Treated wastewaters discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and livestock effluents are the main sources of contamination of aquatic environments and of agricultural soils by human and animal fecal micro-organisms. Contaminated waters, especially bathing waters, may present a sanitary risk for humans if the concentrations of fecal micro-organisms are high, thus indicating the potential presence of pathogenic and/or antibiotic resistant strains. Soils and crops also can be contaminated by these micro-organisms when treated wastewaters are used to irrigate cultivated soils. Consequently, microbiological quality controls are mandatory for bathing waters and treated wastewaters to ma…

Interactions between Pisum sativum & pseudomonads, consequences on plant iron nutrition and growth and immunity
2019
Pea has a high potential in agroecology, however, it may suffer from a susceptibility to iron deficiency in calcareous soils. This susceptibility varies depending on cultivars. Pseudomonad siderophores, pyoverdines (pvd), were shown to promote iron nutrition in Arabidopsis and tobacco. The hypothesis was therefore raised that variation in iron susceptibility between pea cultivars could be related to differences in their ability to recruit fluorescent pseudomonads (fp) contributing to siderophore-mediated iron nutrition. Our aims were to compare i) the impact of a susceptible (S) and a tolerant (T) cultivar of pea on fp biodiversity with a focus on their pvd, and in return ii) the impact of …
Engineering a Saccharomyces cerevisiae Wine Yeast That Exhibits Reduced Ethanol Production during Fermentation under Controlled Microoxygenation Cond…
2006
ABSTRACTWe recently showed that expressing an H2O-NADH oxidase inSaccharomyces cerevisiaedrastically reduces the intracellular NADH concentration and substantially alters the distribution of metabolic fluxes in the cell. Although the engineered strain produces a reduced amount of ethanol, a high level of acetaldehyde accumulates early in the process (1 g/liter), impairing growth and fermentation performance. To overcome these undesirable effects, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of the impact of oxygen on the metabolic network of the same NADH oxidase-expressing strain. While reducing the oxygen transfer rate led to a gradual recovery of the growth and fermentation performance, its i…

Iconicity and Typography in Steve McCaffery's Panel-Poems
2007
This paper discusses Steve McCaffery's "Panel-Poems", first realized in the 1960s, with respect to the international context of concrete poetry and the emergence of a poetics of iconicity amongst a North-American avant-garde in the second half of the twentieth century. The material emphasis of McCaffery's poetry is played out typographically in his work "Carnival" (1967-75) through procedures that place the letter, the smallest denominator of language and the page in newly imagined networks of signification. The experiment with the environment of writing is sustained by a reliance upon the typewriter and other forms of scription that conceive of the reader as an active participant in the cr…

Intimacy in Cinema: Critical Essays on English Language Film
2014
International audience; Though intimacy has been a wide concern in the humanities, it has received little critical attention in film studies. This collection of essays investigates both the potential intimacy of cinema as a medium and the possibility of a cinema of intimacy where it is least expected. As a notion defined by binaries--inside and outside, surface and depth, public and private, self and other--intimacy, because it implies sharing, calls into question the boundaries between these extremes, and the border separating mainstream cinema and independent or auteur cinema. Following on Thomas Elsaesser's theories of the relationship between the intimacy of cinema and the cinema of int…
Implicit learning of non-local musical rules : A comment on Kuhn and Dienes
2009
International audience; In a recent study, G. Kuhn and Z. Dienes (2005) reported that participants previously exposed to a set of musical tunes generated by a biconditional grammar subsequently preferred new tunes that respected the grammar over new ungrammatical tunes. Because the study and test tunes did not share any chunks of adjacent intervals, this result may be construed as straightforward evidence for the implicit learning of a structure that was only governed by nonlocal dependency rules. It is shown here that the grammar modified the statistical distribution of perceptually salient musical events, such as the probability that tunes covered an entire octave. When the influence of t…
