The Secreted Protein C10orf118 Is a New Regulator of Hyaluronan Synthesis Involved in Tumour-Stroma Cross-Talk.

2021

Simple Summary Hyaluronan is a main glycosaminoglycan in extracellular matrix with an important role in breast cancer progression. Alterations in its synthesis and size may affect tu-mour growth and metastasis. Communication between stromal and breast cancer cells consists of the secretion of factors that provoke a series of cell signalling that influence cell fate and tis-sue microenvironment, by favouring tumour cell survival and motility. Here, we present the c10orf118 protein expressed in high amounts by breast tumour cells as a new regulator in hya-luronan synthesis. This protein is found both in Golgi and secreted in the extracellular matrix, whereas its role is still unknown. The sec…

Evoked potentials (EPs) are well established in clinical practice for diagnosis and prognosis in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, their value is limited to the assessment of their respective functional systems. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coupled with electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) to investigate cortical excitability and spatiotemporal dynamics of TMS-evoked neural activity in MS patients. Thirteen patients with early relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) with a median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) of 1.0 (range 0-2.5) and 16 age- and gender-matched healthy controls received single-pulse TMS of left and right primary motor cortex (L-M1 and R-M1), respectively…

Time course of human 40 Hz EEG activity accompanying P3 responses in an auditory oddball paradigm

1997

In order to quantify the time course of auditory P3-related gamma activity, root mean square (RMS) values were calculated from band-filtered (30-45 Hz) target and non-target responses in an auditory oddball experiment. Evoked (phase locked) gamma activity was evaluated from the time domain averages, whereas induced (not necessarily phase locked) activity was analyzed on the basis of single trials. Gamma RMS values were integrated across different time windows, namely the prestimulus, N50/P50, N100, pre P3, P3 and post P3 window. The single trial P3 window hereby was defined by a maximum amplitude criterion. In accordance with other studies, we found a pronounced increase of evoked gamma act…

Low-frequency rTMS inhibitory effects in the primary motor cortex: Insights from TMS-evoked potentials

2014

The neuromodulatory effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been mostly investigated by peripheral motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). New TMS-compatible EEG systems allow a direct investigation of the stimulation effects through the analysis of TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs).We investigated the effects of 1-Hz rTMS over the primary motor cortex (M1) of 15 healthy volunteers on TEP evoked by single pulse TMS over the same area. A second experiment in which rTMS was delivered over the primary visual cortex (V1) of 15 healthy volunteers was conducted to examine the spatial specificity of the effects. Single-pulse TMS evoked four main components: P30, N45, P60 and N100. M…

Effects of antiepileptic drugs on cortical excitability in humans: A TMS-EMG and TMS-EEG study.

2018

Brain responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) are emergent noninvasive markers of neuronal excitability and effective connectivity in humans. However, the underlying physiology of these TMS-evoked EEG potentials (TEPs) is still heavily underexplored, impeding a broad application of TEPs to study pathology in neuropsychiatric disorders. Here we tested the effects of a single oral dose of three antiepileptic drugs with specific modes of action (carbamazepine, a voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) blocker; brivaracetam, a ligand to the presynaptic vesicle protein VSA2; tiagabine, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) reuptake inhibitor) on TEP a…

Event-related brain responses while listening to entire pieces of music

2017

Brain responses to discrete short sounds have been studied intensively using the event-related potential (ERP) method, in which the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is divided into epochs time-locked to stimuli of interest. Here we introduce and apply a novel technique which enables one to isolate ERPs in human elicited by continuous music. The ERPs were recorded during listening to a Tango Nuevo piece, a deep techno track and an acoustic lullaby. Acoustic features related to timbre, harmony, and dynamics of the audio signal were computationally extracted from the musical pieces. Negative deflation occurring around 100 milliseconds after the stimulus onset (N100) and positive deflation occ…

An Adaptive Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers

2021

AbstractThe alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is a powerful splitting algorithm for linearly constrained convex optimization problems. In view of its popularity and applicability, a growing attention is drawn toward the ADMM in nonconvex settings. Recent studies of minimization problems for nonconvex functions include various combinations of assumptions on the objective function including, in particular, a Lipschitz gradient assumption. We consider the case where the objective is the sum of a strongly convex function and a weakly convex function. To this end, we present and study an adaptive version of the ADMM which incorporates generalized notions of convexity and penalty…

The Role of Equity Crowdfunding Campaigns in Shaping Firm Innovativeness: Evidence from Italy

2023

PurposeThis paper aims to contribute to the scientific debate concerning the impact of equity crowdfunding on the performance of crowdfunded firms after campaigning. To this aim, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of the campaign and the subsequent firm innovativeness.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a quantitative research approach to evaluate if the entrepreneurial choices affecting the characteristics of the equity crowdfunding campaigns have an impact on the post-campaign firm innovativeness.FindingsThe results of the models show that the campaign characteristics have a direct impact on the firm innovativeness, both in te…

Forecasting : theory and practice

2022

Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a varie…

Lines on K3 quartic surfaces in characteristic 2

2016

We prove that a K3 quartic surface defined over a field of characteristic 2 can contain at most 68 lines. If it contains 68 lines, then it is projectively equivalent to a member of a 1-dimensional family found by Rams and Sch\"utt.
