Lay definitions of happiness across nations: The primacy of inner harmony and relational connectedness
2016
In well-being research the term happiness is often used as synonymous with life satisfaction. However, little is known about lay people's understanding of happiness. Building on the available literature, this study explored lay definitions of happiness across nations and cultural dimensions, analyzing their components and relationship with participants' demographic features. Participants were 2799 adults (age range = 30-60, 50% women) living in urban areas of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and United States. They completed the Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness Investigation (EHHI), reporting, among other information, th…
Neuromagnetic studies of attention in children and youth: Role of exercise and impact on cognitive competence
2023
Tarkkaavuus on monella tavoin yhteydessä elimistömme sisäisiin ja ulkoisiin tekijöihin aivojen kehityksen aikana, jolloin aivot muovautuvat voimakkaasti. Tässä väitöskirjassa tutkitaan tarkkaavuutta kahdesta eri näkökulmasta: millä tavoin oma toimintamme vaikuttaa tarkkaavuuteen ja toisaalta miten tarkkaavuus moduloi muita kognitiivisia toimintoja. Tarkemmin sanottuna väitöskirjassa tutkitaan fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja aerobisen kunnon yhteyksiä ennakoivan tarkkaavuuden ja modaliteettien välisen tarkkaavuuden suuntaamisen aivoperustaan 13-17-vuotiailla nuorilla. Lisäksi väitöskirjassa tutkitaan millä tavoin tarkkaavuus vaikuttaa puheäänteiden ja ei-kielellisten äänteiden käsittelyyn aivoissa…
Sustainable agriculture: Recognizing the potential of conflict as a positive driver for transformative change
2020
International audience; Transformative changes in agriculture at multiple scales are needed to ensure sustainability, i.e. achieving food security while fostering social justice and environmental integrity. These transformations go beyond technological fixes and require fundamental changes in cognitive, relational, structural and functional aspects of agricultural systems. However, research on agricultural transformations fails to engage deeply with underlying social aspects such as differing perceptions of sustainability, uncertainties and ambiguities, politics of knowledge, power imbalances and deficits in democracy. In this paper, we suggest that conflict is one manifestation of such und…
"Co-development of a decision support model for integrated weed management. Metamodelling and sensitivity analysis of a complex mechanistic model (FL…
2018
In order to reduce our use ofherbicides, we need a tool to design weedmanagement strategies relying on fewerherbicides. Weed management is complicatedand, together with necessity of schedulingoperations at long-term and the multiplicity ofcropping system impacts, it explains whymodels are so useful for designing innovativecropping systems. The aim of this thesis is todevelop a decision support system, intended forcrop advisors, reconciling crop protection andecosystem services Our approach consisted inidentifying the structure of the DSS ininteraction with future users while using anexisting research model, FLORSYS, for thebiophysical content of the tool. FLORSYS is a“virtual field” simulat…
Conceptions of teachership in the professional identity construction of adult educator graduates
2019
The aim of this study was to investigate the conceptions of teachership among graduates (n = 126) from a Finnish higher education study programme called Pedagogical Studies for Adult Educators. The conceptions of teachership comprise notions of teaching and of oneself as a teacher. Accordingly, the conceptions of teachership are viewed as one element in the process of constructing teacher identity. Currently, we have little knowledge about the professional identity construction of adult educators, even though there is a growing need for adult pedagogics in the changing professional life. Based on a qualitative thematic analysis of open-ended questionnaire data, three main conceptual categor…
The emergence of intangible capital : human, social, and intellectual capital in nineteenth century British, French, and German economic thought
2016
Since the late 1950s the concept of human capital, understood as the stock of knowledge, skills, and abilities that determine individual productivity, has become one of the central tools with which economists explain both individual success and economic growth. During the latter half of the 20th century complementing concepts such as social capital, meaning the value of social networks and norms of reciprocity, and intangible capital, meaning the investments in knowledge and innovation generation, have emerged. The term intellectual capital is sometimes used as a major concept to bind different forms of intangible capital. This study focuses on the conceptual equivalents of these ideas in 1…
Tēlu koncepti N. Gumiļova albumu lirikā.
2017
Temperamentally inhibited children are at risk for poorer maths performance : self-concept as mediator
2020
AbstractIt has repeatedly been found that temperamental inhibition and low academic achievement are associated with each other: children with cautious and wary or shy behaviour are at risk for low academic achievement. Several suggestions about the mechanism behind this association have been made, these highlighting for example, the fewer learning opportunities of cautious and wary children and more negative interaction between teachers and inhibited children. However, the empirical studies about these mechanisms are rare and, thus, they have remained unclear. This study examined whether children’s maths-related self-concept of ability acts as a mediator between their temperamental inhibiti…

EEG Resting-State Functional Networks in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.
2022
Background. Alzheimer’s cognitive-behavioral syndrome is the result of impaired connectivity between nerve cells, due to misfolded proteins, which accumulate and disrupt specific brain networks. Electroencephalography, because of its excellent temporal resolution, is an optimal approach for assessing the communication between functionally related brain regions. O bjective. To detect and compare EEG resting-state networks (RSNs) in patients with amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and healthy elderly (HE). Methods. We recruited 125 aMCI patients and 70 healthy elderly subjects. One hundred and twenty seconds of artifact-free EEG data were selected and compared between patients with aM…
