Perceived Parental and Peer Support in Relation to Canadian, Cuban, and Spanish Adolescents’ Valuing of Academics and Intrinsic Academic Motivation

The aim of this study was to explore possible parent and peer influences on adolescents’ valuing of academics and intrinsic academic motivation in cultures varying in traditional emphasis on the family unit (Cuba, Canada, and Spain). Perceived parent and peer support, parents’ expectations, and valuing of academics significantly predicted adolescents’ valuing of education and motivation. Spanish adolescents were less motivated than members of the other ethnic groups. <p>The plays <em>Harlem duet </em>(1997) by African Canadian playwright Djanet Sears and <em>Desdemona </em>(2012) by Toni Morrison signify upon European texts aiming to carve out a new definition of what it means to be black in North America. Therefore both texts make for interesting reading in the study of (black) identity construction within US and Canadian contexts for, by revising Shakespeare’s <em>Othello</em>, they rethink and rewrite a social and racial reality unrelentingly disrupted by difference and hybridity. Phytotoponymy and Synphytotoponymy in Western Granada Province (Andalusia, Spain)

En el marco de la investigación etnobotánica desarrollada en el poniente granadino, se ha realizado un estudio sobre la toponimia de la comarca con atención a los apelativos de origen vegetal (fitotopónimos y sinfitotopónimos). La información —obtenida de la Gerencia Territorial del Catastro de Granada, de la Junta de Andalucía y de nuestro trabajo de campo— se ha incluido en una base de datos con el programa Microsoft Excell®. Un total de 98 especies vegetales se encuentran representadas en la toponimia local, dando nombre a 593 lugares del territorio. Se aportan comentarios sobre el significado ecológico, paleofitogeográfico y etnobotánico de las especies reflejadas en la toponimia.

The Effect of Vanadium on the Content of Chlorophyll, P-700 and Cytochrome f at Different Light Intensities in Chlorella fusca

Summary Cells of Chlorella fusca, were grown in liquid medium supplemented ,vith O.2% glucose and varied concentrations of vanadium both at 5 different light intensities and in the dark. \Vith increasing concentrations of vanadium the content of chlorophyll, P-700 and cytochrome f increased as well, each, however, in a different way. At the saturating concentration of 20 µg vanadium per litre the pigment content per dry weight was double as high as that of the vanadium-free control; the ratio of chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b increased from 2.1 to 2.9. Post-Translational Regulation of CYP450s Metabolism As Revealed by All-Atoms Simulations of the Aromatase Enzyme.

Phosphorylation by kinases enzymes is a widespread regulatory mechanism able of rapidly altering the function of target proteins. Among these are cytochrome P450s (CYP450), a superfamily of enzymes performing the oxidation of endogenous and exogenous substrates thanks to the electron supply of a redox partner. In spite of its pivotal role, the molecular mechanism by which phosphorylation modulates CYP450s metabolism remains elusive. Abstract Ellipticine (5,11-dimethyl-[6H]-pyrido[4,3b]carbazole) binds with an affinity greater than most other compounds known to interact with P-450. Control and 3-methylcholanthrene-induced aryl hydrocarbon (benzo[ a ]pyrene) hydroxylase (EC 1.14.14.2) and acetanilide 4-hydroxylase and control and phenobarbital-induced ethylmorphine N -demethylase activities are all markedly inhibited by ellipticine to about the same extent. Cytochromes P450 enzymes (CYP450s) promote the oxidative metabolism of a variety of substrates via the electrons supplied by the cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) and upon formation of a CPR/CYP450 adduct. In spite of the pivotal regulatory importance of this process, the impact of CPR binding on the functional properties of its partner CYP450 remains elusive. Ferric-reductase activities in Vibrio vulnificus biotypes 1 and 2.

In this paper, the ferric-reductase activities of Vibrio vulnificus were investigated. This species comprises two biotypes pathogenic for humans and eels that are able to express different mechanisms for iron acquisition. All strains of both biotypes used in this study were able to reduce ferric citrate, irrespective of the iron levels in the growth medium. Some variation in the degree of reduction was observed among the strains, with the highest values corresponding to one acapsulated environmental strain of biotype 1. When cell fractions were tested, only those from periplasm and cytoplasm showed reductase activity whereas no activity was detected in membranes. Low temperatures inhibited …
