Bookshelves create a cozy atmosphere : Affective and emotional materiality in bookreading practices
2022
A bookshelf full of printed books is an assembly of objects, which can create affective reactions and a sense of atmosphere. Yet the atmosphere is not experienced in the same way by everyone. For many readers it can be very positive, inviting, or cozy. This chapter explores why the materiality and presence of books and bookshelves can make a positive impact, and what kinds of elements the idea of a bookish or a cozy atmosphere may contain. The analysis is based on written narratives, in which Finnish people describe their reading habits in different stages of their lives. The concept of atmosphere will be analyzed in its cultural sense. peerReviewed
The development of a short measure of physical function for knee OA KOOS-Physical Function Shortform (KOOS-PS) – an OARSI/OMERACT initiative
2008
Udgivelsesdato: maj OBJECTIVE: To develop a short measure of physical function for knee osteoarthritis (OA) using multi-national data from individuals with varying degrees of severity of knee OA. METHODS: Rasch analysis, based on the partial credit model, was conducted on Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and Western Ontario McMaster Universities' Osteoarthritis Index data from individuals with knee OA, ranging from community to pre-total knee replacement samples from five countries. Fit of the data to the Rasch model was evaluated by overall model fit and item-level fit statistics (chi(2), size of residual, F-test). Invariance across age, gender and country was evaluated. Unidim…
Directly Observed Physical Activity and Fundamental Motor Skills in Four-Year-Old Children in Day Care
2016
Physical activity (PA), its location, social interactions and fundamental motor skills (FMS) were investigated in four-year-old Finnish children in day care. Six skills in the stability, locomotor and manipulative domains were assessed in 53 children (24 boys, 29 girls, normal anthropometry) with the APM-Inventory manual for assessing children’s perceptual and FMS and Total Motor Scores (TMS; 0–6 points) calculated. PA intensity, location, group composition and activity type − sitting, squatting, kneeling − were directly observed with a modified version of the Observational System for Recording Physical Activity in Children – Preschool Version (OSRAC – P) during three consecutive days in 14…

Elämäni esineet
2023
Oletko pitänyt tallessa lapsuutesi unilelun? Onko sinulla jokin perintöesine, johon liittyy sukutarina? Kuuluuko jokin tietty esine erottamattomasti juuri sinun kotiisi? Millaiset esineet luovat kodikkuutta? Millaiset raivostuttavat, turhauttavat tai ovat turhia? Omistatko esineitä, joista et haluaisi luopua koskaan? nonPeerReviewed
Posterior stability in posterior-stabilized vs medially congruent total knee replacement: A radiological comparison of two polyethylene designs in a …
2020
Objective:The purpose of this radiological study was to assess the posterior laxity of a single model of a total knee arthroplasty design (TKA) having a medially constrained (MC) or a Posterior-Stabilized (PS) polyethylene insert using a well-documented stress x-ray. To the authors knowledge, this is the first report evaluating MC TKA outcomes according to the “kneeling view.”Materials and Methods:Sixty patients with non-traumatic primary knee osteoarthritis undergoing TKA were first matched by age, sex, BMI and diagnosis and then divided in two groups: group A (37 knees) received a MC TKA and group B (23 knees) a PS implant made by the same manufacturer. In all cases the posterior cruciate…
Remembering and Forgetting, Discovering and Cherishing : Engagements with material culture of war in Finnish Lapland
2018
The Second World War left considerable material remains in Finnish Lapland, ranging from remnants of structures destroyed in the 1944–45 Lapland War, through to small artefacts connected to soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians. These material remains have variously been saved and cherished by survivors and their families, forgotten or disregarded as ‘war junk’, ‘discovered’ by hobbyists, amassed and exchanged by private collectors, and/or accessioned into official museum collections. These various processes represent engagements with material culture of war that take on various meanings and embodiments, depending on the different individuals and organizations involved. We have conducted …

Effects of non-tracking solar collector orientation on energy production : photovoltaic systems
2012
Abstract: This Master's thesis proposes a new method for calculating the optimum tilt and orientation angle of a fitted solar collector. In addition to using geographical data, this method takes into account the radiation data and weather statistics of prospective locations. This makes the calculations valid not only for certain latitudes, but also for certain radiation and weather conditions. Calculations were done by estimating the energy production of a given solar array using a sequence of different tilt angles and orientation angles. Special attention was given to shaded solar arrays and arrays made up of photovoltaic modules. Specific radiation and weather data was used for both locat…
