Effect of Pseudomonas sp. MT5 baths on Flavobacterium columnare infection of rainbow trout and on microbial diversity on fish skin and gills
2005
Use of Pseudomonas sp. strain MT5 to prevent and treat Flavobacterium columnare infection was studied in 2 experiments with fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. In the first experiment, length heterogeneity analysis of PCR-amplified DNA fragments (LH-PCR) was used to assess the effect of antagonistic baths on the microbial diversity of healthy and experimentally infected fish. In the 148 samples studied, no difference was found between bathed and unbathed fish, and 3 fragment lengths were detected most frequently: 500 (in 75.7% of the samples), 523 (62.2%) and 517 bp (40.5%). The species contributing to these fragment sizes were Pseudomonas sp., Rhodococcus sp. and F. columnare, re…
An updated checklist and biogeography of the Sardinian large branchiopods, with a focus on Spinicaudata (Crustacea, Branchiopoda)
2021
Author(s): Marrone, Federico; Alfonso, Giuseppe; Cottarelli, Vezio; Botta, Marco Massimo; Koepp, Christian; Stoch, Fabio | Abstract: The large branchiopod fauna of Sardinia is reviewed based both on literature and newly collected data. Based on the available evidence, 13 taxa are present on the island (8 Anostraca, 2 Notostraca, and 3 Spinicaudata). Among them, the finding of the spinicaudatan Leptestheria dahalacensis is new for Sardinia, while the spinicaudatans Cyzicus bucheti and Eulimnadia sp. were overlooked in the most recent synopses on the fauna of the island due to misidentifications. Conversely, Cyzicus tetracerus and Limnadia lenticularis, previously erroneously reported based o…
Melatonin modulates diacylglycerol and arachidonic acid metabolism in the anterior pituitary of immature rats.
1990
In pituitary glands of immature rats prelabeled in vitro with [3H]arachidonic acid, melatonin diminished the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH)-induced increase in [3H]diacylglycerol accumulation as well as [3H]arachidonic acid release from the tissue. Melatonin reduced also LHRH-stimulated incorporation of [3H]glycerol into pituitary [3H]diacylglycerol. The effect was day-time dependent: in the evening experiment melatonin was effective at 0.1 nM concentration while in the morning it had no effect even at 10 nM concentration. The effect of melatonin was also abolished by pretreatment with pertussis toxin. Diacylglycerol and/or arachidonic acid might serve as 2nd messengers transd…
Effects of sublethal levels of tributyltin chloride on a new toxicity test organism,Liza saliens (osteichthyes, mugilidae): a histological study
2006
The histopathological effects of 10−7 and 10−9M tributyltin(IV)chloride,TBTCl, solutions on different Liza saliens organs have been studied by light microscope. The fish were sacrificed after 3–4 h incubation in 10−7M TBTCl solution or after 15 days incubation in 10−9M solution. The observed histopathological changes were dose- and time-dependent. The 10−7M TBTCl concentration resulted in major damage to the gill epithelium, indicating that TBTCl primarily interfered with the respiration, osmoregulation, acid balance and nitrogenous waste excretion processes. After incubation in 10−9M TBTCl solution the fish lived 20 or more days, but many of the organs were altered. Thymus atrophy, reduced…
Turning waste into gold: Sustainable feed made of discards from the food industries promotes gonad development and colouration in the commercial sea …
2021
Abstract Development of sustainable aquaculture practices is a suitable solution to reduce the pressure on overexploited stocks of the Mediterranean sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus, and to respond to the increasing market demand. To move forward the Blue Growth and following the principles of circular economy, a three-month feeding experiment was conducted to test a sustainable feed based on food processing discards on sea urchins. Two feed formulations differing on the proportions of the two main ingredients (endive outermost leaves and European anchovy discards in a ratio of 60:40 and 80:20 respectively) were prepared and tested on P. lividus gonad yield, development and quality. The re…
MITOCHONDRIOGENESIS IN MATURING SEA URCHIN OOCYTES: A COMPUTERIZED RECONSTRUCTION ANALYSIS
1996
Abstract The dynamics of chondriome changes in oogenesis of the sea urchinParacentrotus lividuswere studied by electron microscopy. An oocyte-enriched fraction obtained by gonad mechanical dissociation without protease treatment was used. The shape, size and arrangement of mitochondria (Mt) in cells were quantitatively analysed on the basis of data from reconstruction experiments, with serial sections performed using a specific computer program. At all stages of oogenesis, the chondriome was shown to consist of rod-shaped Mt of various lengths and also of small amounts of globular Mt about 0.3 μm in diameter. Chondriome transformation during oogenesis is shown to involve the following proce…
Reproduction and growth of the painted comber Serranus scriba (Serranidae) of the Marine Reserve of Lanzarote Island (Central-Eastern Atlantic)
2005
Abstract The population biology of painted comber Serranus scriba (Linnaeus, 1758) of the Canary Islands coast was studied to estimate gonad morphology, sexuality, age and growth. Analysis of gonad organization and development revealed that it is a functional simultaneous hermaphrodite. Its anatomy and growth pattern of the reproductive cells is similar to that described in other species of the genus Serranus , although the sequence of vesicles appearing varies during vitellogenesis. Spawning season occurred from January to September with a peak in June. Individuals reached 50% maturity at 17.3 cm TL and 95% at 22.7 cm TL. Length–weight relationship was described by the following parameters…
Intraovarian regulation of gonadotropin-dependent folliculogenesis depends on notch receptor signaling pathways not involving Delta-like ligand 4 (Dl…
2013
Background In-situ hybridisation studies demonstrate that Notch receptors and ligands are expressed in granulosa cells (GCs) and in the theca layer vasculature of growing follicles. Notch signaling involves cell-to-cell interaction mediated by transmembrane receptors and ligands. This signaling pathway may represent a novel intraovarian regulator of gonadotropin-dependent follicular development to the preovulatory stage. We hypothesized that blocking Notch pathways would disrupt follicular maturation in the mouse ovary. Methods Hypophysectomized CD21 female mice were administered pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) for 3 days to stimulate follicular development. In one experiment, a pan…
Migration, cultural sustainability, and integration : a discourse analysis of multiculturalism and migration in Canada and Finland
2017
The aim of this thesis is to assess how the discoursesof migration and multiculturalism arebeendepicted in the Finnish and Canadian policy documents. This was assessed by using the concept of governmentality and multiculturalism as the theoretical framework of the study. The concept of governmentality was used as a background to examine and interpret power relations and discourses in the data and how they influence contemporarydebate in these societies. The result was analysedqualitatively using theoretical –discourse analysis. And the analysis of the study was mainly based on the integration policy documents from Finland and Canada. The result of the study indicated that both Canada and Fi…
