Maternal DNA lineages at the gate of Europe in the 10th century AD

2018

Given the paucity of archaeogenetic data available for medieval European populations in comparison to other historical periods, the genetic landscape of this age appears as a puzzle of dispersed, small, known pieces. In particular, Southeastern Europe has been scarcely investigated to date. In this paper, we report the study of mitochondrial DNA in 10th century AD human samples from Capidava necropolis, located in Dobruja (Southeastern Romania, Southeastern Europe). This geographical region is particularly interesting because of the extensive population flux following diverse migration routes, and the complex interactions between distinct population groups during the medieval period. We suc…

I cinque crateri

2015

The new archaeological research conducted by University of Alicante in the Eastern necropolis of Baelo Claudia (Tarifa, Cádiz) are presented in this paper. Drawing on renewed reinterpretations of ancient excavations which have been enriched with the results…

2020

The Obernai ’Neuen Brunnen’ necropolis in Lower Alsace yielded 29 tombs attributed to the Middle Neolithic. It was probably founded during the Early Grossgartach, at the end of the 48th century BC, and abandoned during the Roessen, perhaps during the Early Roessen, and in any case before the middle of the 46th century BC. The most original feature of this mortuary assemblage is that most of the tombs belong to the Planig-Friedberg period (the last stylistic phase of the Grossgartach) and the Roessen. The mortuary practices of these periods are still poorly known in the region. The necropolis is composed of three spatial groups, the most ancient of which contains all the Grossgartach tombs a…

2020

A necropolis at Baudemont (Saône-et-Loire) that was partially excavated in 1894 has revealed approximately fifteen graves datable to the end of the 4th and 5th centuries ad. Others seem to have been emptied during the first half of the 19th century. The discovery of a negative of the objects collected in 1894 indicates the pieces originating in the danubian area, which probably reflects the presence of a group of eastern Germans among those buried in the necropolis. These discoveries offer new perspectives on the Gallic context during the 5th century.

Baucina-Monte Falcone 2014, indagini nella necropoli.

2016

The aim of this report is to present the results of archaeological samples, executed in order to contrast illegal researches on a necropolis at Baucina, in the northwestern part of Sicily, where Punic, Greek and indigenous traditions coexisted, in a relationship which is the focus of our ongoing investigation. We collected an archeological dataset, whose interpretation is detecting an articulated situation where the interaction between three different ethnic groups gave as result the variety of rituals. The future excavations of the site could increase the perception of this interaction, for a period in which Greeks and Punics designed their spheres of influence of the territories within th…
