Tonos condicionados por la estructura métrica y pies mínimamente recursivos en Chugach Alutiiq

2016

This article presents a reanalysis of the foot-based phonology of Chugach Alutiiq (henceforth CA), a language that displays a complex mixed ternary–binary rhythm, as well as metrically conditioned distributions of pitch, fortition and vowel lengthening. Elaborating on earlier analyses of CA that had posited some kind of ternary constituent (Hewitt, 1991, 1992; Leer, 1985a, 1985b, 1985c; Rice, 1992), we propose CA should be analyzed by means of the Internally Layered Ternary (ILT) foot, a minimal recursive foot (Prince, 1980; Selkirk, 1980), which was recently revived in a typological study of binary–ternary stress (Martínez-Paricio & Kager, 2015). It will be argued that ILT feet capture CA’…

La divisa de las granadas del rey Enrique IV de Castilla y su estela posterior

2015

ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the meaning of the impresa or device of the pomegranates, with the motto « Agro dulce », utilized by Henry IV (1425-1474), of the House of Trastamara, King of Castile from 1454 until his death. By means of a review of vestiges that remain of the device, especially in architectonic elements, I postulate that the pomegranate may have been used as the family impresa of the House of Trastamara and their descendants. This, it seems, can be deduced from the pictura of the device in several personal imprese of relatives who lived in the sixteenth century. KEYWORDS: pomegranate, devices, royal clemency, Henry IV, Catholic Monarchs, Catherine of Aragon, Charles V, Phili…

Flow cytometric investigation of neutrophil oxidative burst and apoptosis in physiological and pathological situations

2009

Flow cytometric analysis provides a rapid screen for abnormalities of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) function and reflect their behavior in vivo more accurately. This review summarizes the major fluorescent probes used to study PMN oxidative burst and apoptosis using flow cytometry (FCM). We also provide examples of FCM studies in physiological and pathological situations, illustrating the advantages of FCM for assessment of PMN oxidative burst and PMN apoptosis. These data point to the role of FCM in detecting primary immunodeficiencies such as IRAK4 deficiency and support the use of the assessment of the PMN oxidative burst for routine testing in patients with bacterial infections. Pro-oxidant activity of indicaxanthin from Opuntia ficus indica modulates arachidonate metabolism and prostaglandin synthesis through lipid peroxide …

2014

Macrophages come across active prostaglandin (PG) metabolism during inflammation, shunting early production of pro-inflammatory towards anti-inflammatory mediators terminating the process. This work for the first time provides evidence that a phytochemical may modulate the arachidonate (AA) metabolism in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, promoting the ultimate formation of anti-inflammatory cyclopentenone 15deoxy-PGJ2. Added 1 h before LPS, indicaxanthin from Opuntia Ficus Indica prevented activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and over-expression of PGE2 synthase-1 (mPGES-1), but up-regulated cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) and PGD2 synthase (H-PGDS), with final product…

Glucose-independent improvement of vascular dysfunction in experimental sepsis by dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibition.

2012

Aims Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors are a novel class of drugs for the treatment of hyperglycaemia. Preliminary evidence suggests that their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects may have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. In the present study, we investigate in an experimental sepsis model whether linagliptin exerts pleiotropic vascular effects independent of its glucose-lowering properties. Methods and results Linagliptin (83 mg/kg chow for 7days) was administered in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (10 mg/kg, single i.p. dose/24 h)-induced sepsis. Vascular relaxation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, expression of NADPH oxida…

Impact of Vanadium(IV)-Oxy Acetylacetonate and Vanadium(III) Acetylacetonatel on the DPPC Liposome Membranes: EPR Studies

2017

The effect of vanadium (IV)-oxy acetylacetonate (V4) and vanadium(III) acetylacetonate (V3) on the liposome membranes formed of synthetic lecithin (DPPC) was presented in this paper. Liposomes were formed during the sonication of DPPC lecithin in an aqueous medium. The concentration of the vanadium compounds changed in the range of 0% to 2.4% in molar ratio to the lecithin. The EPR technique made use of three spin probes penetrating the different areas of the membrane (as follows: TEMPO, 16-DOXYL stearic acid methyl ester, stearic acid 5-DOXYL methyl ester). TEMPO probe penetrates the interphase water-lipid (partition parameter F), the probe 16-DOXYL locates in the middle of the lipid bilay…

Trench-parallel spreading ridge subduction and its consequences for the geological evolution of the overriding plate: Insights from analogue models a…

2018

A series of 3-D asthenospheric-scale analogue models have been conducted in the laboratory in order to simulate the arrival of a spreading ridge at the trench and understand its effect on plate kinematics, slab geometry, and on the deformation of the overriding plate. These models are made of a two-layered linearly viscous system simulating the lithosphere and asthenosphere. We reproduce the progressive decrease in thickness of the oceanic lithosphere at the trench. We measure plate kinematics, slab geometry and upper plate deformation. Our experiments reveal that the subduction of a thinning plate beneath a freely moving overriding continent favors a decrease of the subduction velocity and…

An international genome-wide meta-analysis of primary biliary cholangitis: Novel risk loci and candidate drugs.

2021

[BACKGROUND & AIMS] Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intra-hepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology. We undertook the largest GWMA of PBC to date, aiming to identify additional risk loci and prioritise candidate genes for in silico drug efficacy screening. [METHODS] We combined new and existing genotype data for 10, 516 cases and 20, 77…

Thrombophilic genetic factors PAI-1 4G-4G and MTHFR 677TT as risk factors of alcohol, cryptogenic liver cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis, in a Ca…

2015

The thrombophilic genetic factors (THRGFs), PAI-1 4G-4G, MTHFR 677TT, V Leiden 506Q and Prothrombin 20210A, were studied as risk factors in 865 Caucasian patients with liver cirrhosis, consecutively enrolled from June 2008 to January 2014. A total of 582 HCV, 80 HBV, 94 alcohol, (82 with more than one etiologic factor) and 191 cryptogenic patients with liver cirrhosis had been consecutively enrolled; 243 patients showed portal vein thrombosis (PVT). At least one of the above THRGFs was present in 339/865 patients (39.2%). PAI-1 4G-4G and MTHFR 677TT were the most frequent THRGFs, statistically significant in patients with alcohol, cryptogenic liver cirrhosis, and PVT: respectively 24 and 28…
