Au@MnO nanoflowers: hybrid nanocomposites for selective dual functionalization and imaging.
2010
Recently, the development of hybrid nanostructures consisting of various materials has attracted considerable interest. The assembly of different nanomaterials with specific optical, magnetic, or electronic properties to multicomponent composites can change and even enhance the properties of the individual constituents. Specifically tuning the structure and interface interactions within the nanocomposites has resulted in novel platforms of materials that may lead the way to various future technologies, such as synchronous biolabeling, protein separation and detection, heterogeneous catalysis, and multimodal imaging in biomedicine. Of the various kinds of nanomaterials, gold nanorods show an…
Nanosensors and other techniques for detecting nanoparticles in the environment
2014
Abstract: Detecting nanomaterials in the environment is a demanding task, not only because of the extremely small size of the particles and their potential sequestration and agglomeration, but also because of their unique physical and chemical characteristics. The aim of this review is to recommend a way forward on tackling the challenge of engineered nanomaterial detection in the environment. An overview will be presented of the available analytical techniques used for the detection and characterization of nanoparticles in environmental matrices including particle-size analysis, particle-fraction concentration counts, surface-area analysis, morphology, and particle chemical composition ana…
Nanomaterials and phase sensitive based signal enhancment in surface plasmon resonance
2018
Measurement of small molecules in extremely dilute concentrations of analyte play an important role in different issues ranging from food industry to biological, pharmaceutical and therapeutical applications. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors can be a suitable choice for detection of small molecules based on interactions with biomolecules. However, sensitivity of the system for detection of these molecules is very low. Improving sensitivity has been a challenge for years. Therefore, different methods have been used to enhance SPR signals. The SPR signal enhancement using numerous nanomaterials has provided exciting results. Among various nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles (for instanc…
Applications of diatoms and silica nanotechnology in biosensing, drug and gene delivery, and formation of complex metal nanostructures
2011
Abstract Diatoms, single-cell eukaryotic microalgae, are present in nearly every water habitat and their silicon-dioxide (silica)-based cell walls of tens to hundreds of micrometers in size are the most interesting feature to be used in nanotechnology, including biosensing, drug delivery, molecular separation, molecular biology, biomimetics, frustule formation, and electronic, photonic, optical and structural materials. In this review, we present recent progress in applications of diatoms and silica nanomaterials in biosensing, drug and gene delivery, and formation of complex metal nanostructures.
Flash microwave synthesis of trevorite nanoparticles.
2008
Nickel ferrite nanoparticles have several possible applications as cathode materials for rechargeable batteries, named 'lithium-ion' batteries. In this study, NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} was prepared by microwave induced thermohydrolysis. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET method, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). All the results show that the microwave one-step flash synthesis leads in a very short time to NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} nanoparticles with elementary particles size close to 4-5 nm, and high specific surfaces (close to 240 m…
Silicon carbide nanowires: synthesis and cathodoluminescence
2009
Silicon carbide nanowires have been synthesized via a combustion synthesis route. Structural studies showed that obtained SiC nanowires belong dominantly to 3C polytype with zinc-blend structure. Cathodoluminescence spectra from these nanostructures within the temperature range of 77...300 K, show obvious differences with respect to the bulk materials. The exciton band of the bulk 3C-SiC is significantly damped and the prevailing line is found to be at 1.99 eV (77 K), proving the key role of defect centers in optical properties of the investigated nanomaterial.

Nanoparticles in Foods, Determination of
2013
This article discusses the state of the art in the identification and determination of nanoparticles in food. It is of utmost importance to determine, in addition to the particle-size distribution, the chemical composition as well as the physical and chemical properties of the nanomaterials within the sample. After a brief description of what nanomaterials are and how to classify them, sources and routes of nanomaterials to food are discussed. The article then follows the debate on legislative consideration, which has emerged very recently. Its main aim is to deliver information on how nanomaterials are determined in food because of the number of challenges that arise when analyzing food an…
Exploiting the Colloidal Stability and Solubilization Ability of Clay Nanotubes/Ionic Surfactant Hybrid Nanomaterials
2012
Halloysite clay nanotubes are functionalized by exploiting the different charges between the inner positive and the outer negative surfaces; accordingly, a selective adsorption is pursued by employing anionic and cationic surfactants. The obtained hybrid materials dispersed in aqueous phase are studied from the physicochemical viewpoint to investigate the colloidal stability that is a crucial parameter for applications. It is demonstrated that the adsorption of anionic surfactant into the HNTs lumen increases the net negative charge of the nanotubes enhancing the electrostatic repulsions and consequently the dispersion stability. The solubilization capability of these functionalized nanotub…
Microextraction with phases containing nanoparticles.
2015
In this article, the state of the art of microextraction techniques that involve nanoparticles or nanomaterials (NPs) is reviewed, with special emphasis on the applications described in the biomedical field. The uses and advantages of the different types of NPs such as carbon nanotubes (either single- and multi-walled) and other carbon-based materials, metallic NPs, including gold, silver and magnetic NPs, and silica NPs are summarized. The main strategies used to modify the selectivity, extractive capacity and/or the stability of NPs through a chemical reaction are also reviewed. The potential advantages of NPs in different forms of off-line and on-line microextraction are discussed, and …
