting is discussed in detail.

Photocrosslinkable polyaspartamide/polylactide copolymer and its porous scaffolds for chondrocytes

2017

With the aim to produce, by a simple and reproducible technique, porous scaffolds potentially employable for tissue engineering purposes, in this work, we have synthesized a methacrylate (MA) copolymer of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) and polylactic acid (PLA). PHEA-PLA-MA has been dissolved in organic solvent at different concentrations in the presence of NaCl particles with different granulometry, and through UV irradiation and further salt leaching technique, various porous scaffolds have been prepared. Obtained samples have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy and their porosity has been evaluated as well as their degradation profile in aqueous medium in…

Stereoselective synthesis and transformation of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols

2021

A library of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols was synthesised in a stereoselective manner. Isopinocarveol prepared from (−)-α-pinene was converted into condensed oxazolidin-2-one in two steps by carbamate formation followed by a stereoselective aminohydroxylation process. The relative stereochemistry of the pinane-fused oxazolidin-2-one was determined by 2D NMR and X-ray spectroscopic techniques. The regioisomeric spiro-oxazolidin-2-one was prepared in a similar way starting from the commercially available (1R)-(−)-myrtenol (10). The reduction or alkaline hydrolysis of the oxazolidines, followed by reductive alkylation resulted in primary and secondary 2-amino-1,3-diols, which underwent a reg…

GALACTOSE-DECORATED POLYMERIC CARRIERS FOR HEPATOCYTE-SELECTIVE DRUG TARGETING

2015

In this paper, the current available strategies to realize galactose-decorated nanostructured polymeric systems are summarized. These carriers are designed in order to obtain targeted drug delivery to hepatocytes via galactose (GAL) moieties, i.e., for the treatment of viral hepatitis or liver cancer that are the greater causes of global disability and mortality. Usually, the main followed strategy to obtain galactosylated polymeric carriers is to use galactosylated copolymers. The chemical modifications of preformed polymers with sugar-containing reagents is followed for obtaining lactosaminated human albumin, galactosylated phospholipid-polyaminoacid and polylactide (PLA)- polyaminoacid c…

The Zero Power Nuclear Reactor AGN-201 “Costanza” as a tool for Higher Education and Research in Nuclear Engineering

2009

The “Zero Power” Nuclear Reactor AGN-201 “Costanza” available at Nuclear Engineering Department of Palermo University is a valuable tool for educational purpose and advanced research. Besides being a useful tool for training of operators, without the time period limits on start-up and shut-down of the larger reactors, it allows the study of all phenomena regarding Nuclear Reactor Physics, Applied Neutronics, Neutron Dosimetry, Nuclear measurements as well as testing of nuclear instrumentation and methods. The experience of work and the obtained results highlight the simplicity of AGN-201 reactor control, its intrinsic safety and its overall versatility in various fields of Nuclear Engineeri…
