Sirolimus-Induced Vascular Dysfunction

2008

Objectives This study sought to analyze mechanisms that mediate vascular dysfunction induced by sirolimus. Background Despite excellent antirestenotic capacity, sirolimus-eluting stents have been found to trigger coronary endothelial dysfunction and impaired re-endothelialization. Methods To mimic the continuous sirolimus exposure of a stented vessel, Wistar rats underwent drug infusion with an osmotic pump for 7 days. Results Sirolimus treatment caused a marked degree of endothelial dysfunction as well as a desensitization of the vasculature to the endothelium-independent vasodilator nitroglycerin. Also, sirolimus stimulated intense transmural superoxide formation as detected by dihydroeth…

Association of female aging with decreased parthenogenetic activation, raised MPF, and MAPKs activities and reduced levels of glutathione S-transfera…

2004

This study aims to determine in the mouse whether oocytes from reproductively old females exhibit a different susceptibility to be parthenogenetically activated when compared to oocytes from young females. At the age of 10–12 (young-female group) or 60–62 (old-female group) weeks, hybrid female mice were superovulated using pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) followed by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) 48 hr later. After removing the cumulus cells, oocytes were exposed to any of two different activating protocols: (a) 6-min exposure to 8% ethanol; and (b) treatment with 200 μM thimerosal for 15 min followed by 8 mM dithiothreitol (DTT) for 30 min. Oocytes from old female mice displ…

Evidence-based recommendations for the therapeutic management of angioedema owing to hereditary C1 inhibitor deficiency: consensus report of an Inter…

2011

Angioedema owing to hereditary deficiency of C1 inhibitor (HAE) is a rare, life-threatening, disabling disease. In the last 2 years, the results of well-designed and controlled trials with existing and new therapies for this condition have been published, and new treatments reached the market. Current guidelines for the treatment for HAE were released before the new trials and before the new treatments became available and were essentially based on observational studies and expert opinion. To provide evidence-based HAE treatment guidelines supported by the new studies, a conference was held in Gargnano del Garda, Italy, from September 26 to 29, 2010. The meeting hosted 58 experienced HAE ex…

Cardiac complications after laparoscopic large hiatal hernia repair. Is it related with staple fixation of the mesh? -Report of three cases

2015

Introduction Laparoscopic Nissen operation with mesh reinforcement remains being the most popular operation for large hiatal hernia repair. Complications related to mesh placement have been widely described. Cardiac complications are rare, but have a fatal outcome if they are misdiagnosed. Presentation of cases We sought to outline our institutional experience of three patients who developed cardiac complications following a laparoscopic Nissen operation for large hiatal hernia repair. Discussion Laparoscopic hiatoplasty and Nissen fundoplication are safe and effective procedures for the hiatal hernia repair, but they are not exempt from complications. Fixation technique and material used m…

Goserelin acetate to avoid hysterectomy in pre-menopausal women with fibroids requiring surgery

1999

Objective: To obtain information on the efficacy of repeated short cycles of GNRH agonist treatment in order to avoid hysterectomy in near-menopausal women with symptomatic fibroids. Study design: 72 pre-menopausal women (mean age 50 years) with one or more uterine fibroids >10 cm in diameter, symptomatic menorrhagia lasting three months or more and haemoglobin=9 g/dl entered the study. The patients were randomized with ratio of approximately 1:4 to: (a) immediate surgery; or (b) treatment with goserelin acetate. Patients randomized to goserelin acetate received a first cycle of 3.6 mg depot once every 28 days for four months. They were followed-up for three years. If menorrhagia was observ…

Endocrinology and physiology of pseudocyesis

2013

This literature review on pseudocyesis or false pregnancy aims to find epidemiological, psychiatric/psychologic, gynecological and endocrine traits associated with this condition in order to propose neuroendocrine/endocrine mechanisms leading to the emergence of pseudocyetic traits. Ten women from 5 selected studies were analyzed after applying stringent criteria to discriminate between cases of true pseudocyesis (pseudocyesis vera) versus delusional, simulated or erroneous pseudocyesis. The analysis of the reviewed studies evidenced that pseudocyesis shares many endocrine traits with both polycystic ovarian syndrome and major depressive disorder, although the endocrine traits are more akin…

Characterization of nitric oxide synthase isoforms expressed in different structures of the guinea pig cochlea.

1997

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and NADPH diaphorase staining has previously been reported in mammalian cochlea. Here we demonstrate immunoreactivity for neuronal-type NOS I and endothelial-type NOS III in the cochlea of the guinea pig. NOS I immunoreactivity was seen in inner and outer hair cells, and spiral ganglion cells. Staining for NOS I was also shown in basal and intermediate cells of the stria vascularis, spiral ligament cells, and the media of vessels near the modiolus. An antibody to NOS III stained primarily vascular endothelial cells. Some NOS III immunoreactivity was also detected in spiral ganglion cells. An antibody to the inducible-type NOS II did not stain any structu…

Does chronic pain hinder physical activity among older adults with type 2 diabetes?

2021

Background: Physical activity (PA) is a key component in management of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Pain might be a barrier to PA especially among older adults with T2D, but surprisingly few studies have investigated the association between chronic pain and PA. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of chronic pain among older adults with T2D and to examine the association between chronic pain and PA while taking important life-contextual factors into account. Methods: Data of this register-based, cross-sectional study were collected in a survey among adults with T2D (n=2866). In the current study, only respondents aged 65–75 years were included (response rate 63%, n=1386). Data were analysed by …
