Type II keratin cDNAs from the rainbow trout: implications for keratin evolution.
2002
From a teleost fish, the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, we have cloned and sequenced cDNAs encoding five different type II keratins. The corresponding protein spots, as separated by 2D-PAGE of trout cytoskeletal preparations, have been identified by peptide mass mapping using MALDI mass spectrometry. Three of the sequenced keratins are expressed in the epidermis (subtype IIe), and two in simple epithelia and mesenchymal cells (subtype IIs). The IIs keratins are both orthologs of human K8. This leaves unsequenced only the trace component S3 of the biochemically established trout keratin catalog. A phylogenetic tree has been constructed from a multiple alignment of the rod domains of the …
Recovery of Historically Contaminated Watercourse Polluted by the Chemical Wood Industry: EROD Activity in Fish as Biomarker
2013
Despite outstanding process alterations over decades, pulp- and paper-mill-contaminated sediments and continuing exposure by the effluents may still have effects on biota. In this study, ecotoxicological impacts in the boreal watercourse were analyzed by measuring ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction from wild fish populations and from experimentally exposed fish. In order to assess the role of sediment-borne chemicals, juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed in the laboratory to the surface sediments of Lake Vatianjarvi and Southern Lake Saimaa, both watercourses impacted by the chemical wood industry for approximately a century. Hepatic EROD activity was also me…
Impaired crypsis of fish infected with a trophically transmitted parasite
2005
Trophically transmitted parasites may enhance their transmission by altering the phenotype of infected hosts to increase their vulnerability to predation by the next hosts in the life cycle. In an experimental study, we investigated whether the parasite Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) alters cryptic coloration and cryptic behaviour of infected rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, so that they would be more conspicuous to avian predators. The parasite reduces the vision of fish by lodging in the eyes and inducing cataract formation, which gives it an opportunity to affect fish crypsis. We examined the effect of the parasite on the ability of fish to adjust their coloration to the environme…
Feasibility study of a combi-PV panel for greenhouse energy supply and water recovery by nightly radiation towards the sky
2011
In southern European areas, characterized by high irradiation, the use of water for both evaporative cooling systems and hydroponic fertigation, represents a serious drawback for crop cultivation under cover. Water recovery systems seem to be an attractive solution, especially when they are integrated in the greenhouse construction. In this research, a feasibility study of applying a water recovery system driven by a combi-PV panel, in a semi-closed greenhouse was carried out. The prototype combi-PV panel was made by coupling an amorphous silicon panel with a sump stacked on the rear PV panel surface and filled with saline water. The system is driven by a cold-heat sink which is the PV pane…
Turismo inbound e ricettività in Sicilia: un’analisi della distribuzione spaziale
2010
In the last few years a significant increase in tourist accommodation has taken place in Sicily, both in hotels and in other hospitality. The increased number of accommodation beds has been encouraged by a multilevel policy of investments – both regional and European – aimed at filling the qualitative and quantitative gap penalizing Sicily in the field of tourism and accommodation competition. In some way, it may seem that the purpose of improving the accommodation supply in our Island has been obtained: indeed, while in 2000, the year when the previous European planning started, the number of accommodation beds in hotels was, in Sicily, of 4,2% of the national amount, in 2008 the Island ra…

Complementary approaches for assessing protein sources in fish feed
2018
Fluctuating fishmeal (FM) prices and declining marine fish stocks have led to the current trend of replacing dietary FM with plant proteins (PP) in fish feed. PPs offer challenges both with respect to nutritional quality and the occurrence of antinutrients. The assessment of utilisation efficiency of PPs for growth is important for the sustainable production of fish feed. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the applicability of stable isotope analysis in combination with respirometry in the evaluation of dietary PPs for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The dietary PPs were corn gluten meal (CGM), rapeseed protein concentrate (RPC) and potato protein (PoP). Complet…
DISCOVERING SOCIAL MEDIA BEHAVIOR PATTERNS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE MARKETING STRATEGY IN THE CURRENT CHAOTIC ENVIRONMENT
2012
Marketing used to imply paying for your target audience's attention. Nowadays, with the development of inbound marketing, marketers have to attract customers with valuable and useful information that will make them eager to buy. The ever-evolving technology has lead to an intense focus on inbound marketing, in its many forms, in order to lower marketing costs and gain a position in the social web. In this context, this paper explores how companies can benefit from social media marketing by understanding how much of their time customers spend on social media, and which platforms do they find the most engaging.
