Circulating irisin detection: Does it really work?
2015
The recent discovery of irisin has generated considerable interest in the scientific community. However, many studies on the biochemistry and biology of this intriguing hormone yielded controversial results in humans, which were mostly attributable to a number of drawbacks in the methods used for its detection and measurement.
Ramadan Observance during Pregnancy in Germany: a Challenge for Prenatal Care.
2018
Abstract Introduction Fasting during Ramadan while pregnant has been shown to have long-term negative effects on the offspringʼs physical and cognitive health. Even though most Muslims do not believe pregnant women are obligated to fast during Ramadan, fasting rates of up to 87% have been reported for pregnant women. No data exists to date about Ramadan adherence and behavior in Germany. Methods The Mainz Study of Ramadan and Pregnancy surveyed pregnant Muslims and new Muslim mothers in Mainz between October 2016 and January 2017 and collected information on Ramadan adherence and behavior. We also collected data on personal characteristics and opinions, to identify determinants of fasting u…
Fertility After Ovarian Cystectomy: How Does Surgery Affect IVF/ICSI Outcomes?
2019
Abstract Introduction For patients considering undergoing assisted reproductive techniques (ART), many concerns arise when persistent ovarian cysts are found. This large study aimed to determine how ovarian cyst removal affects success rates of IVF/ICSI therapies. Methods 550 patients who underwent an IVF/ICSI treatment between 2002 and 2011 with a persistent ovarian cyst ≤ 5 cm before treatment were analyzed retrospectively. 328 patientsʼ preference was to undergo a laparoscopic cystectomy and 222 patients opted for a conservative management. Control subjects included 13 552 patients undergoing IVF/ICSI at the same period of time without an ovarian cyst. Results After adjusting for age, pa…
Antiphosphatidylserine Antibodies Affect Rat Yolk Sacs in Culture: a Mechanism for Fetal Loss in Antiphospholipid Syndrome
2004
PROBLEM: A variety of reproductive impairments have been reported in the context of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). APS is associated with the presence of antibodies to negatively charged phospholipids that may affect the outcome of pregnancy. METHOD OF STUDY: Rat embryos were cultured within their yolk sacs. The effects of two antiphosphatidylserine monoclonal aPS antibodies (HL5B, RR7F) regarding their influence on growth and apoptotic events of the yolk sacs, as well as on growth and the morphology of the embryos, were studied. RESULTS: Exposure of rat embryos and their yolk sacs to aPS inhibited yolk sac growth. Moreover, increased number of apoptotic events of giant cells in the a…
Evolving European guidance on the medical management of neovascular age related macular degeneration
2006
BACKGROUND: Until recently, only two options were available for the treatment of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) associated with age related macular degeneration (AMD)-thermal laser photocoagulation and photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (PDT-V). However, new treatments for CNV are in development, and data from phase III clinical trials of some of these pharmacological interventions are now available. In light of these new data, expert guidance is required to enable retina specialists with expertise in the management of AMD to select and use the most appropriate therapies for the treatment of neovascular AMD. METHODS: Consensus from a round table of European retina specialists was obt…
Coronary CT angiography: a guide to examination, interpretation, and clinical indications
2021
Introduction: The introduction of Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) has changed the paradigm in the field of diagnostic cardiovascular medicine. CCT is the primary tool in the assessment of suspected Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and should be followed by functional assessment when needed to stratify disease and to plan potential interventional or surgical therapy. Areas Covered: We provided the current state of the knowledge on the main aspects of technique of examination, image interpretation and clinical indications. We have focused our attention on the basic routine applications and activities. Expert Opinion: The primary role of CCT in suspected CAD will progressively become the standa…
Preliminary study on the existence of ocular injuries after bullfighting or fire bull
2019
The vision of the bull is the cornerstone of the celebration in which it is the protagonist, both when it is fought and when it is “embolado” in popular festivities. An alteration of the vision could suppose an excessive danger for the animal and for the one that faces him. The bullfight and the “toro embolado” are traditions that present controversy between certain groups of people, for that reason, the present study aims to determine if there are ocular injuries in the bulls after both activities. For this work we use a total of 50 eyes, 40 from 20 fighting bull and 10 from 5 “toros embolados”. After the macroscopic and microscopic study carried out with fluorescein tests, ultrasounds, di…
Effects of Superficial Keratectomy in Peripheral Hypertrophic Subepithelial Corneal Opacification on Front and Back Corneal Astigmatism
2020
To evaluate changes of anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism after superficial keratectomy in peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification (PHSCO). Patients with PHSCO, who had ...
Sentinel Lymph Node Analysis in Colorectal Cancer Patients Using One-Step Nucleic Acid Amplification in Combination With Fluorescence and Indocyanine…
2018
Purpose: Analysis of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients was proposed for more accurate staging and tailored lymphadenectomy. The aim of this study was to assess the ability to predict lymph node (LN) involvement through analysis of the SLN with a one-step nucleic acid (OSNA) technique in combination with peritumoral injection of indocyanine green (ICG) and near-infrared (NIR) lymphangiography in CRC patients. Methods: A total of 34 patients were enrolled. Overall, 51 LNs were analyzed with OSNA. LNs of 17 patients (50%) were examined simultaneously with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and OSNA. Results: SLN analysis of 17 patients examined with H&E and OSN…
Differentiation of frontal fibrosing alopecia and Lichen planopilaris on trichoscopy: A comprehensive review.
2021
Trichoscopy in dermatology has opened up the new concept in overcoming the optical challenge faced clinically. It reveals the diagnostic details to the depth of superficial dermis, and thereby increasing the clinician's diagnostic accuracy and the level of confidence. The importance of trichoscopy in cicatricial alopecia is very evident in the current scenario for its precise diagnosis. The clinical picture in delineating lichen planopilaris (LPP) and frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) from each other and also from other close mimickers such as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, female patterned hair loss, and other cicatricial alopecia is bewildered due to its varied presentation and co…
