Relationship between maternal transfer of immunity and mother fecundity in an insect.

2012

Trans-generational immune priming (TGIP) corresponds to the plastic adjustment of offspring immunity as a result of maternal immune experience. TGIP is expected to improve mother's fitness by improving offspring individual performance in an environment where parasitism becomes more prevalent. However, it was recently demonstrated that maternal transfer of immunity to the offspring is costly for immune-challenged female insects. Thus, these females might not provide immune protection to all their offspring because of the inherent cost of other fitness-related traits. Females are therefore expected to adjust their investment to individual offspring immune protection in ways that maximize the…

Larval personality does not predict adult personality in a holometabolous insect.

2017

10 pages; International audience; Although personality (consistent inter-individual differences in behavioural traits across time and/or contexts) and behavioural syndromes (suites of correlated personality traits) have been widely studied in the last decades, the origin and development of these traits during ontogeny are still underexplored. In this context, species undergoing metamorphosis are of special interest. To date, however, the persistence of personality traits has been only little investigated in organisms undergoing complete metamorphosis such as in holometabolous insects, although this kind of studies may provide important insights from a functional point of view. Here, we test…

Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy)

2016

Abstract Di Gristina, E., G. Gottschlich & F.M. Raimondo (2016). Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy). Candollea 71: 7–12. In English, English abstract. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2016v711a2 Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily, Italy), is described and illustrated. It is morphologically close to Pilosella hoppeana subsp. macrantha (Ten.) S. Braut. & Greuter, but the two subspecies can be distinguished by the indument on the bracts. Its morphology, distribution, ecology, taxonomic relat…

Ischaliidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) in the Collection of the Natural History Museum, London

2019

Ischaliidae (Tenebrionoidea) is a small, relatively poorly known family of beetles, with fewer than 50 described species. The Coleoptera collections of the Natural History Museum, London are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world, but the Ischaliidae holding is relatively small (136 specimens, 18 species). However, this collection is of great historical and taxonomic importance, since 12 of the 18 species present are represented by name-bearing types, and five are still only known from the type material and have never been re-collected. We here provide an overview of the collection, and describe and illustrate an additional four species new to science, from Japan, I. (s. str.…

Records and Distribution Corrections on Palaearctic Tenebrionoidea (Coleoptera)

2020

Records and faunistic information are provided for 96 Palaearctic species of tenebrionoid beetles of the families Aderidae, Anthicidae, Melandryidae, Mordellidae, Mycetophagidae, Oedemeridae, Prostomidae, Pyrochroidae, Tenebrionidae and Tetratomidae. The first records of Agnathus decoratus Germar, 1818, Cynaeus angustus (Le Conte, 1851), Mordella huetheri Ermisch, 1956 and Prostomis mandibularis (Fabricius, 1801) for the whole Baltic region of Europe are presented.

EFFECTIVENESS OF SPINOSAD AND MINERAL OIL BASED COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS ON OVIPOSITION AND EGG HATCHING OF GRAPHOLITA FUNEBRANA TREITSCHKE

2018

Laboratory trials were performed to evaluate the action of spinosad and mineral oil on eggs of Grapholita funebrana Treitschke, the key pest in plum orchards. Fruits of cultivars Angeleno, President and Stanley were used in the trials. The first set of tests was carried out by introducing two mated females of G. funebrana into a cage together with fruits of a single cultivar. The second set of trials tested the three cultivars simultaneously. In all trials, one third of the fruits of each cultivar was treated with mineral oil, another third with spinosad and the final third was left untreated. Treatments were carried out before introducing mated females into the cages. The number of fruits …

Relationships among Abies nebrodensis, A. alba and A. cephalonica in the morphological and anatomical needle characteristics

2017

AbstractWe used 39 morphological and anatomical needle traits in the biometric comparisons Abies nebrodensis with A. alba and A. cephalonica. The multivariate analyses were utilised and a closer relationship of A. nebrodensis to A. cephalonica than to A. alba was detected, in contrast to what has been shown for cone characteristics.

Exploratory behaviour is not related to associative learning ability in the carabid beetle Nebria brevicollis.

2020

Abstract Recently, it has been hypothesised that as learning performance and animal personality vary along a common axis of fast and slow types, natural selection may act on both in parallel leading to a correlation between learning and personality traits. We examined the relationship between risk-taking, exploratory behaviour and associative learning ability in carabid beetle Nebria brevicollis females by quantifying the number of trials individuals required to reach criterion during an associative learning task (‘learning performance’). The associative learning task required the females to associate odour and direction with refugia from light and heat in a T-maze. Further, we assessed lea…

The Antioxidant Therapy: New Insights in the Treatment of Hypertension

2018

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) play a key role in the regulation of the physiological and pathological signaling within the vasculature. In physiological conditions, a delicate balance between oxidants and antioxidants protects cells from the detrimental effects of ROS/RNS. Indeed, the imbalance between ROS/RNS production and antioxidant defense mechanisms leads to oxidative and nitrosative stress within the cell. These processes promote the vascular damage observed in chronic conditions, such as hypertension. The strong implication of ROS/RNS in the etiology of hypertension suggest that antioxidants could be effective in the treatment of this pathology. I…
