Factors selection in landslide susceptibility modelling on large scale following the gis matrix method: application to the river Beiro basin (Spain)

2012

A procedure to select the controlling factors connected to the slope instability has been defined. It allowed us to assess the landslide susceptibility in the Rio Beiro basin (about 10 km2) over the northeastern area of the city of Granada (Spain). Field and remote (Google EarthTM) recognition techniques allowed us to generate a landslide inventory consisting in 127 phenomena. To discriminate between stable and unstable conditions, a diagnostic area had been chosen as the one limited to the crown and the toe of the scarp of the landslide. 15 controlling or determining factors have been defined considering topographic, geologic, geomorphologic and pedologic available data. Univariate tests, …

Chemical fingerprint of outdoor PM2.5 in Malta

2015

Intro: RESPIRA (EU Funded - Italia-Malta 07-13) indicated that living in Malta is a risk factor for asthma. Aim: To determine the chemical profile of PM2.5 in Malta, and compare with reference values. Methods: Using FAI pumps at 10l/min/48hr, samples were collected on Teflon and Quartz filters from 6 schools and 46 homes in Malta. Total ICP-MS measurement (Residual+extracted), X ray Fluorescence, and thermo-optical methods(TO) were used for analysis by CNR in Rome. Aeroqual IQM60 counters were used for total PM2.5 mass. All data in ng/m3, Mean, (1st to 3rd quartile) of all 48 hour measurements.

Translation as a measure of literary domination: the case of Quebec literature translated in Spain (1975-2004)

2010

Recent literary manifestos claim that “the center is no longer the center” (Le Devoir 2007). Indeed, it is generally admitted that Quebec literature has been more or less independent from the French field since the 1970’s. However, the analysis of the translation of this literature –its international circulation, and the almost compulsory stopover in France before being selected for translation by the agents of other literary fields– reveals various mechanisms through which the French symbolic center still exerts its power. Drawing on the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture to the international space (Casanova 1999; Sapiro 2007, 2008; etc.), this article argues that transl…

Urokinase activates macrophage PON2 gene transcription via the PI3K/ROS/MEK/SREBP-2 signalling cascade mediated by the PDGFR-β

2009

Aims We have recently shown that urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) increases oxidative stress (OS), cholesterol biosynthesis, and paraoxonase 2 (PON2) expression in macrophages via binding to its receptor, the uPAR. Since PON2 is regulated by both OS and cholesterol content, we hypothesized that uPA elicits a cascade of signal transduction events shared by NADPH oxidase and cholesterol biosynthesis that culminates in PON2 gene expression. Here, we investigated the signalling pathway that leads to the expression of PON2 in macrophages in response to uPA. Methods and results The increase in macrophage PON2 mRNA levels in response to uPA was shown to depend on PON2 gene promoter activation…

Dihydroquercetin (DHQ) induced HO-1 and NQO1 expression against oxidative stress through the Nrf2-dependent antioxidant pathway.

2013

Dihydroquercetin (DHQ) is a well-known antioxidant agent. In the present investigation, we reported for the first time that DHQ stimulates the expression of phase II detoxifying enzymes through the Nrf2-dependent signaling pathway. The IC50 values of DHQ for reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazol (DPPH), reducing power assay, lipid peroxidation assay, and xanthine oxidase inhibition were 5.96, 4.31, 2.03, and 13.24 μM, respectively. DHQ possessed considerable protective activity from oxidative DNA damage. A luciferase reporter assay also demonstrated that DHQ-activated signaling resulted in the increased transcriptional activity of Nrf2 through binding to the ARE (antioxidant response e…

The Wilms' tumor suppressor gene (wt1) product regulates Dax-1 gene expression during gonadal differentiation.

1999

Gonadal differentiation is dependent upon a molecular cascade responsible for ovarian or testicular development from the bipotential gonadal ridge. Genetic analysis has implicated a number of gene products essential for this process, which include Sry, WT1, SF-1, and DAX-1. We have sought to better define the role of WT1 in this process by identifying downstream targets of WT1 during normal gonadal development. We have noticed that in the developing murine gonadal ridge, wt1 expression precedes expression of Dax-1, a nuclear receptor gene. We document here that the spatial distribution profiles of both proteins in the developing gonad overlap. We also demonstrate that WT1 can activate the D…

Aberrant gene expression profiles in Mediterranean sea urchin reproductive tissues after metal exposures

2019

Abstract Marine organisms are simultaneously exposed to numerous pollutants, among which metals probably represent the most abundant in marine environments. In order to evaluate the effects of metal exposure at molecular level in reproductive tissues, we profiled the sea urchin transcriptional response after non-lethal exposures using pathway-focused mRNA expression analyses. Herein, we show that exposures to relatively high concentrations of both essential and toxic metals hugely affected the gonadic expression of several genes involved in stress-response, detoxification, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, without significant changes in gonadosomatic indices. Even though …

Conversion of nadir, narrowband reflectance in red and near-infrared channels to hemispherical surface albedo

1997

Abstract Measured nadir-viewed narrow-band reflectanees in red and near infrared channels simulating AVHRR Channels 1 and 2 are compared with measured integrated solar spectrum hemispherical albedos. Reflectanees and albedos were measured from an aircraft over four widely different vegetation surfaces in southeastern Tasmania (Australia). A linear function is used to simultaneously correct for narrow band to broad band conversion errors and to convert nadir viewed reflectances to hemispherical albedos. While the application of the conversion equation presented is limited to the vegetation types of the study, the equation is independent of vegetation type. Results indicate that the reflectan…

Materiał badawczy stanowiły szczepy T. viride 21 i T. viride 56 wyizolowane metodą selekcyjną z powierzchni technologicznej zakładu produkującego żywność. Stosowany do dezynfekcji linii technologicznej Divosan Forte (DF) testowano w przeliczeniu na czysty kwas nad…
