Kinetic experiments on the synergistic effect of NADH on microsomal drug oxidation.

1974

Abstract1. The synergistic effect of NADH on the NADPH-dependent mixed function oxidation of p-nitroanisole and hexobarbital can be measured both photometrically and by following the substrate-induced oxygen consumption. The increase in reaction rate is about 50% and lasts as long as NADH is present in the microsomal suspension.2. The oxidation of added NADH is increased by hexobarbital, ethylmorphine and SKF 525-A. Lineweaver-Burk transformation of the NADH oxidation rates yields straight lines for xenobiotic substrates suggesting Michaelis constants similar to those obtained from metabolic experiments. NADH oxidation in the absence of NADPH is about half as rapid as in its presence.3. Som…

Outcomes of Patients With Asymptomatic Aortic Stenosis Followed Up in Heart Valve Clinics

2018

International audience; Importance - The natural history and the management of patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) have not been fully examined in the current era. Objective - To determine the clinical outcomes of patients with asymptomatic AS using data from the Heart Valve Clinic International Database. Design, setting, and participants - This registry was assembled by merging data from prospectively gathered institutional databases from 10 heart valve clinics in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Asymptomatic patients with an aortic valve area of 1.5 cm2 or less and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) greater than 50% at entry were considered for the prese…

TREATMENT OF PERSISTENTLY OPEN MACULAR HOLES WITH HEAVY SILICONE OIL (DENSIRON 68) VERSUS C2F6. A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED STUDY

2016

Abstract PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of a mixture of silicone oil and perfluorohexyloctane (Densiron 68) with C2F6 gas endotamponade in the retreatment of persistently open full-thickness macular holes. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 21 consecutive patients who were unsuccessfully operated on for large idiopathic full-thickness macular hole were randomly assigned to undergo a second vitrectomy with 20% perfluoroethane gas (C2F6, Group A) or with Densiron 68 tamponade (Group B). PRIMARY OUTCOMES: Endpoint (12 months) full-thickness macular hole closure rate by spectral domain optical coherence tomography and logMAR corrected distance visual acuity. SECONDARY OUTCOMES: po…

Optical coherence tomography angiography evaluation of peripapillary microvascular changes after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair

2021

PURPOSE To evaluate the radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPCP) vessel density (VD) and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes successfully treated with pars plana vitrectomy for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS In this cross-sectional multicenter clinical study, eyes with a minimum 12-month follow-up were reexamined. The RPCP VD and RNFL thickness in the rhegmatogenous retinal detachment subfields of the affected eye (study group) were compared with the corresponding areas of the healthy fellow eyes (control group). RESULTS Fifty-three eyes were included in the study. A significantly lower RPCP VD and RNFL thickness were observed in those subfields af…

Sex hormones and risk of liver tumor.

2007

The liver is morphologically and functionally modulated by sex hormones. Long-term use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) can induce both benign (hemangioma, adenoma, and focal nodular hyperplasia [FNH]) and malignant (hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) hepatocellular tumors. Hepatic adenomas (HAs) are rare, benign neoplasms usually occurring in young women, the development and the complications of which have been related to the strength of OCs and the duration of their use. HA incidence has fallen since the introduction of pills containing smaller amounts of estrogens. FNH is a benign lesion, most commonly seen in young women, which is thought to represent a …

Antimutagenic activity of organosulfur compounds from Allium is associated with phase II enzyme induction

2001

In a previous study, we showed that naturally occurring organosulfur compounds (OSCs) from garlic and onion modulated the activation of carcinogen via the alteration of cytochromes P450. The present study was undertaken to determine the incidence of the in vivo induction of phase II enzymes by individual OSCs on the genotoxicity of several carcinogens. Diallyl sulfide (DAS), diallyl disulfide (DADS), dipropyl sulfide (DPS) and dipropyl disulfide (DPDS), were administered by gavage (1mmol/kg) to male SPF Wistar rats for 4 consecutive days. The effects of treatments on phase II enzymes and on the genotoxicity of carcinogens were evaluated with hepatic cytosols and microsomes from OSCs-treated…

Sex change in plants and animals: a unified perspective

2014

The capacity of organisms to change their sex has evolved independently in several plant and animal lineages. Sex change has been widely studied, but research approaches have differed for plants and animals, and conclusions have often been taxon-specific. Although sex allocation theory provides a unifying framework for the study of sex change, this unity has not always been appreciated, especially in the botanical literature. Here, we review sex change with regard to its representation in relation to taxonomy and other sexual systems, with regard to its suggested adaptive benefits, and to the role of taxon-specific body architecture, such as modularity and gonadal structure. We highlight di…

The GENDER ATTENTION Observational Study: Gender and Hormonal Status Differences in the Incidence of Adverse Events During Cyclosporine Treatment in …

2017

Introduction: Female sex has been shown to be a risk factor for the development of adverse drug reactions; however, this has not been studied for cyclosporine (CsA). The aim of this study was to investigate, in Italian dermatological practice, the influence of gender and menopause and related hormones on the incidence of adverse events (AEs) during CsA treatment in psoriatic patients. Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational study conducted from May 2011 to June 2013. Patients with plaque psoriasis, undergoing a new CsA administration course, or about to start it, were enrolled in the outpatient clinics of Italian dermatological centers. During the 2–6 months of study duration, pati…
