A work of “total” art. Phenomenology of the Italian memorial in Auschwitz

2016

In 1978 the Italian Association ANED (national association of people formerly deported to nazi camps) starts the design and implementation of a Memorial, to tell the story of the Italian deportation, shaping it with respect to the inner space of one of the existing blocks on the site of the extermination camp in Auschwitz (Block 21). From the first project idea, the art potentiality was assumed as the most suitable instrument for the construction of memory. The Memorial was configured, in fact, as a true work of total art, coincidence of intention and perfect synthesis of the various arts in compliance with the same program: a choral work, a work of artists and intellectuals who, each accor…

Religion and transnationalism: biographies of South Korean migrants – an empirical perspective

2014

As a result of studying interviews with Korean migrants (miners and nurses who moved to Germany and [some of them] further on to North America) we show how this group finds or “comes to religion”. After presenting a concept of religion, following the model of Ulrich Oevermann, parts of autobiographical narratives are analyzed and the complicated, intertwining and often conflicting relationships between religion and transnationalism are studied; we ask, among other things, if religion is becoming a compensation for moving back and forth between the home country and the country of residence. This discussion leads to further considerations concerning the connection between religion, church rel…

Choosing the Right Antifungal Agent in ICU Patients

2019

Fungi are responsible for around 20% of microbiologically documented infections in intensive care units (ICU). In the last decade, the incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFI), including candidemia, has increased steadily because of increased numbers of both immunocompromised and ICU patients. To improve the outcomes of patients with IFI, intensivists need to be aware of the inherent challenges. This narrative review summarizes the features of routinely used treatments directed against IFI in non-neutropenic ICU patients, which include three classes of antifungals: polyenes, azoles, and echinocandins. ICU patients' pathophysiological changes are responsible for deep changes in the phar…

Conditions of a Philosophical Discussion

2020

As its method, philosophy uses argumentative discussion. Philosophy does not often appeal directly to observations or experiences, although they have a place in argumentation as well. Because philosophy is discursive, it delves in the realms of language and the use of language. Defining concepts is a central theme. The rules and argumentation principles of rational discussion are another cornerstone of philosophy. I defend two things that are seen to be conflicting: philosophical relativity and common core rationality. Both are necessary in order to balance each other out. I argue that a certain intuitive and common conception of truth and reality is necessary in order to conduct philosophi…

Justicia transicional: conceptos clave y aspectos normativos

2018

This paper is an exposition about the key concepts of transitional justice. We will introduce briefly its four basic measures (penal responsibility, truth seeking, victim reparations and nonrepetition guarantees). After that, we will analyse some of the normative aspects and dilemmas that these measures involve. These questions include: opposite exigencies (for example, between truth and justice); problems related with the application of universal abstract norms to particular contexts; the complex balance between truth, memory and reconciliation; a disquisition about the concept of victim and the concept of perpetrator; and a reflection concerning the future of transitional justice.

„Na Ukrainie za owych dobrych czasów” – „Przed laty. Powieść ukraińska” Paulina Święcickiego

2020

The forgotten work and life of Paulin Święcicki (1841–1876), a writer from Kiev region and active in Galicia, represents a rare, authentic example of Polish‑Ukrainian cultural border. His debut work entitled 'Przed laty. Powieść ukraińska' (1865), despite being an artistic failure, is an interesting link between the heritage of the Romantic 'Ukrainian School' and the historical vision of Polish Borderlands in With fire and sword by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The creation of the 17th‑century reality of Ukrainian grasslands (noble, rural and Cossack existence), battle scenes (fights against the Tatars), romantic‑melodramatic plot – these are all adapted to a unique Ukrainian (not Polish‑centred) per…
